Hilary Carney, a rehabilitation specialist from Bonita Springs, Florida (whose 1-day cash winnings total $6,400)

OPENING REMARKS
Alex: Thank you, Johnny. Thank you, ladies and gentlemen. Hi, folks. Hope you're all recovered now from that weekend of celebrating. Hilary, as you just heard, a modest champion with just $6,400. Could have been a big, big payday, but she didn't get the Final Jeopardy! on Friday, and that cost her 2/3 of her earnings up to that point. Shu-Ping and Jess, maybe you guys will bring better luck to our show today. Good luck! Here we go. Now the categories, starting off with...

SCORES AT THE FIRST BREAK
Jess: $4,000
Hilary: $2,600

CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS

Alex: When her friends knew that Jess Lindoerfer was going to be a contestant on the program, some of them gave you some advice.

Jess: Yes. My partner, Nate, is a teacher, and one of his students suggested that, uh, if it's the end of the game, and you know you're going to lose, you should just do something totally crazy, and then maybe someone will give you your own reality show.

Alex: Good advice. Good advice.

[Laughter]

Alex: However, you're in the lead right now with $4,000.

Alex: Shu-Ping Shen is an attorney from New York. This man is obsessed with food.

Shu-Ping: Yes.

Alex: And you will go to different restaurants, different countries, different places?

Shu-Ping: Indeed. Um, I will travel for food. Uh, last year, I happened to be living in London, and a friend of mine happened to nab a reservation at a very well-known restaurant in Denmark, uh, and so I definitely took that opportunity to fly out two weekends later just to go to that.

Alex: Just to go to the restaurant?

Shu-Ping: Just to go to the restaurant.

Alex: And was it worth it?

Shu-Ping: It was amazing.

Alex: What was great about it?

Shu-Ping: Um, I got to eat ants for the first time.

Alex: Ants.

Shu-Ping: Yes. It was fascinating.

Alex: You're willing to cross the English Channel for ants.

Shu-Ping: Indeed. Indeed.

Alex: You are a sick, sick person.

[Laughter]

Alex: Hilary Carney is our champion, ladies and gentlemen. She is not only a big fan of game shows, quiz shows, but also soap operas.

Hilary: Yeah.

Alex: Which one in particular?

Hilary: This one's The Young and the Restless. I grew up on that. I've probably been watching it for 25 years.

Alex: Now, soap operas have--

Hilary: Yeah.

Alex: --a lot of the popular ones have gone by the wayside in the last few years.

Hilary: Mm-hm. Right

Alex: You're hoping that's not going to happen to yours.

Hilary: No.

Alex: Okay.

Hilary: There's always something good on that.

Alex: Always something good on it.

Hilary: There's always somethin'--always somethin'-somethin'! [Laughs]

Alex: Yeah, always some new tragedy to deal with.

Hilary: Yep.

Alex: All right. Right now, we're dealing with something good.

TRIPLE STUMPERS IN THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
LET'S VISIT SCOTLAND $600: Edinburgh lies on the southern shore of this arm of the North Sea

SUPERATHLETES $400: In 2014 this Dodger became the first pitcher since 1968 to be MVP of the National League
(Alex: And that is our star here for the Dodgers, [*].)

Shu-Ping: $11,400

FINAL JEOPARDY! CATEGORY
THE OSCARS

VENUSIAN MONOLOGUES/MARTIAN CHRONICLES
Four-fifths for first place.
Hilary: Wager $13,001 to cover Jess.
Jess: You're faced with a legitimate choice in strategy. You can either choose to cover Shu-Ping, hoping that you give the correct response and Hilary doesn't, in which case you'll want to wager $7,401 to cover Shu-Ping's doubled score, but no more than $10,600 if you want to top Hilary on a Triple Stumper; or bet up to $3,999 and win if both Hilary and Shu-Ping miss Final.
Shu-Ping: If you think Jess is going to wager to cover you, try wagering less than $3,400 to beat Hilary and Jess on the Triple Stumper; or, if you think Jess is going to wager small in hopes of a Triple Stumper, wager between $4,001 (venusian, to top a $0 wager by Jess) and $11,400 (martian, which may win in some cases but may also risk dropping you from second to third place if you get Final wrong).

FINAL JEOPARDY! CLUE
"Gladiator" is close, but this film has the earliest historical setting of any Best Picture Oscar winner

FINAL SCORES
Shu-Ping: $11,400 + $1,601 = $13,001 (What is Ben-Hur?) (2nd place)
Jess: $15,400 + $2,401 = $17,801 (What is Ben-Hur) (New champion: $17,801)
Hilary: $17,800 - $12,400 = $5,400 (What is The Ten Commandments?) (3rd place)

The Lord of the Rings:The Return of the King is set during the third age, which predates the fourth age (the age of man) by thousands of years and so is technically the correct answer.

