TD 193: A Tour Across the Game Show Timeline

Post by lieph82 »

Welcome to TD 193, your chronological tour of the game show world!

(Spoiler alert: there is very little game show minutiae in this TD)

Here are some rules and general guidelines. Note especially rules 7, 8, 9, 12, and 13. Also note that the clarifications post underneath the questions post contains information that you may find helpful in answering the questions.

Please private message me your answers by Tuesday, June 3, 2014 at 11:59 PM EDT. Do not post them in this thread or anywhere else on this board.

Rules:
Spoiler
1. Your objective for each question is to provide the correct answer that you believe will be the least popular.

2. You are to work individually on the questions and you can only use the information stored in your brain. No intentional outside research is allowed. If you happen to incidentally stumble onto an answer between your reading of the questions and your submission of answers, using that answer is perfectly acceptable.

3. Use of a calculator is not permitted on this TD.

4. You may only give one answer for each question.

5. CORRECT answers score the number of players who give that answer.

6. INCORRECT answers score the SHEEP (most popular correct answer for that question) + 25% of the number of entrants, rounded to the nearest whole number.

7. You may, but are not required to, SKIP one question, which will score 5% of the number of entrants, rounded to the nearest whole number. Mark it "SKIP", and do not give an answer.

8. You may, but are not required to, TRUST THE MOB for one question, which will score the SHEEP + 5% of the number of entrants, rounded to the nearest whole number. Players who use this option will not count towards the point total for the most popular answer. Mark it "TRUST THE MOB", and do not give an answer.

9. You may, but are not required to, use a DAILY DOUBLE on one question. Mark it "YOUR ANSWER (DAILY DOUBLE)".
/////If you pick a correct answer that, including yourself, scores less than or equal to 50% of the SHEEP, you will score negative 10% of the number of entrants, rounded to the nearest whole number.
/////If you pick a correct answer that, including yourself, scores greater than 50% of the SHEEP, you will score the SHEEP.
/////If you pick an incorrect answer, you will score twice the SHEEP.

10. Blank answers will be considered incorrect.

11. If you try to use SKIP, TRUST THE MOB, or DAILY DOUBLE more than once, only the first usage will count. The other question(s) will be scored normally. Only one help can be used per question.

12. Following some questions, there are mini questions labeled BONUS. If you answer a BONUS mini question correctly, a point or points will be subtracted from your score for the preceding question. Exactly how many points will be subtracted is explained after each mini question. You do not need to answer the preceding question correctly to be eligible for the BONUS. Whether you give an incorrect answer, correct answer, or use a help on the preceding question, you are eligible for the BONUS. Unless otherwise stated, you may only give one answer for each BONUS mini question.

13. Following some questions, there are mini questions labeled NESTED BONUS. These are like the BONUS mini questions, but your answers to them are predicated on your answer to the previous question. Thus, you need to answer the preceding question correctly in order to be eligible for the NESTED BONUS. If you use SKIP or TRUST THE MOB for the preceding question, you are not eligible for the NESTED BONUS. Please do not answer a NESTED BONUS mini question if you did not give an answer to the preceding question. If you use DAILY DOUBLE for the preceding question and give a correct answer, you are eligible for the NESTED BONUS. Unless otherwise stated, you may only give one answer for each NESTED BONUS mini question.

14. Spelling is not important as long as you're close, but pay close attention to the instructions. If a response needs to be a certain number of letters long or needs to contain certain letters, any spelling must conform to these rules if it is to be considered correct. For some questions, full names or titles are required. Nicknames are acceptable for first names, but not for last names. I will be flexible, but you can save yourself from my judgment by spelling your answers as close to correctly as you can.

15. Scoring is additive. In case of a tie, the player with the greatest number of singletons comes out on top. If it's still a tie, we go to number of doubletons, tripletons, etc.

