Don't know about the delay, but the first three posts have to be approved.
Glad I saw this. I'm in that limbo between taping and airing, and I guess I'll try to get those 3 posts out of the way.

WRT Manassas/Bull Run vs. Antietam vs. Gettysburg: I answered Manassas, but at the same time my wife said Antietam. I was pretty sure I was right, but after I heard her, I was just a little bit worried that Manassas might not not have been far enough from Arlington.

Gettysburg is within 10 miles of Maryland, and it can't be much more than 25 miles further to reach Virginia from there.
It's close enough to not be a bad guess. The Maryland-Virginia border is at a 45 degree angle, so the distance from Pennsylvania to Virginia really depends on what part of the state.

In any case, all three sites were day trips when I lived in Baltimore. Even Chancellorsville wasn't that far. I can't fault anyone for picking a battle in the general region.

The Potomac is at roughly a 45 degree angle to the Old Line, but West Virginia also comes into play not far from Antietam. Maryland is, as they say, a small state, but there are those who love it enough to know it isn't THAT small.

I have a TD to prove it... :)

MarkBarrett wrote:The champ carousel has been spinning with no repeat champ since the week prior the TOC, making ten champs in ten games. April 2009 had a longer streak, so we'll see what next week brings. Anyone know the record?
The April 2009 streak, with 13 consecutive new champs, has an asterisk: Priscilla Ball, #9 in the order, was returning after she had been unable to defend in a previous session due to illness. This one started on a Monday, like the current streak (3xer Ryan Alley finished in the negative on 11/3/14).

Starting with Fred Beukuma's fourth game on 3/30/09:
Spoiler
  1. Anne Reilly
  2. Heather Menzel
  3. Daniel Stauss
  4. Diane Wilshere
  5. Kevin Rainforth
  6. Eric LaForest
  7. Becky Anderson
  8. Jeff Mangum
  9. Priscilla Ball*
  10. James Holst
  11. Michael O'Malley
  12. Marc Sacks
  13. Kevin Joyce (3x)
Beyond the current streak, I see two other streaks of 10 consecutive new champs.

Starting with Joanne Platt's third game, 9/20/07 (Thursday):
Spoiler
  1. Ann Gavaghan
  2. Donal Coomey
  3. Sara Price
  4. Elizabeth McKenna
  5. Kirk Jordan
  6. Kevin Martin
  7. Richard Johnson
  8. Sharon Lin
  9. Brett Chandler
  10. Todd Butler (2x)
The streak starting with Erin Zwiener's fourth game, 9/26/12 (Wednesday), had a notable ending:
Spoiler
  1. David Schuman
  2. Mike Malaier
  3. Erica Mines
  4. Brendan DuBois
  5. Joanna Mang
  6. Sara Lehmann
  7. Erik Dresner
  8. Brendan O'Connor
  9. Mike Lonesky
  10. Stephanie Jass (7x)
More interesting might be: what's the longest streak without a 3x, 4x, 5x champ? I'll get on it…

Ah, that's great, thanks – J! Archive is missing the first four games. (I subsequently narrowed my hunt to the post-KJ era to account for those holes.)

thenextofken wrote: Would TPTB have accepted just "Tijuana Brass," or did you have to get Herb Alpert's name in there as well? If so, guess I didn't quite "Rise" to the occassion. :D Yes, yes I know, that "number" was done without his famous band, or at least wasn't credited to them.
I think it could be argued both ways. There really never was a "Tijuana Brass." Herb Alpert did the first album solo credited as "Herb Alpert's Tijuana Brass," referring to the style rather than a band. After the first albums were successful, Alpert put together a band, but it was always clear they were subordinates. All of the albums mentioned were credited to "Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass." "Rise" came more than five years after Alpert emanciptated the Tijuana Brass.

On the other hand, some of the later albums featured the initials TJB, and anyway, it's Jeopardy, so would they BMS "The Supremes" to get "Diana Ross & the Supremes" or "The Miracles" to get "Smokey Robinson & the Miracles" or "The Harmonicats" to get "Jerry Murad's Harmonicats"? I don't think they would. So I think an answer of TJB would draw a "we'll accept that" from AT. (However, I think a response of "The Royal Canadians" would draw a BMS on a question going for Guy Lombardo as would a response of "The Revolution" going for Prince.)
I'd rather cuddle then have sex. If you're into grammar, you'll understand.

I found the longest stretches without 3-, 4-, 5-, and 6-game champs in the post-Jennings era and put them here.

Fun fact: there were no mega-champs for nearly two years, between Kevin Marshall and Dan Pawson.

DId anyone else have Fredericksburg for FJ? It was the first battle that I could place in northern Virginia; it's only 50 miles from Arlington. A pretty lousy FJ clue, I have to say - it's an uninteresting fact about the cemetary, there's no "aha" in the TOM, and the answer isn't clear if you don't know where certain towns in Virginia are to within 20 miles (or Maryland, to within 40).

First Bull Run/Manassas was the first major battle after Fort Sumter. As has been mentioned, loyalist came from DC to have a picnic and ran home realizing the war would not be over in a few weeks. So it's pretty famous. The battles of Fredericksburg didn't take place until after Antietam and just before Gettysburg.

As a local, I overthinked this one at first and thought of Bladensburg from the War of 1812, until I realized that the whole point of Arlington National Cemetery was to seize Robert E. Lee's estate as punishment for rebelling. They wouldn't have held onto a body for that long.

I can think of a lot worse punishments for treason and making war on your own countrymen than having one of your estates confiscated. Having said estate turned into a resting place for those who served that country has a poetic and appropriate quality.

I think Lee would have been proud his land is used as a way to honor our greatest soldiers.

Maybe so. Or maybe not. His loyalty to Virginia famously outweighed his loyalty to the U.S. Army when he turned down Lincoln's offer of command.

And he might rather have had a choice in the matter, as opposed to having his (or more precisely, his wife's family's) land confiscated.

Not that I mean to stick up for Lee too much. He's a very interesting figure in American history, but he made a considered choice to be on the wrong side of history.

I think that the writers were intending for you to remember that First Bull Run was the first major battle of the Civil War, but yeah, even if you realized that it is still hard to determine if that is supposed to be a TOM. I do think that it is an interesting fact, but it isn't a great clue mainly because there were so many other battles in that area and it's hard to determine which one would best fit the "30 miles" parameter. It's far from the worst clue that the show has had, but it's not a great one, either.

"30 miles parameter?" Where'd that come from?

Sure, there's lots of other battlefields in the area, but none other within walking distance.

This clue isn't asking "what battle took place within an hour's drive of DC" this question is asking "what battle took place on DC's (Arlington's) doorstep." In the 1860s, no one's going to drag hundreds of bodies around for miles to bury them; they're going to find the closest available spot and bury them there.
The best thing that Neil Armstrong ever did, was to let us all imagine we were him.

"Thirty miles" was part of the clue, was it not?

Is it possible that you're underestimating the distance between the two locations, Volante? I surely wouldn't want to walk from Arlington to Manassas--although I have been in traffic on I-66 that made me briefly consider it.

I was hung up on the factoid that the first and last battles of the Civil War ended at the same guys property (he moved after ge first battle wrecked his farm) and said Appomatox :(

Judges: "geomagnetic poles" ok for magnetic poles? (Note: I don't have my notes with me so the terms may be reversed)

I'd heard the picnic fact too, but i heard it under the mention that apparently a 19th century pastime was sitting in a field and watching a war, so it wasnt just an anticipacion of a short war, I thought it was just what people did.

The two are not the same thing, so probably not.
