Pffft! I wish! I've been sitting on shares of dhkendall for three months now and still can't find a buyer. Your little stunt upthread didn't help matters either.dhkendall wrote:Thank you, Victor Borge.gnash wrote:("I am one, too." sounds stupid. It just calls for a retort "I am three, four.")
And everyone else. Still sounds "off" to me, but at least I know that's my fault, I love this place - I get to pick the brains of people who can buy and sell me intellectually.

People get used to "couldn't've," "wouldn't've," and "shouldn't've" to the point where their instinct is to put a redundant "'ve" between the one other common "-dn't" and the past participle.
"I wish he hadn't've done that."
"So, what do you wish he had have done?"
What bugs me is people saying 'would/wouldn't have done such and such', when 'hadn't' is correct.Vanya wrote:seaborgium wrote:"Hadn't've."

Hadn't of. At least get it right. Sheesh.
um, Dallas Cowboys, New York Jets...Maybe I'm more out of touch than I thought, but I did believe both play football in the NFL. OK, not especially well, but that's for another thread.bpmod wrote:But that's an entirely different sport. If you're not going to stay in the same league, at least stay in the same sport.John Boy wrote:You're all missing the central point. It should read, "Think you're a Jets fan? dhkendall lives in Winnipeg. When the publication in question referred to "Jets fans" it was probably referring to the NHL team by that name (the former Atlanta Thrashers).John Boy wrote:um, Dallas Cowboys, New York Jets...Maybe I'm more out of touch than I thought, but I did believe both play football in the NFL. I meant what you (and Rex) found wrong with the Jets fans example.bpmod wrote:I am really confused now. My peeve was about the misuse of the word 'myself'.gnash wrote:As for bpmod's peeve, about number: just think about the situation in reverse:

So what's the problem? This is clearly an example of the pluperfect perfect, a nuanced tense referring to a past time when the consequences of an action prior to that time become evident.seaborgium wrote:"Hadn't've."

I don't know any 'major league( as in professional) teams with that combination of nicknames. The 'Minutemen' are University of Massachusetts, 'Green Wave' = Tulane. There are several possibilities for 'Wildcats'(Kentucky? Arizona? Kansas State? Villanova?), while 'Spartans' could be Michigan State(most likely) or San Jose State.Paucle wrote:Asked this a long time ago at Ken's site, but this thread reminds me of it.
A couple has a goal: over the course of their relationship, see every major league team play, live. As a former sportswriter, he has lots of ticket contacts in various stadiums.
One day she calls out to him, "Hey, I've found a couple more games that fit our schedule, on our Labor Day weekend and those 4 days we take at Thanksgiving. We can knock off four more teams."
"What've you got? I'll check my contacts." She calls out the 2 contests - just the team names, not their locales (e.g., "Wildcats at Spartans, Minutemen hosting Green Wave.") He reaches for his cell to start making calls, and realizes... he has no idea who to call!
What 2 games did she mention? (As near as I can tell, there's only one 4-team combo that fits all the aspects of the puzzle.)
It turns out that it's hard to dance-fight in hockey skates.sarah0114 wrote:Does anything special happen when Winnipeg and San Jose play each other? Are they mortal enemies?