16. Please send your answers to me in the following format (this is just an example; obviously you don't have to use your helps on the same questions):
1: Answer
-Answer to NESTED BONUS
-Answer to BONUS
2: Answer
3. Answer
4. TRUST THE MOB
5. SKIP
-Answer to NESTED BONUS
6. Answer (DAILY DOUBLE)
etc.

17. Have fun and good luck!

Questions:
Spoiler
1. What’s My Line?
Put on those tuxedos, because we’re going to start with a classic and a personal favorite, the absurdly formal Sunday night panel game, What’s My Line?, which premiered in 1950. In the spirit of Arlene Francis and friends, here are twelve movie characters who are definitely bigger than a breadbox:

Ron Woodroof
Truman Capote
Sydney Prosser
Juno MacGuff
William Whitaker
Maria Bennett
Hanna Schmitz
Daniel Plainview
George Valentin
Marilyn Monroe
Nina Sayers
Mark Zuckerberg

Just as in What’s My Line?, you’ll have to name the occupation of one of these movie characters. You can’t ask them any questions, but luckily for you, each of these roles has earned their respective actor or actress a nomination for an Academy Award for Best Actor (or Actress) between 2007 and 2013.

Pick one of the movie characters above and name his/her occupation at the start of his/her movie.

-Your response should be formatted like this: John Smith: Banker.

There are 12 valid answers to this question.

NESTED BONUS: Blockbusters
Who won the Academy Award for which your chosen character’s actor/actress was nominated? (-2 points)

BONUS: Name Droppers
What is the full name of the first host of What’s My Line?? (-1 point)

2. Name That Tune
Name That Tune premiered on television in 1953. Contestants listened to a live band play a song and, when they recognized it, they had to run across the stage, ring the bell, and name that tune! In this TD, you will also have to name a tune. I hope you don't Tell Me that It's All Over Now!

Name a Rolling Stones single whose title starts with the letter “S."

-Ignore all parentheticals in song titles for this question.

There are 17 valid answers to this question.

3. Tic Tac Dough
In 1956, we were introduced to the first version of Tic Tac Dough, a clever game that mixed the strategy (sort of) of Tic-Tac-Toe with more traditional trivia questions. Any kid who caught reruns of the Martindale version on GSN remembers running to their parents and asking why there wasn't any food on the show if it had "dough" in the title. That's a really good question, but unfortunately it's above my pay grade. What I can do, however, is introduce some good cooking to Tic Tac Dough.

Name an ingredient in Julia Child's "Coq au vin" recipe that a strict vegan can comfortably consume.

There are 14 valid answers to this question.

BONUS: Win, Lose, or Draw
In his original run, Thom McKee played 88 games of Tic Tac Dough. How many of these games were draws? (-2 points for bullseye, -1 point for being 1 off in either direction)

4. To Tell the Truth
1956 also marked the premiere of To Tell the Truth, a game in which three people (one person with a claim to fame and two imposters) all claimed to be the same person, and celebrity panelists had to ask cunning questions in order to determine who was lying and who was telling the truth. In my humble opinion, this was and still is the most brilliant concept ever thought up for a not-formally-trivia game show. Russian novelist Vladimir Nabokov and modern fantasy maestro George R.R. Martin both populate their worlds with unreliable narrators, scoundrel protagonists, and characters who have a little bit of a problem telling the truth.

Name either:

The first and last names of a title character in a Vladimir Nabokov novel.

Or:

The first and last names of a Point of View character in George R. R. Martin's A Game of Thrones.

-I'm not qualified to decide whether the "Laura" in "The Original of Laura" refers to Flora or Aurora, so I'm going to disqualify that unfinished novel for this question.

There are 15 correct answers to this question.

5. Match Game
The first incarnation of Match Game started airing on NBC in 1962. The game later evolved into the jocular, raucous affair we know and love, and matching one's answers to those of the celebrity panelists was far from a science. Studying for my periodic table quizzes in Chemistry class, I often wished I could match my Au to whatever Charles Nelson Reilly could come up with, instead of to stupid freaking gold. Well, like any good bitter former student, I am going to continue the cycle of abuse and make you do what I had to do.

