Thursday, November 17, 2011 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
Game Recap for Show #6249, 2011-11-17
CONTESTANTS
Glenn Sullivan, a psychology professor from Lexington, Virginia
Matt Andelman, a family law attorney from Silver Spring, Maryland
Ellen Lewis, a retired high school math teacher from Mount Vernon, New York (whose 1-day cash winnings total $10,000)
OPENING REMARKS
Alex: Thanks. $10,000 is probably the lowest winner's amount in many, many weeks here on Jeopardy! If you were watching yesterday, you'll recall what happened. None of our contestants was able to come up with the correct response, but Ellen--very cautious going into Final--wagered just $600. She was left with the most cash--$10,000. And that's why she's back with us today to defend. Matt and Glenn, welcome aboard. Pick up the signaling devices, all three of you, because we're going into the Jeopardy! Round right now. And we get to deal, together, with these categories...
JEOPARDY! ROUND CATEGORIES
AIRSHIPS (5/5, including 1 correct Daily Double)
THEIR ONLY TOP 10 POP HIT (5/5)
THAT'S ANCIENT HISTORY! (5/5)

JEOPARDY! ROUND DAILY DOUBLE
Glenn found the Daily Double on the 12th clue. Ellen had $200, Matt had $2,000, and Glenn was at $3,400. Glenn wagered $1,700.
AIRSHIPS $1000: He began construction of his first airship in June 1898 in a wooden hangar on Lake Constance
SCORES AT THE FIRST BREAK
Glenn: $5,500
Matt: $2,000
Ellen: $1,000
CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS
Alex: Glenn Sullivan, a psychology professor from Virginia, is the first player we introduce today. And he is a marathoner, and not only is he a marathoner, ladies and gentlemen, he's a winner. You won a marathon race.
Glenn: I have, Alex. Uh--
Alex: That's quite a claim to fame.
Glenn: Yes, it is. Uh, the--the trick is to, uh, pick your race very carefully. Uh, pick one in the mountains of Northern California on a cold, rainy day a couple of days after Christmas, in which only two people show up.
Alex: [Laughs] And the other one was...
Glenn: He was a little less competitive than me.
Alex: Okay. [Laughs] Well, good for you anyway. You can still claim that you won a marathon.
Alex: Matt Andelman from Silver Spring, Maryland. Family law attorney with... identical triplet 4-year-old girls?
Matt: Yes. Uh, it was the shock of a lifetime. Uh, my wife and I were gonna be stopping at two kids. Uh, we have an older boy as well, uh, and, uh, then we got the news that we were getting our second, third, and fourth, all at the same time.
Alex: How do you tell 'em apart?
Matt: Uh, now it's a little, uh, easier. Uh, ages 2 to 3, it got a little hard. So hopefully we've got the right ones, uh, where we think they are.
Alex: Okay, good.
[Matt chuckles]
Alex: Ellen Lewis is a retired high school math teacher. What was the most difficult math subject that your students dealt with?
Ellen: I think for many of them, um, I dealt with a variety of students, all the way from, uh, lower-level students up through AP Calculus, so different students had different problems. But I'd say the geometry. The students I had, geometry was the big, um, sticking point for them. When they had to do proofs, they said, "I don't like geometry very much."
SCORES AT THE END OF THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
Glenn: $6,300
Ellen: $5,000
Matt: $5,000

Re: Thursday, November 17, 2011 Game Recap & Discussion (SPOILERS)
Matt Andelman did very well today, and based on his quality of play I thought that he might have a legitimate shot at stringing together a few wins. Four of the last five regular games have been Crushes, but the last two of them have resulted in a loss for the player with the lead (Evan Sandman and Matt Andelman).
By the way, the three consecutive games won by Evan Sandman, Emily Gifford and Ellen Lewis marks the first time that three regular Jeopardy! games in a row have been won by a player whose name begins with the letter "E" since October 3, 6 and 7 of 2008, when Erik Nelson earned his second through fourth wins.

Historic Documents
It's the shorter, better-known name of the document "United States-Vietnam Relations, 1945-1967".
Matt Andelman: $13.400-$4,000=$9,400
Glenn Sullivan: $8,650+$6,951=$15,601...now a 1-day champion with $15,601
Ellen Lewis: $7,800-$2,200=$5,600

Spoiler
What is (are?) The Pentagon Papers. Ellen had no guess. (She started to write something beginning with se) Matt said the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution.

Okay, I don't watch Jeopardy but once in a blue moon...I saw today's program and had to post. I think I'll repost this as a new subject because I think it's crazy!
The first letter alphabetically to appear alone as a periodic table element symbol" Matt answered 'H', and he was told he was wrong and that it was B, for Boron. I immediately knew this was wrong, because element #1 is H-Hydrogen!! I consider his score at the time...$12,600. He lost $1600 instead of gaining that, creating a swing of $3200. I think he lost because of this, as he would've likely been uncatchable heading to Final Jeopardy given that difference in score. Has anyone noticed that this Jeopardy error cost him the game???

Last I checked B comes ALPHABETICALLY before H. Just saying ... (but thanks for posting in the correct thread )kwinters311 wrote:Okay, I don't watch Jeopardy but once in a blue moon...I saw today's program and had to post. I think I'll repost this as a new subject because I think it's crazy!

