Re: 2020 Current Events Discussion Thread

Maybe this goes here. MLB will be celebrating Jackie Robinson Day on August 28 this year (instead of the customary April 15). I'm still not convinced there'll be a season. Week to go, but positive cases all through the league and states where teams are located...(Texas, Arizona, Florida, Georgia, C...

The NFL’s Washington franchise is retiring the “Redskins” team name.
I'll take advantage of one of my last chances to use an old joke:

Why do some people want to change the name of the Washington Redskins?
Spoiler
Because they feel that the term "Washington" is offensive.

Re: Final Jeopardy! Clues

More on the "Landmarks" clue: The height of the Gateway Arch pretty much pins the clue. You could add the year, decade, or century if you were really worried about pinning it - or go on the fly, and see if someone else comes up with a monument that's 630 feet within a reasonable tolerance that also ...

I can't remember if this has come up here before: LANDMARKS This 630-foot-tall landmark is arguably the most famous object in the world whose design is based on the hyperbolic cosine. What is the Gateway Arch? ICONIC TV THEMES The composer of the theme song to this TV series, which premiered on Sept...

Re: Fun with GSN's "Master Minds"

I happened to watch the July 2 rerun of The Chase, and an announcer said something about it being followed by a "brand new Master Minds". My DVR and I had thought that all of the new episodes had already been broadcast. Can anyone shed more light on this? If you look at some earlier posts, the seas...

PSA: This weekend is the Midseason Classic.
At least one player in LL84 who reads this thread missed the Midseason Classic despite my PSA, so I'm bumping for a little additional bandwidth.

Re: Thursday, June 11, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

One interesting note: the contestant coordinator was wearing blue medical-type gloves during the snippet they showed before FJ. But post-FJ involved hand-shaking and mouth-wiping and zero social distancing. What was the tape date here? I don't think this question was answered yet in this thread. If...

Re: Fun with GSN's "Master Minds"

I can easily see "nucular" being accepted orally, but not as a written response to FJ!. I guess my question is: does a common mispronunciation result in the spelling becoming "correct" in a written context? I'd hate to think that the answer is "yes", but I realize that my views are extreme.

Re: Fun with GSN's "Master Minds"

Spoiler for the 6/5 episode, with an opinion solicited: On one question, both a contestant and Jonathan wrote and said "Antartica". This was accepted by Brooke, who correctly said "Antarctica". Would a response of "Antartica" pass muster in FJ! nowadays? My personal opinion is NO, ARE YOU KIDDING ME...

Re: Monday, June 1, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I believe the only time I've seen "phial" was in the Lord of the Rings (phial of Galadriel). In context, I thought "Bronte" would not have been enough, "clerk" was enough, and "Hepburn" should have been BMSed. I knew exactly what FJ! was going for, but my brain wouldn't produce it. "Frederick the Gr...

Re: Learned League 85 - Official Thread

In the before times, I used to walk laps around Walmart when the weather was inclement. There were a few weeks this winter when my path took me by a display of some item (I didn't notice what it was) with the name Jojo Siwa prominently displayed. I had no idea what a Jojo Siwa was, though I eventual...

I am so grateful that The Powers That Be were able to make this happen. I think many people were viewing the state of Alex's health as a reason not to tarry too long before arranging it...little did we know. The matches were a joy to watch, especially since I'm a KJ fangirl. I was telling a friend a...