Name a chemical element on the Periodic Table of Elements that is not a transition metal and whose elemental symbol can be written out solely with the letters in “Match Game."

-I am counting Meitnerium as a transition metal, so it is not a valid answer.

There are 15 valid answers to this question.

NESTED BONUS: The Biggest Loser
What is the relative atomic mass of your chosen element, rounded to the nearest whole number? (-2 points)

6. Jeopardy!
The original Jeopardy!, hosted by Art Fleming, premiered in 1964, forcing contestants to answer in the form of a question as its main gimmick. The name of the show is rather silly, in my opinion, and the exclamation point makes it a pain in the ass to write about. I happen to think that the name is the only flaw in this otherwise perfect game, which is still around in its current form fifty years later and is the reason we're all here. Here's a clue about countries in jeopardy. Don't forget to answer in the form of a question!

Name either:

A country (or former country) against which the United States has formally declared war.

Or:

A country (or former country) which the United States engaged militarily without formal Congressional authorization between 1900 and 2011, inclusive.

-You must answer in the form of a question, or your response will be counted as incorrect.

There are 20 valid answers to this question.

7. Gambit
1972 gave us Gambit, the blackjack-trivia mix that was revived fairly successfully by GSN in 2008. A version of Gambit even taped at the Tropicana Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. Amazingly, more than ten times as many people live in Las Vegas than in Carson City, the state capital of Nevada.

Name either:

One of the ten most populous cities (incorporated area, unincorporated town, or census-designated place (CDP)) in Nevada.

Or:

A state capital that is not one of the ten most populous cities (incorporated area, unincorporated town, or CDP) in its state.

There are 15 valid answers to this question.

BONUS: Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?
What was the capital of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia? (-1 point)

8. Wheel of Fortune
In 1975 came the original network version of TPH's wheelhouse show, the one we all love to rag on, Wheel of Fortune! Who wouldn't want to make five figures for playing half an hour of hangman and spinning a giant wheel? In this TD, there's no wheel, and there's a significantly smaller prize, but you will get to solve some word puzzles. The category for all of these puzzles is "Before & After." And here they are! Vanna?

*** I M** Y*UR M****R **R*SA

*H* *N* *H* *NL* **S* *** W*S **S**R***

*I***I** *F **L*M*I* **I*E**I*Y

***M**RIC C**C**** *F **RI**I*N*

*I***E BI**O**ED F*O*

TH* **UN* *N* TH* *U*Y W***I**

**O’S *F***D OF V****N** *OO** P*C*?

*I* *I** I* **E *AN*

*I* *Y*-**RG*** **OLU*IO*

***SFI*L* P*** *V**U*

*N**N*** *** *OR L***

**ON **N* **C*A** T*E T****

Solve one of the word puzzles above.

There are 12 valid answers to this question.

9. Family Feud
1976 was when we first got to see Richard Dawson kissing wives in front of their husbands and daughters in front of their fathers as the host of Family Feud. When you get a bunch of family members together for any length of time, there's bound to be some good-natured (or less than good-natured) bickering. In many Jewish households, the Passover seders provide a perfect opportunity for extended family to get together, tell the story of the Exodus, eat some good food, and argue about politics.

Name either:

One of the ten plagues the Lord brings upon the Egyptians in the book of Exodus.

Or:

One of the six items traditionally placed on the Seder plate, according to Chabad.

There are 16 valid answers to this question.

10. Password Plus
Password Plus, which added a word puzzle to the classic word-guessing game, started airing in 1979, and I'm still waiting for Goodson and Todman to finish the equation. Password plus what? In honor of the First Lady of Password, Betty White, who is still working her butt off in her 90s:

Name a prime number between 1 and 1,000 that has a tens digit of 9.

You are welcome to do any calculations you'd like, but use of a calculator is not permitted.

