I was sure of the other nine and 2011 could only get me down to Tripoli or Cairo until I saw "shores" and went the right way, after which "green" was another pointer in that direction (I recalled that prior to Qaddafi's overthrow, Libya was the only nation with a monochromatic flag). First 75-point day of the SHC for me!nlw44 wrote:Green square helped with Tripoli, but also the phrase "near the shores of this North African capital." As in "to the shores of Tripoli" in the Marine's Hymn. Thank you for that delicious little TOM.

The SHC team, when preparing this question, used Encyclopaedia Britannica as a source (https://www.britannica.com/place/Addis-Ababa), which in this article gives 1935 to 1941. We consider this to be sufficiently authoritative so as to deny the request for a RQ on this basis.Magna wrote:ETA: After looking this up, I'm requesting a replacement question. The question asks what city was the capital of Italian East Africa from 1935 to 1941. Addis Ababa only became the capital of the newly-established Italian East Africa in the middle of 1936. In 1935, it was still the capital of an independent Abyssinia/Ethiopia.

That's how I got it. I had Tunis down until I noticed "shores". I thought it might be some evil negbait, but I went for it anyway.nlw44 wrote:Green square helped with Tripoli, but also the phrase "near the shores of this North African capital." As in "to the shores of Tripoli" in the Marine's Hymn.
If I'd put Grant, I could have scored double digits. Maybe next year I'll do better than my first year...

I understand. But I do see that article links to this one, which says Italian East Africa came into being in mid 1936.OntarioQuizzer wrote:The SHC team, when preparing this question, used Encyclopaedia Britannica as a source (https://www.britannica.com/place/Addis-Ababa), which in this article gives 1935 to 1941. I feel a discussion as to whether Italian East Africa began when Mussolini started the invasion in October '35 or actually completed it the following year is fraught with geopolitical issues.
I stand by the original decision, based on the original source.

I say, no need for any RQ; just give credit to anyone who responded with the previous capital of Italian East Africa.econgator wrote:This is why I hate that RQ's exist.Magna wrote:ETA: After looking this up, I'm requesting a replacement question. In a related note, how old is this article?OntarioQuizzer wrote:The SHC team, when preparing this question, used Encyclopaedia Britannica as a source (https://www.britannica.com/place/Addis-Ababa), which in this article gives 1935 to 1941. Encyclopedia Britannica wrote:It comprised Ethiopia (annexed by Italy on May 9, 1936, and was proclaimed a part of Italian East Africa that June 1) together with the Italian colonies of Eritrea, now part of Ethiopia, and Italian Somaliland, now part of the Somali Democratic Republic.

No later than 1991, when both the Eritrean war for independence ended and the Communist government in Somalia collapsed.

No, Lebanon is not in Africa.

Boy, I saw Pokemon as a category title and was sure I was dead in the water. I was never going to get Niantic for the company name, but the rest of them were quite gettable for someone with reasonably good general knowledge and very shallow Pokemon smarts.

I think I should have spent a little more time thinking on the Hall game. My first thought was Go ends in "Go." No, it has to be something longer. Stratego! Think, McFly. I'm an idiot sometimes.

Re: 2016 Summer Hiatus Challenge - Round 5 Instant Replay Thread (SPOILERS)
My (parenthetical) reply of "taking selfies" was a bit too specific for the 2-pointer. But it does make one think of a variation of Pokemon Go, where the object is not to catch them or hit them with a ball, or whatever it is you do, but take a selfie with them (and post it someplace?) Maybe it could be called Pokemon Photobomb. Sounds like a money-maker to me! Someone should get on that.
DISCLAIMER: I do not, will not, play Pokemon Go. I'm not even sure I know anyone who does. I don't understand how it works, nor do I particularly care. But if it brings joy to people, good for them!

The loading screen of Pokemon Go is probably the source of an earworm for many Pixies fans.
There's a particular brand of crackers I sometimes eat. One of my favorite flavors is made with flax seeds. The other is Asiago cheese. So of course I completely failed to remember that such a thing exists. At least I was right that Manchego is Spanish, so I didn't lose any points by guessing.

I knew about Niantic because Peachbox posted it on the Current Events/Popular Culture thread.
In related news, a New Jersey man filed suit against Niantic Inc., the Pokemon Company, and Nintendo Company, alleging that the companies placed Pokemon on his lawn without his consent and that the creatures attracted trespassers onto his property.

That was odd. I completely blanked on 2-4 because I've never played the game, but 6-8-10 I didn't have to think about (10 because I've read the book, 8 because the lawsuits have been in the news a lot). It's nice to score a 69 when at first glance at one of the category titles, I was sure I was going to take a big zero.nlw44 wrote:Boy, I saw Pokemon as a category title and was sure I was dead in the water. I've made it a policy to do an awful lot of WAGging in this, my rookie season of SHC. But it hasn't served me terribly well, so I suspect that next summer I will clam a whole lot more.xxaaaxx wrote:Missing Taft was annoying. Mentally, those events sometimes get lost in this generic "early 1910's" haze, and I didn't want to take a chance that they might've been 1913+. BAH. I need to WAG more instead of clamming (famous last words).

I hope my spelling on 8 was close enough, even though it's a different thing. I hope it's not an Invisible Man/The Invisible Man situation. I'm assuming the paint is pronounced with a per that rhymes with fur (or with a schwa), not with pair.
EDIT: Also, I've definitely NHO shakshuka. Looks good.

I took a flier on the ten-pointer with the only spicy North African foodstuff I could name. Normally I would have held back, but I suspected it was the only thing between me and a perfect score for the third day in a row. Ah well.
edit: my suspicion was incorrect

On the four-pointer, "can be heard" (as opposed to "could be heard") made me think the sitcom was currently running. Ah well.
Teems with quiet fun.