On the other hand, I never knew that the Pentagon Papers had another name. I, too, said the Tonkin Resolution.
Also, the "Killing Me softly" clue ($200 in Their Only Top-10). What the hell group was that?

Oh, man! Total instaget on FJ; I'm a Cold War historian, so...yeah. I think it might have been tricky for non-specialists under a certain age. In some alternate universe, this was the board the Sullivan Compliance Company picked for my second game....
Ellen, Matt and Glenn were a lot of fun to watch, and I have a good feeling about tomorrow night's game. Mellissa and Morgan were fun backstage, so it should be a good one.

I think you just brain-burped there, but then so did the players. Seriously, how long would it take to "get there"? "a.. nope, B... BORON!" Certainly by the time the first two missed the third player should've had it.kwinters311 wrote:The first letter alphabetically to appear alone as a periodic table element symbol" ...?
Got today's FJ same as yesterday's: thought of a viable answer right away, spent some time thinking of something better and failed, so went with first thought, and was right!

And by my count it is only the second time we've had three consecutive 1-time champs whose names start with the same letter (at least, of games in the Archive). The other trio was Boze Hadleigh, Bridget Boyd, and Bill Johnson, who won on March 20, 23, and 24, 1998.KenJenningsFan74 wrote:By the way, the three consecutive games won by Evan Sandman, Emily Gifford and Ellen Lewis marks the first time that three regular Jeopardy! games in a row have been won by a player whose name begins with the letter "E" since October 3, 6 and 7 of 2008, when Erik Nelson earned his second through fourth wins.

I love the fact that even though he or she knew that the complaint about Boron/Hydrogen was properly placed in this thread, they still thought that they should start a new thread about it just because IT WAS SO OUTRAGEOUS!
Haha, good luck starting that new thread with your 1 career post.
Now, for a real question, did anyone else notice that Glenn said "fundamentalism", rather than "fundamentalist" as a response to this clue: "A strict, often literal adherent to a faith's tenets & practices"? This was a $600 clue in the first category, just the 3rd clue of the game, but I was surprised first to hear Alex accept this, and then not to have it corrected when Glenn hit the Daily Double just before the first break. (He had $3,400 and added $1,700 with "Who is Zeppelin?")
It seemed to me like Glenn clearly gave the wrong answer to that clue, and he should have been negged for it. If they had used "adherence", rather than "adherent", then fundamentalism would have fit. Am I nitpicking, or was this a clear mistake by Alex and/or the judges? Being so early, I certainly don't think that it would have had much of an effect on the outcome of the game, but I still don't think Glenn should have gotten credit for that response.

Final Jeopardy! was an instaget for me. I did a lot of research on Daniel Ellsberg a few college semesters ago. My journalistic studies have served me well.

I brain-burped too and glazed over the "alphabetically" part, ready to neg on H like the first player did.Paucle wrote:I think you just brain-burped there, but then so did the players.
It took until the music was winding down for Pentagon Papers to come to me.
--add, wow, my first post too, I thought I posted two or three times in the early days after the WWTBAM Bored, where I am from, was temporarily hosting J!--

Alex: "We have a very special guest delivering clues for us in this Double Jeopardy! round"
Me: "PleasenotOprahpleasenotOprahpleasenotOprahpleasenotOprah"
At least Ms. Napolitano wasn't a bad clue deliverer (but then I have disagreed with some others who have said other readers are bad clue readers)
No hope on FJ. US History is an admitted weakness on mine - have always said I should study it if The Call comes, but, with the adult test coming up, I should probably study it for that, or else The Call will never come!

I did hear that and was waiting for him to be retroactively negged. I can't recall exactly, but it seems not that long ago that a contestant was negged right away for a response that contained the correct root but was the wrong part of speech. Maybe that's one of those really obscure rules? If the clue calls for a noun, you're OK as long as you use any noun that contains the root of the intended response? Hmmm.jeff6286 wrote:Now, for a real question, did anyone else notice that Glenn said "fundamentalism", rather than "fundamentalist" as a response to this clue: "A strict, often literal adherent to a faith's tenets & practices"? I think I prefer Oprah to any member of the Obama administration.
FJ: Paris Peace treaty?, nope 1972, Gulf of Tonkin?, nope, 1964. Although I lived through it (and we knew how to stage a protest, unlike these lame Occupiers), did not get to Pentagon Papers.

Alex reveals the clue: Gulf of Tonkin Resolution
Alex talks before revealing the contestant responses: Pentagon Papers
Ellsberg/Pentagon Papers has served me well enough over the years watching game shows. If only I had bothered during that time to learn anything about the papers themselves.
Matt twice was correct after both opponents missed. That's a great way to get bonus points on clues when you are not superior on the buzzer. Or did he become braver/smarter with choices eliminated?
Glenn must owe a lot of us here thanks for retroactively yelling "Yellow Submarine" over and over to him.
I had to look up Johnny Cash's chart because it was news to me about only one Top 10.
#17: I Walk the Line
#17: Ring of Fire
#32: Folsom Prison Blues
#2: A Boy Named Sue
Ellen's #2 interview story was geometry is tough. I think she's like me that perhaps it was best to not have to even make Alex go to #3.
