Alex: We have things that don't quite seem to go together. Loni Geerlings, when you were growing up, you had three heroes. Who were they?
Loni: Mr. T, Arthur Fonzarelli, and, you, sir.
[ laughter ]
Alex: Well, how did I get into that group?
Loni: I watched "Classic Concentration" during the day when I was little.
Alex: Oh, good for you.
[ chuckles ]
Alex: Neal Pollack, our other challenger, is a writer from Austin, Texas. He is a certified yoga instructor, and also an announcer for...
Neal: The roller derby in Austin, Texas.
Alex: Those two things don't seem to go together, either.
Neal: They don't.
Alex: And how did you get involved in the roller girls? I didn't know they still had those.
Neal: Yeah, roller derby came back about 10 years ago in Austin, and how I got involved with it --I answered an ad on Facebook. They were holding auditions. I'd always wanted to be a sports announcer. I got to the venue. There were about 25 people trying out, and half of them were either incompetent or insane, and so I nudged my way in.
Alex: Uh, in which half d--? Well, I --no.
[ laughter ]
Alex: Matt Volk is our champion. He's a financial analyst from Cedar Rapids, Iowa. And on your honeymoon, something exciting happened, and I'm not talking about you and your wife. What was it?
Matt: We took a trip to the zoo, and we got to play with a, like, 5- or 6-week-old baby tiger.
Alex: Wow. Now, I didn't realize that the zoo attendants would allow people to do that. What was it like?
Matt: Uh, it was kind of like your normal house cat
Alex: --except bigger, stronger...
Matt: Very small, yeah.
Alex: ...and scarier.
Matt: When they grow up. That's for sure.

Matt: $12,800
Loni: $12,000
FINAL JEOPARDY! CATEGORY
NEWSPAPERS
VENUSIAN MONOLOGUES/MARTIAN CHRONICLES
Four-fifths for first place. Stratton's Dilemma.
Neal: Wager $11,601 to cover Matt.
Matt: You ought to wager to cover Loni, but since you cannot win on a Triple Stumper if you do so, you ought to choose between wagering $0 or maximizing your winnings with a bet of all $12,800. You are in Stratton's Dilemma, calling for a wager of more than $11,200 (to shut out Loni) or less than $10,400 (risking the possibility of being passed from behind by Loni). Go with the smaller bet if you believe a Triple Stumper is more likely than a singleton miss by Neal.
Loni: You ought to try wagering between $801 and $9,600. This will top a $0 wager by Matt while still beating Neal and Matt on the Triple Stumper (should Neal wager to cover Matt's doubled score and Matt wager to cover your doubled score).
FINAL JEOPARDY! CLUE
On July 23, 2013 this bestselling British tabloid re-spelled its name on its masthead to honor big British news

Neal: $14,000 + $12,000 = $26,000 (What is the Sun?) (New champion: $26,000)
(Alex: They changed the masthead to Son because William and Kate gave birth to a son.)
Total Potential Lach Trash: $8,400

MISCELLANEOUS INTERESTING CLUES
CNN ENVIRONMENT $200: (Sumnima Udas of CNN gives the clue from a boat in a river.) The pollution level of Delhi's Yamuna River more than doubled from 1993 to 2005; among the main culprits are these chemicals from the abundant agricultural land upriver
CNN ENVIRONMENT $400: (Anna Coren of CNN gives the clue from a hazy Beijing.) Beijing's air pollution has been somewhat improved thanks to more modern cars in the city, where a study has found a near doubling in ration of carbon dioxide to this toxic product of inefficient combustion
CNN ENVIRONMENT $800: (Ivan Watson of CNN gives the clue from Istanbul.) Overfishing & industrial phosphates from the Danube are 2 of the problems facing this sea; as the location of its only outflow Istanbul houses the headquarters of the commission to protect it against pollution
CNN ENVIRONMENT $1000: (Jim Bitterman of CNN gives the clue from Paris.) Here in Paris, technicians are drilling miles beneath the Earth's crust searching for hot water, which can be converted to this kind of energy to cleanly heat hundreds of homes
OH, "G"! $1000: Have a heart, and name this worldly vegetable seen here
(Neal: What is artichoke?) [immediately realizes his error]
MOVIE VILLAINS $1200: Dr. Evil said this character "fits easily into most overhead storage bins"
[Matt responds in character as Dr. Evil; audience laughs]

All three players performed well today, and it was interesting to see a final score in exact increments of $1,000 ($24,000 to $25,000 to $26,000). Had Matt Volk won today we would already have, in theory, a full field for the next Tournament of Champions.

Two timid DD bets and then she goes all in on FJ from third place in a close game?
no chance on FJ. Not up on my British tabloids. Had Globe, which seemed logical as it begins and ends with the same letters as the new prince's name.