There are 15 valid answers to this question.

BONUS: Survivor
Who are the only three women to have won Survivor with a prime number of jury votes? (-1 point for each correct answer)

11. Card Sharks
Higher! Lower! What on Earth do you do with that dreaded 8? Card Sharks premiered in 1978, and its simple concept and beautiful showgirls kept the show going through nearly 2000 episodes. One of the only negatives? The producers totally missed out on making the first ever game show to take place completely underwater. I'd be willing to bet that there are some sharks that are better at picking higher or lower than some of those contestants...

Name someone who won a gold medal for the USA in the finals of any swimming event in the 2012 Summer Olympics.

There are 14 valid answers to this question.

NESTED BONUS: The Amazing Race
What race(s) did your chosen swimmer win in the London Games? (If your chosen swimmer won multiple events, you must name them all to get the bonus) (-2 points)

12. Legends of the Hidden Temple
A cult classic which began airing in 1993, Legends of the Hidden Temple involved preteens and young teenagers completing physical and mental tasks for Olmec the Talking Olmec Head and racing around a Mayan temple to steal artifacts protected by mysterious temple guards. Any '90s kid can name the 6 teams: Red Jaguars, Blue Barracudas, Green Monkeys, Orange Iguanas, Purple Parrots, and Silver Snakes. Clearly, the Orange Iguanas and the Purple Parrots were the coolest teams. So now, you, too, get to go on a worldwide treasure hunting expedition as Orange Iguanas and Purple Parrots! Today's treasures: flags.

Name a UN member state whose current national flag contains the color orange and/or the color purple.

-If you think your answer contains a debatable shade of reddish purple or reddish orange, describe the flag to me, making it clear that your issue is with subjective naming of colors, not with knowledge of the flag, and I will tell you whether or not that flag is a correct answer. You can only do this once, for one answer.

There are 12 valid answers to this question.

NESTED BONUS: The Price is Right
What is the currency of your chosen nation? (-2 points)

13. Who Wants to be a Millionaire?
1999 brought us the American premiere of Who Wants to be a Millionaire?, the most internationally popular television franchise of all time. Although WWTBAM-mania has cooled down in the past fifteen years, people still really want to be millionaires, shockingly. In fact, if they had the choice, I think most people would like to be billionaires. So, multiplying that goal of $1 million dollars by the all-important $32,000 marker in classic WWTBAM:

Give the first and last names of someone with a net worth of $32 billion or greater, according to forbes.com's "The World's Billionaires List."

There are 19 valid answers to this question.

14. Friend or Foe
2002 saw the premiere of the short-lived GSN classic Friend or Foe, which taught us that you never really know who's your friend and who's just waiting to stick a knife in your back. So, now it's your choice: Friend or Foe? In this TD, Friend is represented by the newly ended sitcom How I Met Your Mother, which ostensibly tells the story of how he met his kids' mother while really cleverly narrating the lives of five young and wild New Yorkers, while Foe is represented by AMC megahit Breaking Bad, in which a cunning meth dealer eludes his police and drug world enemies at every turn.

Give the first and last names of a member of the main cast of either How I Met Your Mother or Breaking Bad, and the first and last names of the character whom he/she plays.

-Your response should be formatted like this: Jennifer Aniston: Rachel Green, if we were doing Friends or, in case of exception noted in the clarifications, like this: Kaley Cuoco: Penny, if we were doing The Big Bang Theory.

-Actors who are credited after the opening sequence ("starring," not "guest starring") as opposed to at the end of the show, for any or all seasons, are part of the main cast of the show. Or, if an actor is uncredited because his/her role is voice-only, I'd consider them part of the main cast if their voice is heard in all or nearly all of the episodes of a given season. In this case, for the bonus, you would give the episode in which we first hear their voice.

There are 18 valid answers to this question.

