I recommend abstaining from alcohol entirely for the month before your taping. It gives you your full mental faculties when you play the game, and leaves some extra time for studying, if you so choose.
I'd just focus on the biggies: world capitals, U.S. presidents, British royalty, Shakespeare. And wagering.
Also, living on the east coast is a huge help for that early call for the bus.

I abstained from alcohol 12 hours before my taping.

Alcohol isn't usually what coaches ask players to abstain from before a big game ...

Thanks all for the great tips in this thread. I'm currently coaching someone who tapes in November, and my type competitive nature is coming on a little strong. I'll back off and work on the basics.

All depends on who you are. Before a taping I stayed out until 130am doing what I always did on a Monday night. I got a few hours and let adrenaline and competitive juices easily carry me through the day.
There's probably no right or wrong way to spend the night before so long as you're in town.

Some of the great tips seem problem causing to me, putting the last couple together says this.boson wrote:Thanks all for the great tips in this thread. Tell the person you are working with to stop drinking and to stop having sex right now, by the time they tape they probably won't remember a darn thing but when the adrenaline kicks in, they should be able to physically remove their competator from their podiums with just a small shove and they will not be able to buzz in.

Well, many Jeopardy! players have no problem "abstaining" from that.dhkendall wrote:Alcohol isn't usually what coaches ask players to abstain from before a big game ...