Geostationary was pretty tough for $400 IMO.
Instagram is an app? I thought it was just a photo website like Flickr or Photobucket. NHO Shazam, either. Then again, until a couple months ago, the cell phone I owned was 10 years old…
"Well, it can't be carbon monoxide, since carbon dioxide's in the clue… oh, damn it!" Again, quit doing that J! writers! I hate tl;dr clues, and the readers' voices were pretty hard to decipher even with the words right below them.
Another Nirvana clue already? I think I bargle nawdle zouss'd way too soon.
====
I got all the $400s in DJ!, which is rare for me.
3/5 in Movie Villiains, missing Loki and whatever $2000 was.
Also 3/5 in 4-Letter Cities. Picked Mesa instead of Yuma, and stupidly said Oahu. Which is an island, not a city. I'm such a derp.
"Angul doesn't mean a fishing pole, then what else could it be?!?" Oh, duh.
I got two in Heavenly Language by other means. "Firmament" I remembered from a Bill Cosby sketch, and the only place I've heard "on the side of angels" is from a LeAnn Rimes song.

British Tabloid = Sun. Recent British news = William & Kate's baby. Sun -> son, done.
Interesting synchronicity with yesterday's Wheel, where.

I had the Daily Mail. I honestly thought it was going to be correct! I started out trying to think of British tabloids, thought of the Daily Mail, and thought, "Aha! Mail = Male! That's gotta be it!"
But then when Loni's answer was revealed, I was like "Gah!" and knew that Sun must be right.

Re: Tuesday, September 24, 2013 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
They write down "what" or "who", but not "is" or "are". The player are told which "w" word to write down before the clue is revealed, in order to avoid a player losing due to forgetting their phrasing. This is why we occasionally see a response like "What Doubt?" or "What Tasmanian Devil?" (TM Joel Pool), since the "What" is there ahead of time, but the "is" isn't.ACW wrote:I knew it had to do with the baby; I went through tabloids in my head but got it in time.

I thought this was a bad board wasted on good contestants.

Re: Tuesday, September 24, 2013 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
Okay game on this end, seemed to start off slow and then really ramp up towards the end.
Sighed with pleasure when I saw a WW II board. Ah, my fave, and swept that bad boy, as well as most of Astronomy, another one of my loves.
FJ was an Instaget, what can I say.
Now deciding I'm getting used to the new set.

Re: Tuesday, September 24, 2013 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
That game got very exciting near the end, after Loni missed the final DD, all 3 players had scores that were multiples of $400 apart, so with a handful of clues remaining, there was a great chance of any 2 of the 3 players ending up tied, possibly all 3 ending up tied, and also the possibility of evenly spaced scores, which can lead to a tie game on a tough FJ clue.
I was disappointed in the actual finish, as Neal got enough clues to hold the lead, and the triple get FJ made the drama minimal and the wagers pretty meaningless. Had it been a triple stumper, Neal still would have won with $2,000, since Loni needlessly wagered everything, and Matt needed to wager most of his total in order to cover Loni.

I thought that this was a pretty good board, at least by the standards of the show. This was an excellent game all around, with three very good contestants. It looked like the guy who won struggled on the buzzer early on, but he probably did have the most impressive gets of the three.
I struggled once again, especially in the DJ round. Like TPH, I said Mesa for Yuma. I also thought that I would get my one Lach trash for the night there at the very end, but I had a brain fart and guessed "Kirkwood gap" for the Cassini division.
I had absolutely no idea on FJ. I knew that the clue was referring the royal birth but I didn't know the name of the newspaper.

I'm yet another person who blurted out "Mesa" for Yuma.
I would say that quite frequently, in a narrow category like "four-letter cities", it's not necessarily a bad idea to just blurt out the first one that fits a key element of the clue such as being in the right state. Unfortunately, it didn't work in this case.
Mesa is the largest four-letter city in Arizona. But Yuma is in the southwestern part of the state, which I think was more consistent with the rest of the clue if I recall correctly.

^ It was.
However, I still have no excuse for saying Oahu at $2000.

The two are not mutually exclusive.TenPoundHammer wrote:Also 3/5 in 4-Letter Cities. Picked Mesa instead of Yuma, and stupidly said Oahu. Which is an island, not a city. I'm such a derp.

I was in Yuma once & that might be the hottest place I've ever been to in the US. I wasn't crazy about the winner's theatrics at the end & I'll be rooting for anyone else tomorrow. The "Son" was easy only because it was heavily featured when that baby was born. Not a big fan of the royals but that crap is force fed, it seems.

I also had Mesa for the Arizona clue. Like everyone else, I knew it was about the royal baby, but did not know the name of the paper.
