That was one brutal DJ round, for the 3 contestants, as well as myself. For a while there near the end it looked like it was going to end up being a battle of attrition, seeing which contestant could give the fewest incorrect responses. Damian went from having a big lead, to seeing both opponents have a chance to pull closer or ahead of him with a DD, back to a big lead, then suddenly he held a lock game for a few clues after misses by Ian, then Ian pulled back within half of Damian's score, and finally came the last clue of the round, Sweet Spots for $2,000, which could have given Damian the lock, but instead Judy got it right, leaving all 3 players with a chance to win in FJ.

I suspect that FJ would be a lot easier to us watching the show today than it was to these players back in February, as there is a movie coming out soon featuring the character in question, and I have just started seeing a lot of commercials for it on television.

I also had a bad DJ round. I wasn't a big fan of the boards the last two nights.

FJ was an instant get. Captain America and the Avengers was one of my favorite video games when I was a kid. But I usually used Iron Man as my fighter :)

FJ was an instaget. It helped that I've seen the trailer for the upcoming movie.

I totally would have named my son "Harvard" or "Stanford" or something like that.

How the heck can the Santa Monica pier be in Long Beach??? There were some strange answers at the end there ...

And congrats on win #2, Damian!

Changed my answer from Superman to Capt. America about halfway through. Just made more sense.

I went the wrong way on FJ. Knew it wasn't Supes or Bats (they were late 30s); was wondering if it might be the first issue of "Superman" Comics (as opposed to Action Comics, which is where Kal-El first appeared).

I went with Captain Marvel instead.

Of course, when I saw the correct answer, I said [bleep] instead of "Shazam!" Painfully obvious.

Hey, it's Ian from the 7/12 game. That WAS a brutal DJ board, definitely not the Cliff Clavin dream board, but at least it got all of us. It's funny how little I remember of the categories from the taping: the only ones I could recall before watching were Sound of Music and Hunter S. Thompson, and my Waterloo, the travels of Marco Polo. Watching that DD, it was like the moment when Lisa Simpson tells everyone on TV that Ralph is not her boyfriend, and Bart pauses it to "actually hear Ralph's heart breaking". Ouch.
I do have to thank my time living in the Midwest for my familiarity with those delicious, delicious Whoopie Pies, which saved my shot at a win. And of course, the Captain America question seems so timely now, but in March, who knew?
And no, I don't know how the SM Pier could be in Long Beach.
Great job Damien - let's go for three!

Welcome Ian. The Silk Road DD would have moved you up to (still not enough) 11,200. I was curious about the Hormuz clue? Would you have known that one the first time you met Alex?

16/30 for me in the DJ round, so I agree it was a tough one.

The FJ clue was one where I was not going to let the year get me this time. Without putting anything on paper I was at first working with Superman and Action Comics #1. I did not know the year of the debuts, but I was 95% on the certainty scale it was in the '30s. With the internal debate and rereading the clue to understand what was wanted I realized I needed the character name.

Even if I had not seen the trailer for the Captain America movie when I saw Super 8 last month I think I would have taken Hitler for a patriotic route to get the correct response. I can't be sure because tonight I did recall Tommy Lee Jones mentioning Hitler in the trailer.

Trailers are supposed to make viewers want to see the movie and that one did not. In case Captain America comes up again what should I add to the trivia bank?

Steve Rogers
James "Bucky" Barnes
Red Skull
Mighty Shield
Avengers

That's all I know. I was never much of a comic book guy.

That covers most of it. I might throw in:
a Simon/Kirby work
S.H.I.E.L.D.
supposedly assassinated

I would have gone with "Hey", but then, I'm like that. :) (I remember when I was a teenager I thought it would be cool for me to name my son Mark Alan Robert Kendall or Jack Andrew Clinton Kendall or something like that (if you haven't figured out why yet, you will, just give it time). Fortunately, when I actually did have children, I had a level headed person (ie my wife) there also picking names.)

As to the Captain America movie, am I the only boardie who didn't even know there was such a thing? Yes, I am Canadian, but I do watch American TV (sometimes even with American ads), and we basically get the same movies as you do, I don't see why they wouldn't release Captain America here, even though he's not a Canadian comic book hero like Johnny Canuck or Superman. (Yup, Superman was created by a Canadian!) That being said, however, despite having no knowledge of the upcoming movie, I still got the clue, ruling out Superman and Batman for the time period and the stand-alone part, and thinking 1941 (a patriotic year in recent American history) would fit with a Captain America introduction, he made the most sense given all the parts of the clue.

Yes, after the reveal, I was wondering if Alex was going to toss in a paid promotional mention about the upcoming movie. Actually, I had no clue on FJ - never was much of a comic book guy.

