Re: Wednesday, September 21, 2011 Game Recap & Disc (SPOILER
Jeopardy Round: 21/29. I love the Ken Jennings reference. That had me bursting out laughing. Also I need to add, Teenage has 3 Es, but I understand why Justin was negged, since he added Years. Overall, couldn't sweep, everything, best was 3 sets of 4, and a couple of 3s, meaning 21/29 revealed. That was an abrupt finish though.
Double Jeopardy: 22/30 It took 20 minutes to get a sweep, but I did. 5/5'd the Money Best Places . Hell I know where Solon, Ohio is, that very much was like, thank you, make my life easier. (If anyone cars, Solon OH had a station on the Erie Railroad's Mahoning Division branch to Cleveland). I 4/5'd the US-biased Rebellion Category, getting the easy Boxer one.
Final: Oscars and Movies are not my thing. My dad got it, he couldn't remember the name until he asked me who played Mr. Sir on Holes, John Voight. Justin however, decided the Faith Love strategy was a smart decision. Not sure I agree with that wager. It worked out, but that was a ballsy wager.
General thoughts: Justin seemed to struggle a lot today. Glad he got the 2nd Daily Double, desperately needed. However, one argument to his struggling in Season 28 compared to him in Season 27 is that he was a season transplant. Hell Dan Melia struggled in game 4 of his 5-day run. Great to see another 5-timer. Let's hope Justin makes it 6 or more.

To be fair, though, it's probably what I would have wagered in the same position. As soon as I saw the category, I knew I would be getting my first miss of the new season. Given an infinite amount of guesses, I probably wouldn't have gotten it, mostly due to not knowing that Jon Voigt was Angelina Jolie's father.

Well, arguably he could've given the game away, but that's for time to say now. I already have my first miss of the year, blanking on Henry David Thoreau when I clearly know who they meanecongator wrote:That's one word for it.Roadgeek Adam wrote:It worked out, but that was a ballsy wager.

Re: Wednesday, September 21, 2011 Game Recap & Disc (SPOILER
I don't think that really qualifies as a Faith Love strategy. I would guess it was more of an "I don't know much about movies, so I'm going to hope that the guy next to me doesn't either and bet nothing" strategy. The logic behind the Faith Love strategy is that there is a reason for the second place player to wager enough to reach the exact total of the 1st place player, so it makes sense for the leader to bet nothing and possibly finish in a tie. It is certainly still a gamble, as the leader making the $0 wager is still counting on the 2nd place player to make the logical wager.Roadgeek Adam wrote: Justin however, decided the Faith Love strategy was a smart decision. Not sure I agree with that wager. It worked out, but that was a ballsy wager.
In this case, Justin should have been virtually guaranteed to lose if he made the usual shutout bet and answered FJ incorrectly, so if he didn't think the Oscar category was one he was likely to get correct, it could be argued that he made a smart play in betting $0, as at least in that case Patrick has to get the right answer to win, and Beth has no chance to catch Justin.
Patrick made an extremely poor wager, and I have no idea what he was thinking, because he was in just about the most enviable position a 2nd place player can be in, since he could have bet up to $2,999 and won if Justin made the usual wager and missed, since Beth in 3rd place couldn't have caught him. Granted, it didn't end up mattering because of Justin's wager, but that may have been the most illogical wager we've seen this week, and there have been some doozies.

That will explain what we're talking about, in case anyone is a little confused.

I am compelled to point out that Louisville, Colorado is correctly pronounced "Lew-iss-ville", not like the way Alex pronounced it (and the one in Kentucky). My daughter would not allow me to let this go by without commenting on it since we've eaten dinner there.

Paul Kursky can't be happy with tonight's result. He had a good chance to avoid the 8x, 6x, and high scoring 5x champs for his first game in the TOC. Now he could face any of the biggies.
Justin did nothing special tonight (how can you win 5 and not know Eliot's Floss?),but he got the victory. Patrick will be stuck with Jolie this and that for the rest of the life.
I got caught on a couple of clues tonight. Lighters sounded good to me trying to figure out the match book collecting. On the Revere/Massachusetts clue I bit on Norfolk to blurt out Virginia.
Last night I missed the sports area clue for FJ. It would have been a double dagger to then miss an Oscars the following night. This time I had the correct response coming home with no interuptions.
How many wise guys joined me and said moths instead of butterflies for the lepidopterist?

It probably doesn't help that she's not a terribly recent winner - she won for Girl, Interrupted in 2000. Neither she nor her brother use their given last name professionally.econgator wrote:That's one word for it.Roadgeek Adam wrote:It worked out, but that was a ballsy wager.

