Does anyone know if the 50-category written test at the audition is normally easier than the online test (or 50 average show questions)?

It is somewhat easier, and you can go back and write down an answer if you happen to think of it later.

Hm. I remember posting something similar last night but apparently my post has disappeared. :?:

Anyway, I wanted to ask anyone who auditioned in the last year or two, was the in-person test pencil-and-paper only? Just wanted to confirm that you could still go back and change/add answers.

Yes, it was pen & paper when I did it & I was able to write one of Alex's clues in shorthand & then write the answer later.

Yep, pen and paper, responding to questions on a video or screen. You don't have to write answers in the form of a question. You have like 8 seconds to answer each one. Although they make a point of saying, "You won't have time to go back and change answers," if you're sharp and quick, you can. I've changed/filled in after the fact at almost every try out.

After being to 5 in-persons, I've found the in-persons a little more difficult in content. Yet very comparable.

Looks like I got bypassed this year. Bummer.

Hello! I'm new here; this was my second year to take the online test. What a wealth of resources you all have compiled!

I received my audition invitation email earlier today - June 6th in Los Angeles. I've dreamt of being on Jeopardy! for years, so this will be a great experience regardless of how I do.

Can someone help me find threads here about the auditions - what to expect and how to prepare?

Thanks so much!

I blogged about it - it's a lot of fun. This might give you some idea.

BTW, watching the three players last night after having tried out, I would think they would NOT be selected were they not famous!

Just curious, You've been to 5 in person interviews, how many times do you think you've qualified to be chosen for an interview (assuming the "get 35 rule" on the test applies). I'm wondering if you score a 40 on the test, how likely you are to get called. Five leads me to believe the odds aren't all that bad. The hard odds seem like getting from the interview to the show.

I know I've read were one person thought it was like 1 in 10 get selected from the interview to the show.

Good luck!

General rule of thumb: your appearance and actions should demonstrate that you're ready to step onto the Jeopardy! stage. Dress professionally, speak up, don't interrupt, follow directions (most important during the mock game are efficiently using the signaling device**--it's not a buzzer, btw, don't wait to be prompted when it's up to you to pick the next category/amount, and keep things moving), make eye contact, act confidently, show/talk about what's interesting about yourself, don't guess wildly during the mock game.

** Practice with a clickable pen

I'm sure it's been talked about several times, but I'll ask again, as I can't find the answer: how many people take the online tests? Any official numbers or are these estimates?

If I remember correctly, Maggie said that 100,000 take the online test every year, and from that group they invite 4,000 to audition, and from that group 300 are asked to be on the show.

Btw, since they don't disclose how many of the 100,000 achieve scores that they consider audition-worthy (i.e., pass), it's hard to say what the odds are of a test passer getting invited to audition.

If I recall correctly (I made notes), about 100,000 take the online test. About 2,000 to 3,000 go to auditions (she didn't say how many are invited to audition) and from that about 400 appear on the show (she didn't say how many are invited to go on the show).

Part of what I'd like to see on this board (and specifically in threads like this one) is enough statistics on who takes the test, with what score, and who gets invited, to figure this out on our own.

It's easy enough to know your score on the Online Test, using the threads that show up here with answers soon after the test. As long as most people accurately remember how they answered and honestly self-score based on the answer key, we can see what the scores were and who was invited to audition (though it can take months to know that TPTB have used up all invitations)...also there's nothing to say that a 35 in one city has a high % of invitations where it takes a 37 in another city if they, perhaps, got a a glut of people who scored well in that city.

On the written 50-category test at audition, there is no record of the questions (although someone could audio record the test as it's administered, I've never heard of that being done, not that I know much. Further, they ask that the questions on the audition test not be discussed outside of that room because that test is reused), so there isn't much of a way for auditioners to know their scores beyond WAGs.

I know I got a 40 on the online test and that was enough for the audition invite. (The email arrived about 3 weeks after the online test. The audition was about 3 weeks after that.) In a prior year, I think I got a 34 (not sure if I remember) and didn't receive an invite.

I think I got in the high 40s on the written test at audition (I had about 7 or 8 that I knew I had guessed on and "thought" I had the other 42 or 43 flat-out correct. During the post-test discussion with others, I found that I'd definitely guessed wrong on only 1 and guessed right on the remaining 6 or 7, putting my score at a possible 49, barring error in my judgement.) But that's a self-score based on memory, what the others in the room said my correct guesses were, and my own evaluation...not entirely trustworthy.

But even if I got a 49, there's still a large chance that I won't be invited either due to my interview, vile appearance, game play, or just the fact that they only use 400 contestants a year out of 2,000 to 3,000 who audition. Someone who didn't fare well on the written test at audition, unless s/he has a photographic memory and can recite all the clues and then go check them, won't know whether s/he got a 30 or a 35.

So the post-audition part of the statistics won't be discernible, unless I'm mistaken.

At at least some auditions they have told people whether they passed the written test.

I though they didn't do this at all anymore.
