Re: Monday, October 19, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Has something like "First Lady Truman" always been acceptable? Yes, I know there's only one, but somehow I had the idea that a first name or moniker (such as Lady Bird) has always been required for first ladies.

Re: Thursday, October 15, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I thought of Type A, but couldn't make any connection back to Cannonball, so I went with 'adrenaline junkie'. I don't think it was a very good clue. I actually started with adrenaline junkie but talked myself into switching to Type A (fortunately a short response). I likewise thought it was a lousy...

Re: Tuesday, October 13, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Why the hell was NASA in the clue? What do they have to do with droughts? The short answer is that it's there because NASA did the study. It also indicated that it's a(n) historical study and not a contemporary one. And 70% of the continent combined with 1,000 years of history suggests it's based o...

Re: Monday, September 28, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

My opinion is that the writers are not giving Alex nearly enough "also accept", "BMS", or "do not accept" guidance. I'm guessing that it's partly attributable to a lack of in-person collaboration. This clue should have included: "do not accept Congress, do not accept House of Representatives". Ther...

Re: Monday, September 28, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

If anything, it's an oversight in the question-making room, which may or may not be primarily on Zoom nowadays. And J! work may be significantly more solitary - reading through a stack of clues instead of collaborating. My opinion is that the writers are not giving Alex nearly enough "also accept",...

Re: Tuesday, September 29, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I think Alex was downright wrong to say that he was nowhere near. The source for most people of that name is the song Hiawatha. Yeah. The relevant passage of Longfellow's The Song of Hiawatha is: I agree that Alex's comment was way off base. I knew the response first from the Gordon Lightfoot song ...

Re: Wednesday, September 30, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Oooh, interesting thought this lead me to: What if someone had responded "Who is Roosevelt?" Per J! rules, last name is usually enough, but there are exceptions, and they've explicitly BMSed "Who is Roosevelt?" to differentiate between FDR and Teddy during a regular round. What if someone had writt...

Re: Wednesday, September 30, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

For the V.A.T. clue I heard "add" and the CC agreed. Katrina must have said, "added" or otherwise it's a neg? Or "add" is okay as well? She said "add." "Value added tax" has millions of google hits but "Value add tax" has hundreds of thousands. I clearly heard "add" and am trying to train myself th...

Re: Monday, September 28, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

This is exactly analogous to arguing that John Adams should get a BMS if the correct response is John Quincy Adams. You don't get two bites at the apple in that situation or in this one. Except that another player in this game did get two bites at the apple in another scenario exactly analogous to ...

Re: Monday, September 28, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I felt there was an judging error made today. A clue's correct response should have been "Colorado State". Contestant said "Colorado", and Alex says correct and keeps going. At the time, I was surprised they accepted that, since I knew Colorado State was correct. Later, the judges (eg, Alex) correc...

Re: Season 37 Preemptions

I watch on KSDK. They're apparently showing some very recent repeats in the 12PM time slot (sometimes, it's even the current day's episode) So it turns out that I will be able to catch the 9/18 episode on 9/21. This worked better in theory than in practice. Noon today I got one of Jason. Z's games,...

Re: Tuesday, September 15, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

See, to me, the vowel of "pear" and "air" is the same as the vowel of "bet" or "pen," just with an R finishing it. Are there any syllables with the vowel of "air" in your pronunciation that don't end with R? How about "ham" or "yam"? And those are the same vowels to me as in "hat" and "bat"! Not to...

Re: Tuesday, September 15, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

If they pronounce them differently, how? Do they say "merry" like "mrry", Cleveland Brown style? Because Berry Gordy has never been called Brry Gordy, that I can find. Late to the party, but I pronounce berry (and merry) with the vowel of "bet" or "pen", barry (or marry) with the vowel of "bat" or ...

I liked this one. My thought process was: "Well, I'm not familiar with these pieces, but they're the kind of things that [correct response] would write."

Re: 2020 Current Events Discussion Thread

With all of the Lou Brock tributes don't forget to mock the Cubs for trading him. Brock and St. Louis won the World Series in 1964 while it took a bunch more decades for the Cubs to win one. Seaver, Brock... Let there not be a third MLB great for some time making tribute headlines. Former Mets fan,...

Re: 2020 Current Events Discussion Thread

Maybe this goes here. MLB will be celebrating Jackie Robinson Day on August 28 this year (instead of the customary April 15). I'm still not convinced there'll be a season. Week to go, but positive cases all through the league and states where teams are located...(Texas, Arizona, Florida, Georgia, C...