It's also set during a fictional historical period.

I'm still a bit tired from a long trip to a Weird Al concert. We all have cell phones, so come on, let's get real.

I knew shift = chemise from the second Watson game, and Diana Nyad and Pelé from previous FJ!s, but none would surface in time. As a result, I was 4/5 in Computer Keys.

Blanking on Herman Melville's name also left me 0/5 in Tasty Literature.

"Old Capulet"? I could've taken 400 guesses and never gotten that one right, even though "JuliET CapulET" has finally managed to stick in my head. The category as a whole seemed like it called for far deeper R&J knowledge than is usually required.

"Kambu Svayambhuva" still doesn't look or sound anything remotely like "Cambodia" to me.

NHO Gayle King or Lena Dunham, but at least recognized the next three clues' correct responses even if I went 0/5 in Friends. That category felt upside-down.

My only guess on FJ! was The Passion of the Christ. Oops.

Kambu -> Cambo(dia). Not really a stretch.

Humdrum, Rommel, and filibuster were very strange TSes. Giants and Kershaw, though? Knew they'd be stand-and-stares before he finished reading the clues.

Instaget FJ. Had a feeling at least one of them would say Ten Commandments. I'm just going to assume that at some point in her calculations, Hilary's math failed, but at which step? That's a very strange wager.

This was a well-played game, with all three contestants in five figures going into FJ. I had 41 correct responses including four triple stumpers: Firth of Forth, humdrum, Clayton Kershaw, and filibuster. Instaget FJ.

Good game.

I wonder, other than Pele, Beckham, Messi and C. Ronaldo, if any soccer player would ever be an answer on J!. Even Maradona seems like it'd be pushing it.

I said Spartacus for FJ.

It kinda sorta barely is if I squint at it after seeing it ten times, but at least to my eyes it's not super duper obvious.

I thought humdrum was a "Sheldon Cooper" clue that took a long time to filter through all the possible synonyms of "boring" and find which ones have an instrument in them. Filibuster also seemed like a wide-open clue.

Counting only clues where they want the name and not some other fact about them, the archive shows 0 hits for Messi, 1 for C. Ronaldo (TS), and 2 for Maradona, one of which was an International tourney, and the other spotted them "hand of God". So...yeah.

Any of these anywhere close to you? I wanted to do Mt. Pleasant, MI earlier in the year, but it sold out more than two months in advance. Traverse City was just about as far away (2 hours) and fit into my schedule. (However, I don't drive and it didn't fit into mom's. But the ticket was nonrefundable, so after saying "Why don't you just buy a concert DVD or something? Concerts are so expensive* and crowded**", she adjusted her schedule accordingly.)

* Apparently "more than $20" is too steep a concert price for her. I paid $50.
** Sure, go to one outdoor concert where literally everyone is just wandering around randomly, and you think all of them are like that, huh?

27 right.

Tasty (1), Know (0), Super (5), Key (1), Scot (1), "H" (1)
Romeo (4), Ear (1), Friend (3), Mist (4), Roman (4), Country (2)

Lach Trash: "New York Giants", "Clayton Kershaw"

I was torn between Ben-Hur and Spartacus. I was going to go with the latter, but I suddenly remembered it didn't win the Oscar in 1961 for 1960 movies (The Apartment did), so I went back to Ben-Hur. :)

Landon Donovan, Mia Hamm, and Brandi Chastain all have been. Some of the players from this year's USWNT wouldn't surprise me – Wambach, Morgan, Lloyd.
Oh, what has science wrought? I sought only to turn a man into a metal-encased juggernaut of destruction powered by the unknown properties of a mysterious living crystal. How could this have all gone wrong?

Friends was a total WGAS category.
Thought of Ben-Hur, went farther back to The Ten Commandments.
Got the filibuster & Firth of Forth TS.

One theory I come up with is that she predicted Jess would wager an even $10,000 and was counting on an incorrect response from her. But then she would have to deal with a tie-breaker and that's only if Shu-Ping bets at least $6,000 and gets it wrong also.

As faulty as Hilary's wager was, Jess' wager was less rational. Counting on the champ to wager zero when she could be passed by both 2nd and 3rd place was just poor strategy. JMO
If she protects herself from Shu-Ping doubling his score, she still finishes ahead of Hilary on a TS. The only thing positive about her actual wager was that it forced 1st and 3rd to get it correct to win.

Shu-Ping's wager suggested he read Jess' mind, and followed her wagering strategy.

Pretty sure Frankie Yankovic isn't related to Al. Certainly wasn't his father.
Not many people can say they've lost four times on Jeopardy!.
