TD 191: Miscellaneous III: Return of the Math and Lyrics

TD 191: Miscellaneous III: Return of the Math and Lyrics

Here's a quiz with a healthy variety of questions and answers. Enjoy!

Here are the rules:

1. Please send me your answers by private message, but NOT ANYWHERE IN THIS THREAD!

2. The deadline for submission is 5:00 p.m. central time Monday, May 19.

3. The object, as you know, is to provide the least popular correct answer for each of the questions.
a. Your score on a question equals the number of people (including you) who gave your answer.
b. Incorrect answers receive the "sheep" score (highest score on that question) times 2.
c. Lowest final score wins (with total computed by adding your scores together)

4. You may drop one question by listing DROP instead of an answer. Not surprisingly, the DROP option gives you a score of zero points for that question.

5. You may also pick the SHEEP option for one question. For that question, you will automatically get the sheep score (but the SHEEP option won't count towards how many people said the real sheep answer). Also, if SHEEP and/or DROP is the most popular answer, the SHEEP score will still be the real sheep (i.e. the most popular real answer, not SHEEP or DROP).

6. You may also attach HEDGE to one answer. Hedge does nothing for a right answer, but when attached to a wrong answer will reduce the penalty from double the sheep score to sheep plus one.

7. Answers must be provided out of the wealth of information that exists in your brain - no research! However, if you are lucky enough to stumble onto an answer between when you read the question and when you submit your answers, it is fully acceptable to use that.

8. The first tiebreaker will be the score before the bonus questions, then the number of singletons, then doubletons, then submission order.

9. If you have questions or comments, send them to me via private message unless you are sure that what you say will not reveal answers, offer hints, steer players away from negbait, or in any other way affect the outcome. If appropriate, I’ll post clarifications below the questions.

Good Luck!

(14 answers)

2. Name a sports star whose number seven has been retired by a MLB, NBA, NFL, or NHL team. (20 answers)

7. Name a U.S. Vice President who served multiple terms (or parts of). (12 answers)

8. Name a Fibonacci number between 4 and 4444. (15 answers)

For number 2, does it have to be exactly the number 7, or can it be any number that has a 7 in it (for example, 777)?

You need to define what a fermion is. Otherwise, it just makes no sense.

Those are strong statements. Why does he "need" to do so? Why does it make "no sense"?

It makes sense to anyone familiar with physics. Maybe a large percentage of the board isn't, and it would be helpful for the OP to define the term, but the question certainly makes sense as written and he doesn't "need" to do anything about it.

Can you quit being an irritable pedant? Its pretty disrespectful of you to talk for someone else.

I'm sure Jason can handle the question any way he likes.

Yes, he can...that was my point. Personally I think it's pretty disrespectful of you to talk for the whole board, claiming the question makes no sense just because it makes no sense to you.

I have no idea what a fermion is, but that is my fault, not that of the quizmaster. I also don't know what a Fibbonacci number is, but again I am to blame for that.

I had two semesters of college physics but don't know what it is. Am I allowed to ask my children, or is that cheating? :-)

Who says i'm speaking for the entire board? I just asked a question, which for some reason you took great umbrage to. Don't you have anything else to get angry about?

Yeah, if there's a way to explain a fermion without giving away any answers I would appreciate a clarification. I could ask my wife the AP physics teacher but her explanation would most likely give me an unfair advantage. :)

I don't think that would qualify as cheating as long as she doesn't point you toward the lesser known ones :)

I have a pretty good idea where the word fermion originated, but that doesn't help me much.

My goodness, these are some tough questions. :o I'll have to see if I can come up with enough answers.