Surprised Hormuz was a TS. The Strait of Hormuz is a fairly well-known geographic feature, and it even comes up in the news on occasion.

My sisters used to torture me with incessant repeated viewings of The Sound of Music shortly after we got our first VCR, so the Favorite Things category was an easy sweep for me.

FJ = instaget. Hitler and 1941 were givens. I'm not sure how the year would have caused difficulty here as Alex mentioned.

Double Jeopardy = tough as hell. Ian, good job preventing a runaway with Damian there. Also sweet pic of you and Alex.

Easy Jeopardy round, especially with small words. I would've loved it if Wee had a mention of what else the word means ;)

Superman debuted in 1938. It's a gimme if you know that Steve Rogers volunteered for the Super Soldier project early in the war effort, but I think most casual comic book fans are relatively unaware of Captain America's origins, and simply associate the character with his iconic costume and shield.

FJ! was an instaget for me, and I ran the "My Favorite Things" category (it's my wife's favorite movie and I've seen it a lot). That Hormuz was a TS wasn't as surprising as the guesses - Gibralter? Messina? Neither is even remotely close.

For Whoopie Pies I said Moon Pies, which aren't the same thing at all.

Hello, Ian! Good to see you here.
Not quite as well played as the previous game, but at least we cleared the board for the second day in a row. Some game thoughts:
- Strait of Hormuz: I alluded to problems I had with video clues in yesterday’s game thread, and it happened again tonight. I glanced at the video, then decided to focus on the written clue. Bad move. Had I just focused on the video, this could have been a charade clue – I wouldn’t have needed anything else besides seeing what Kelly was pointing at on the map. Instead, I was reading the words and was confused when I saw that it was truncated with “…” because it was so long. So part of the question was missing, I didn’t really know what they’re asking, and unwisely tried to piece Italy, a strait, and a city with same name together with a mess of an answer. Ugh.
- After that, I decided to set the confidence interval bar really high before trying to buzz in (e.g. rhino, Queen Mary)
- I was only 50/50 on salt water taffy, but realizing I could have a lock, I was trying like heck to buzz in, but once again got beat by Judy
- I had a much tougher time ringing in than the previous game. I think it’s actually an advantage to be at the middle podium, where I was the game before, because you have a better sense of what both opponents are doing. I remember being surprised a few times to be beaten by Judy
- FJ: comic books would be near the bottom of the list in terms of categories I want to see. As someone pointed out, this would be a much easier question now with the movie coming out than 4 months ago.

Having to leave my wife and six-month-old at home, I was happy I got to mention my son’s name on the show, but disappointed that I couldn’t goad Alex into saying F. Yu on national TV. 7/12 is my father’s birthday, and as much as I wanted to write a birthday message on my screen, I didn’t want to tempt fate and offend the Jeopardy gods.
Let’s do it again today!

Ian, I meant no offense. I know how it can be up there. It was more of an "Augh! Get it!" that made me shake my head on that one. Hopefully the experience was great even without the win.

And let's do it again tonight, Damian!

I had weird taping deja-vu tonight. When I taped in February, I played in Tuesday's 4th and 5th games and lost the 5th, so my Wednesday was free. My husband and brother and I rented a car and played tourist. My brother wanted to see Venice Beach ( and holy medical marijuana places every 50 feet, batman!), and then we drove down to the Queen Mary. And I got ice cream at the place mentioned in the clue. That clue came up, and I had to pause the DVR til I stopped laughing.

Got FJ - I'm not a comic book person, and haven't really seen any movies lately, but it made sense for Capt. America to be punching Hitler. My hubby got Hormuz and Lilliputian faster than I would have, and we were bummed that the Silk Road was a triple stumper. My Favorite Things was way easy (maybe they should have had that on Kids Week)
I had a much tougher time ringing in than the previous game. I think it’s actually an advantage to be at the middle podium, where I was the game before, because you have a better sense of what both opponents are doing. I remember being surprised a few times to be beaten by Judy
Damian - I totally agree with you on this. My first game I had the middle podium, and had excellent buzzer mojo. When I got to the champions podium, it never felt as good and I never got into the same rhythm. Best of retroactive luck tonight!

Just in case you're interested, here's the cover of Captain America #1:

Image

And I'll concur with what others have said - the video clues are tough on contestants, especially if the category is the rightmost on the game board (the video part appears on a screen to the left of the game board). On the first round of my second game, it involved equestrian statues; one I got off beam by going back and forth between the picture and verbage, and missed an important part, rang in and gave a non sequitur answer; the next involved a statue of Teddy Roosevelt, which I didn't recognize on stage [just looked like any guy on horseback] but was obvious as heck at home; and the third I got right only from the clue [Spanish dude from 11th century on horseback; way too early for Quixote, has to be El Cid]. I think the other two were triple stumpers.