NESTED BONUS: You Bet Your Life
What is the name of the first episode of How I Met Your Mother or Breaking Bad in which your chosen character appears? (-1 point if the answer to this question is the name of the series premiere, -3 points otherwise)

15. Show Me the Money
2006 gave us Show me the Money, possibly the worst traditional game show ever to air in prime time. Luckily, we've been able to watch plenty of other people get shown tons of money on better game shows! In August 1999, Michael Shutterly won $500,000 on Who Wants to be a Millionaire?, which made him the biggest solo winner in the history of American television game shows.

Name either:

Someone who earned the title of biggest cash and prize winner in the history of American television game shows after Michael Shutterly.

Or:

Someone who, as of this post, is in the top 10 all-time for cash and prize winnings on American television game shows.

Clarifications and Helpful Information:
Spoiler
Question 1
-I will be lenient with descriptions of occupations; just make it clear that you know how the character you choose makes a living at the opening of their film. I will ask you to be more specific if necessary.

-If a character has two occupations of relatively equal importance at the beginning of their movie, either occupation will be accepted, and both will count as the same answer.

Question 2
-Song titles must be exact.

-Singles that were reissued or edited will only count once.

Question 3
-Ms. Child modified the recipe slightly each time she wrote a new cookbook. I will take any ingredient that she lists in her recipe for "Coq au vin" in any of her cookbooks as a correct answer, as long as it contains no meat or animal products.

Question 4
-Short story collections, plays, poems, and translations of other authors' works do not count as a novels. Works that may be characterized as novellas do count as novels, including unfinished novels/novellas that were published posthumously.

-Both Nabokov's Russian and English works are in play for this question. I'm working with the first-edition translations of the titles for the works originally written in Russian; if there are major translation issues, we'll deal with them if and when they come up.

-For the first option, the character's first or last name (no patronymic necessary) must be included in the title of a Nabokov novel. If only the first name or the last name is included in the title, I still want both the first and last names of the character to which the title refers. For instance, if we were doing Austen, Emma is the title of the novel, but Emma Woodhouse would be your answer. If we were doing Flaubert, Madame Bovary is the title of the novel, but Emma Bovary would be your answer.

-The exception, of course, is if either the character's first name or last name is not mentioned anywhere in the book. In that case, no need to make up a first or last name- just give the one mentioned name as your answer.

-A Game of Thrones refers to only the first book in the A Song of Ice and Fire series.

-For the second option, a Point Of View character is any character through whose eyes we view the events of a chapter of the book. GRRM helpfully puts the name of the POV character for each chapter at the very beginning of every chapter except the prologue. Again, I need a first name and a last name, unless either is not mentioned in the text.

Question 5
-Do not worry about capitalization agreement—you can use any of the letters in “Match Game” as either capital letters or lowercase letters.

-Please give the name of the element, not its symbol.

-The elements in the extra rows at the bottom of most tables do not count as transition metals for this quiz.

Question 6
-Answers were taken from the 2013 study done by The Woodrow Wilson Center & the National Capital Area Political Science Association, "Congress & the President at War: Checks or Imbalance?"

-A country (or former country) refers to a current UN member state or former sovereign state.

-If the country has undergone some form of name change since the declaration of war or unauthorized military action, please give the name of the country at the time of the declaration of war or unauthorized military action.

Question 7
-Answers were taken from each state's census's most recent population estimates (2012 or 2013).

-For reference, Whitney is the 11th most populous city in Nevada (38,857), and Pahrump is the 12th (37,030).

-As might be clear from the examples above, when I say city, I am including unincorporated towns, census-designated places (CDPs), and incorporated areas.

Question 8
-You only need to send me your one solution; you do not need to tell me which puzzle you solved.

-Each asterisk represents a missing letter. Each space represents a break between words.

-Not all of the "Before & After" solutions can be split into two answers using word breaks; for some of the responses, "merging," including slight orthographic changes, might be contained within a word. For example, it's possible that a solution could be something like "RUSSIAN CERFBOARD."

