Re: Tuesday, April 14, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

That said, "congruent number" does have its own Wikipedia article (and one on Wolfram, which is more solid), so it is indeed "a thing", in all likelihood. And, like so many number theory concepts, it's fairly easy to explain, but can open up a very complex rabbit hole. It of cou...

Re: Tuesday, April 14, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Two things I didn’t understand from tonight’s show. First, the definition of congruent they gave for the area of the 3-4-5 triangle. I got the right answer, given what they said... but I don’t get what it means. And googling the definition of ‘congruent’, I didn’t see anything that appeared to match...

Re: Online Test Recap & Discussion (Pacific), January 30, 2020

Still in the pool for another nine months, so just took the tests off YouTube (thanks, sherder!). In order, posted 45, 42, and 39. But I had a few rum and cokes before that last test, so I think think I missed a few I would have normally gotten... Indigo, Aristotle, The Crown, and Tootsie. For me, t...

Re: Friday, December 27, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

"One of Powell's Indiespensable Book Club selections was George Saunders' "Lincoln" in this purgatory-like state" According to the powells.com website, that is indeed how they spell the name of their book club. Thanks for pointing that out... I’m afraid I need to do more researc...

Re: Friday, December 27, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I thought there were two rather sloppy mistakes on today’s show. First, they had the misspelling ‘INDIESPENSABLE’ in one of the clues. Then in the -TED category, Alex said the correct answer would not have the letters T, E, D. The first answer turned up was ‘ten’, from ‘tented’. Alex’s explanation n...

and I just looked it up....’real’ is two syllables, which I thought rhymed with ‘deal’. And ‘reel’ is one syllable, which I pronounce the same as ‘real’. So I guess I just don’t understand syllables

Re: Tuesday, November 26, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Although I got FJ right, I too have always pronounced ‘deal’ as a two syllable word... maybe it’s a Midwestern thing. But when Alex gave the answer, it sure sounded like two syllables as well... at least to my ears.

Re: Monday, October 21, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I got it after about 15 seconds, but probably only because I live in Colorado. I agree the 'ore' designation made it more difficult, as I went at it from that angle, and Galena was the only city I could think of named for an ore. (Bauxite, Cinnabar?!?). When I finally focused on the 10,000+ feet, th...

Re: Thursday, June 6, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

For Final Jeopardy, I was torn between Pete Seeger and Woody Guthrie (and chose the wrong one, of course). Other than knowing the actual quote, is there anything that would lead toward one rather than the other? Steinbeck to Grapes of Wrath, to dust bowl, to Guthrie. Thanks... that makes sense. Now...

Re: Thursday, May 23, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I'll go on record as saying Nate's DD bet was just about right. He was dominating on the buzzer and a nice built up lead from SJ. A potentially hard (it was very hard IMHO) 2K question. If he misses it, he still has a pathway to reach FJ with a lead. 50/50 odds that someone else finds the DD3, and ...

Re: Jeopardy 2019 North American Audition Tour

Anyone for the Denver audition receive actual info regarding the location? I confirmed to the original email but have not heard anything back and haven’t gotten a reply to my other email I sent  I received my Denver invitation on 4/23, replied to it on 4/24, and received the audition info on...

Re: Monday, December 31, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I believe there was a ‘bad’ question today. ‘In math, when the number of elements in a set is countable, it’s this type of set’. The answer accepted was ‘finite’. A countable set can be either finite or infinite. And some use the term ‘countable set’ only to refer to an infinite set. (I presume this...
