*Before I reveal more, I require assistance. Can someone please find me how large the Getty Museum is (square feet of gallery space)? I tried to find it and failed :( I actually called the Getty and asked the guest relations person. She said, "I don't know. Check the website. Nobody's ever asked that kind of question before". So helpful :o

According to this page from the Getty website, the main facility is 105,500 square feet, with the Getty Villa campus adding another 76,000 square feet "nearly doubling" its size.

105,500 + (76,000 • 2) = 257,500 square feet, roughly estimated.

You don't need to double the 76,000. It's simply 105,500 + 76,000 = 181,500. Yours would more-than-double-it, not "nearly double it".

The 76,000 was an added to the original Getty Mansion (now Villa) campus, unrelated to the newer Getty Center campus. (At least that's how I read the passage.)

Sure to cause chaos! (Please have mercy, I created the TD at the last minute to fill in for someone so not everything was thoroughly vetted). This one really played much more difficult than I expected. Many wrong answers. :(

I understand you did this at the last minute, but this question might be a good lesson to future TD hosts. If a question is difficult to research such as this one, it is probably best to leave it on the cutting room floor.

Again, this is not a criticism of our host, but just a general comment about TDs in general. I thought the question was fine but you seemed to have some roadblocks in finding the size of at least one museum.

Another aspect of this question is that it asks for information not commonly mentioned with regard to museums, leading to many negs on "reasonable" choices. I put together a short list of museums that I was confident were correct (Louvre, Hermitage, Met, Art Institute and British Museum) but was less sure of several others (Orsay, V&A, Prado, Rijksmeseum) despite having visited all of them. Even the maps don't usually make a point of mentioning scale.

I'll add a related, and more general, comment about TD questions based on my experience. One of the questions on my "Lion Country" TD asked for one of the NYSE- or NASDAQ-traded companies with the largest market cap (# of shares outstanding x share price).

After the first 20 or so entries came in, I decided to drop the question because more than half the answers were incorrect. Almost all of those answers were reasonable.

What I learned from this: When hosting a general-knowledge TD, make sure you're asking for something that is generally known.

From poking around, I'd still say that the Prado should be right (though I'm not making a real fuss about it). The Wiki entry for largest museums has its square footage at 166k, but other sources (Britannica) indicated that a 235k sq ft addition was completed in 2007, which would put it over 400k sq ft, which would be well within the Top 14.
I'm living proof to show that a good attitude, a Southern accent, a ridiculous beard, and a middling amount of trivia knowledge can get you onto Jeopardy!