-Normal "Wheel of Fortune" rules apply, meaning that if you see an "O" in a puzzle, all of the "O's" are revealed; none of the asterisks in that puzzle represent an "O."

-I obviously have specific solutions in mind, but I am open to creative alternate solutions; if you come up with an alternate solution, it will count as the same response as if you responded with my solution, but you'll get a pat on the back during the reveal!

Question 9
-For the plagues, any valid translation of a plague in the biblical text will count as the same correct answer. If a plague could be translated as both "gonnorhea" and "balding," both answers will be accepted and will count as the same correct response.

Question 10
-For the bonus, first names only are acceptable if only one contestant with that name has appeared on Survivor. For instance, if you gave the answer "Betsy" and there had only been one Besty on Survivor, that is specific enough. If you gave the answer "Betsy" and there had been multiple Betsy's on Survivor, I'd ask you to be more specific (whether your answer was right or wrong). To be more specific, you'd need to either give a last name or the season (number or location) in which they appeared. If two contestants with this name appeared on the same season, you could give a last name or describe the contestant you're going for. Just give me some way of pinning down who you're talking about.

Question 11
-Correct answers do not include American swimmers who won gold medals by swimming solely in the qualifying heats of a relay.

Question 12
-Nothing again!

Question 13
-I need both first and last names.

-For reference, Sergey Brin of Google just missed the cut at $31.8B, as did Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook at $28.5B. That was at the time of my first post, so it's possible that they will hit $32B at some point during the TD period and will thus qualify as correct answers!

Question 14
-I need two full names: a first name and last name of an actor/actress, and a first name and last name of the character that actor/actress plays. The only exception is if any of this information does not exist, in which case you only need to give the information that it is possible to give.

Question 15
-Reality competition shows count as game shows.

-Some correct answers participated in team game shows: If a person won $300,000 on Kansas Cats as a member of a five-person team and the money was split equally among teammates, then $60,000 would be added to this person's total winnings.

-Each valid answer to this question appeared on one or more of the following game shows. Conversely, money was won by at least one valid answer to this question on each of the following game shows:

Jeopardy!
Twenty One
Survivor
Duel
Are you Smarter Than a 5th Grader?
Win Ben Stein's Money
The Million Second Quiz
Greed
1 vs. 100
Million Dollar Mind Game
Wheel of Fortune
Grand Slam
Sale of the Century
Who Wants to be a Millionaire?
The Amazing Race

BUMP now that TD 191 is over!

Amendment to nested bonus for #14:
A participant (thank you!) pointed out a minor typo in the nested bonus to question 14 (it said Friends instead of How I Met Your Mother). It is now correct.

Amendment to bonus for #10:
For the bonus on question 10, first names only are acceptable if only one contestant with that name has appeared on Survivor. For instance, if you gave the answer "Betsy" and there had only been one Besty on Survivor, that is specific enough. If you gave the answer "Betsy" and there had been multiple Betsy's on Survivor, I'd ask you to be more specific (whether your answer was right or wrong). I've added two answers for question 12.

Amendment to #7:
To be clear, the list that I'm using for question #7 includes unincorporated towns, census-designated places (CDPs), and incorporated areas. The two examples I used, Whitney and Pahrump, are both unincorporated towns and CDPs.

The Rolling Stones question was originally a Beatles question (thanks Vermonter!) and the Nabokov question was originally a Dickens question (thanks mujason!).

10 people in. Plenty of time, but get those singletons while they're hot!

I'd rather get a singleton while it's cold.

I understand, those singletons can really burn your tongue if you're not careful.

*Getting this back up to the first page. If I sent you a "be more specific," be sure to respond! Your answer will be counted as incorrect if you do not.

Amendment to #5:
*I have added an answer to question 5.

