Re: Happy Birthday to J!Board

Happy birthday! And a continued thanks to everyone who keeps this place running.

It's hard to believe that the amount of time that this board has existed is greater than the amount of time that I was on the old Sony board. Time flies.

Re: Poll on Boardies Covid-19 Impact

I didn't check either of the first 2 boxes. I came down with what I thought was a cold back in February, 4 or 5 days after I had been to a concert. There had not been any reported Covid cases in the U.S. at the time, and I never even considered it, but I guess it could have been Covid. I have been h...

Re: Learned League 85 - Official Thread

Congrats to boson!

I ended the season with a forfeit win and finished in 9th place in my rundle. I think that I was kind of lucky, as my MPD to end the season was -8.

Re: Learned League 85 - Official Thread

I won 3(3)-1(1) yesterday. My opponent was located in Canada and was educated there, so I thought that 0 was the easy call for the lakes question. But they missed it. I never even thought of the Great Salt Lake. My other two gets were Wallace and Nike. I got as close as "Panthesela" for the question...

Re: Learned League 85 - Official Thread

Count me as another one who was helped by the existence of Vijay Singh in getting the India question. I got my first tie of the season--4(3)-4(3). Giving my opponent a 3 for "ollie" was a bad call. I came up with "beach sunrise" for the potent potable clue. I thought that I had a decent shot! I am c...

Re: Learned League 85 - Official Thread

I somehow have 4 straight wins during this stretch of tough questions, but yesterday was a little bit better for me as I had 4 correct. And I had Ford under consideration, and AARP was a forehead slapper. I still haven't gotten around to watching Joker, but I am another one who was thrown by "contro...

Re: Learned League 85 - Official Thread

I lucked into a 2(2)-1(2) win, and got myself out of the relegation zone at least temporarily. I know exactly 3 types of edible mushrooms: shitake, portobello, and chanterelle. I would have thought for sure that "chanterelle" was a French word, but it was the only one of the three that could have po...

Re: Learned League 85 - Official Thread

I lucked into a 4(2)-3(2) win, but I had a bad RTFQ moment by guessing the Juan de Fuca Strait for the Mason-Dixon line. I also have always kind of had a bad habit of confusing east from west

Re: Learned League 85 - Official Thread

Another 0(0) for me. I originally had India and Pakistan but switched to India and Bangladesh. And I totally misinterpreted the music school question as asking for a particular style, and guessed Baroque.

Re: Learned League 85 - Official Thread

Yesterday was my first 0(0) since LL82. I thought of Judas Priest for the band and knew that it was a group that Beavis and Butt-Head liked, but I seemed to remember that there was a question on Judas Priest not too long ago and guessed Iron Maiden. I had heard the term median lethal dose when talki...

Re: Learned League 85 - Official Thread

I won, but picking action painting over abstract expressionism cost me a beer. I should have paid closer attention to the wording and realized that the more formal sounding term fit better.

Re: Learned League 85 - Official Thread

I have never been to Philadelphia but I have watched enough travel channel-type shows to recognize the name Pat's. I knew that Pat's and Geno's are 2 cheesesteak shops that are located right across the street from each other in Philadelphia. I really want to try at least one of them someday! But I w...

Re: Learned League 85 - Official Thread

I lucked into a 6(3)-5(3) win. Current events are my worst category but I was fully expecting a question on the murder hornets this season. Current Events were my opponent's 5th best category, I gave them a 0, and they missed it. I got the question on the athletes, but I was confused as to why those...

Re: Learned League 85 - Official Thread

I had another 1-point loss yesterday. The wrong side of the coin coming up for me between the sun/the moon and Mars/Venus cost me a tie.

I also wouldn't have guessed that Joan of Arc would play so much easier than Jacobean.

Re: Learned League 85 - Official Thread

I took a 1 point loss yesterday. I had an outside shot at drinking a beer, but I switched from Hull to Orr (I know very little about hockey) and considered Westminster but went with Piccadilly. I know that it was a pretty easy set but I am surprised that Westminster didn't play easier, as I thought ...

This is very sad to hear. I never met her, but it was a joy to see her compete in the three super tournaments that she was invited to. May she RIP.

Re: Learned League 84

Seeing Ike Barinholtz and Dave Weigel on Millionaire and thinly hiding their LL association, I was wondering (besides Mick Mulvaney) who the other "famous" (not Jeopardy types) people in LL. I think a few others have been mentioned in the past, but I can't remember who they are. MazinC appears to b...