Re: Wednesday, September 21, 2011 Game Recap & Disc (SPOILER
First off, I'll start with my first requests of the judges for the new season:
"WELCOME" $1000 (btw, why couldn't anyone use that as the shorthand for the cat?): "All Saint's Day" acceptable for "Day of the Dead"?
"E3" $800 (to refresh your memory, that's the infamous clusterbumble in that round): Would "adolescence" (without the "years" following) be acceptable? It does have three Es ... (And Alex's comment of "we were looking for three Es, not four" hopefully will clarify things for those who insist that a four E response is acceptable because it does have three Es (as well as another one))
A couple of things that bugged me about this ep:
While Ken is very witty, and I love his style and sense of humour, "I, for one, welcome our new computer overlords" isn't quite his line. It originates from (or at least, was made famous by) a Simpsons episode (original quote "I, for one, welcome our new insect overlords") and, as the Internet is wont to do, made it into a meme and drove it into the ground. (See the Language Log link on the phrase). He may have been the first person to use the word "computer" in there (at least, famously), but it's not original humour.
And Beth didn't try "White Rabbit" when March Hare was negged? That's definitely a golden ticket to ring in right there! (Another yell-at-the-screen moment here)
FJ was almost an insta-, despite my poor knowledge in that type of category normally (case in point, blanked on Paul Newman's name and said Rock Hudson earlier in the game). Took me a few seconds to come up with Jolie's name because all I could see was her face, and then I got, ummm, distracted.)

I'm going to say no for being too specific; while festivities do take place on November 1, the real Día de los Muertos is on All Souls' Day a day later.dhkendall wrote: "WELCOME" $1000 (btw, why couldn't anyone use that as the shorthand for the cat?): "All Saint's Day" acceptable for "Day of the Dead"?

I yelled at the TV when Justin's wager was revealed -- in surprise rather than anger, really. He was in a position where a zero wager makes some sense: if Patrick had wagered to keep Beth locked out, Justin's wager would have guaranteed him victory in all possible outcomes. As it was, he still would have won on a triple stumper or a sole get by Beth. Not a wager I would have made (hell, it killed me to wager $0 when I was 100% sure it was the wager I should make), but I can't hold it against him too bad.
I figured out Angelina Jolie right away from the description of her role, and just leapfrogged from that to Jon Voight (there's an H in his last name; is there one in his first?).

Oops, I had Voight misspelled in my post above, but there is indeed no "h" in his first name. If anyone ever has trouble remembering that, just recall the Seinfeld episode where George buys John Voight's car, (a LeBaron, I believe) and remember that the actor spells it Jon but periodontist spells it John.seaborgium wrote:I figured out Angelina Jolie right away from the description of her role, and just leapfrogged from that to Jon Voight (there's an H in his last name; is there one in his first?).

I also couldn't decide if it was ballsy or just plain lucky. I've always believed that the second worst wagering mistake (after only the Clavin) you can make is when you have the lead going into FJ, answer correctly, and lose because you didn't wager enough for whatever reason and were overtaken by a trailer. Justin's wager put him into a position for exactly that to happen and he's lucky Patrick didn't beat him.Roadgeek Adam wrote:

In the same vein I've never understood why the "Faith Love Strategy" is even considered a strategy. It always feels like the equivalent of rolling up into a ball at the end of the game and hoping that no one hurts you. I know, it looks clever when it works out (as in this game) but the risk of disaster makes it look most unwise to me.
I also don't know why "teenage years" would be negged. It does contain "3 Es" so it fits the category. I know we've had this discussion before. It didn't say "exactly 3 Es" so why would the 4th one make it incorrect? Perhaps I don't remember the exact wording of the clue, so it was appropriate for this answer to be negged on some other grounds.
I for one answered "preteen." Judges?
When I saw the "Top 40" category I mentally marked myself down for the usual 0/5, then got a pleasant surprise when there was one "old guy" clue and I remembered Cher doing "Half-Breed" for $1K. Woo-hoo!
I know I have to study celebrities a little more if/when I get on. When I saw FJ I couldn't remember the movie references at all but from some far distant corner of my mind I was able to dredge up Jon Voigt. Then I sat there for 20 seconds trying to remember who his acting daughter is. Of course at the reveal I remembered having read Jon-Angelina somewhere, but it's just not the sort of thing that sticks in my mind. Not like taxonomic suffices, say....
Justin is having the kind of week most of us can only dream of. Congrats and much retroactive good luck. I always enjoy watching a high-quality, successful run like this.

As for FJ I'm surprised that I got it right in one - Voight and Jolie were the first names that popped into my head.