Amendment to #14:
*From a PM conversation earlier today:
lieph82 wrote:
Garry Moore wrote:I'm assuming that it's up to me to figure out and you can't say if you're counting [redacted] on How I Met Your Mother as part of the main cast?
I think there's a "feel test" here. Think about Friends. There were many, many characters who show up in a ton of episodes throughout the run of the show, but the main cast comprises 6 people for all 10 seasons. On The Sopranos, the starring cast changed from season to season, but with the exception of Eugene Pontecorvo (and I'm still a little confused why he was credited as part of the main cast for a season), members of the starring cast played a much more prominent role in the season as a whole than members of the supporting cast. Typically, it shouldn't be too difficult to separate the stars from the recurrers.

Maybe think of the actor and character and think does ____ STAR in BB/HIMYM? That should work most of the time.

I'm going to post my answer to this in the thread for fairness.

Thank you for your question!
Amendment to #13:
*For #13, it's a bit of a fluid situation. To be fair, I will check the Forbes list every day and will count as correct anybody whose net worth was $32B or greater on any day from my first post in this thread to the deadline. That might even include Zuckerberg and Brin, the two examples in my clarifications post. 1 answer has been added already.

Thanks!
For this quiz, they don't count as transition metals. Thank you for the question.
Amendment to #8:
The second word puzzle for Question 8 should read as follows:

*H* *N* *H* *NL* **S* *** W*S **S**R***

I believe it read this way originally and may have mistakenly been changed during an edit. When I just looked at it, there was a Y at the end of the fourth word and a Y at the end of the fifth word. I'll send a PM to all current participants just in case this changes anything.

1. (What's My Line?) Pick one of the movie characters above and name his/her occupation at the start of his/her movie.

NESTED BONUS
Who won the Academy Award for which your chosen character’s actor/actress was nominated? (-2 points)

BONUS
What is the full name of the first host of What’s My Line?? (-1 point)

John Charles Patrick Croghan Daly, John Charles Daly

An unsurprising sheep here, and 7 singletons! Some people gave a character's occupation from the middle of a movie, not the very beginning, and so I had to count those responses as incorrect. We also see both sides of the Daily Double coin here; it can help you greatly or hurt you miserably.

For the bonus, those of you who came up with "John Charles Daly" were a little perplexed when I asked for more. The question was clearly a lot more obscure than I thought; one of the running gags of What's My Line was Bennett Cerf trying to introduce Daly by his full name and screwing it up, sometimes intentionally for humor, sometimes in earnest. Once, when Cerf introduced Daly as "John Charles Francis Croghan Daly," Daly finally corrected him and Cerf started to introduce him by his correct full name fairly often. Nobody got the full name, so I decided to give -1 point to everyone who got "John Charles Daly," and I would have given -2 points to anyone who could get the full name.

2. (Name That Tune) Name a Rolling Stones single whose title starts with the letter “S."

The sheep was somewhat of a surprise, but I was more surprised that so many obscure ones went untouched! This was originally a Beatles question which was thwarted by a previous TD, and that definitely would have been more accessible. One answer came at me from left field, and I gave credit for it. Another great TRUE DAILY DOUBLE, too!

3. (Tic Tac Dough) Name an ingredient in Julia Child's "Coq au vin" recipe that a strict vegan can comfortably consume.

BONUS:
In his original run, Thom McKee played 88 games of Tic Tac Dough. How many of these games were draws? (-2 points for bullseye, -1 point for being 1 off in either direction)

45, 44, 46

A couple of obvious answers for this one, so would it be too risky to throw out a random spice and hope for the best? I was surprised tomatoes and olive oil went unclaimed.

As for the bonus, if you knew McKee won 8 cars, and that the show gave you a car every time you beat 5 opponents, that would get you in the ballpark. Congrats to the two participants who got close to it or hit it exactly!

Water- Traditionally not counted as an ingredient, but I'm open to arguments.

Paprika- Wouldn't be too unusual to put some paprika in a Coq au vin, but I can't find any of Julia Childs's coq au vin recipes that say to do so. Let me know if you can! Wonderful get on the bonus btw!
