Re: Learned League 85 - Official Thread

A hearty congratulations to Boson for his MagA victory, his first ever! Thanks! I made my learned league flag into a car window mounted thing, and I'm driving across town honking my horn. Congrats to the other jboardies who qualified for the championship! It's just nuts that I hung on to finish thi...

Re: Learned League 85 - Official Thread

A very satisfying 5(3)-4(4) victory. I used to work for a company that had 5 of the Whiz Kids. Of course, they weren't the ones who went to Ford, so I couldn't pull that one. I remembered that after I saw the answer. But yeah, I should have gotten that one. Ford was my first instinct and then I fig...

MD17: Sesame Street continues to plague, torment and mock me in everything trivial
Same here. I have an excuse: I was 18 years old when Sesame Street first aired, and we didn't have kids.

Re: Learned League 85 - Official Thread

This is my 16th season and yesterday was (I'm pretty sure) my first 0(0). Is there a term for this? Goose eggs? Something more clever? Ireland was my first choice but I switched, for no good reason, to Spain (got zero for this anyways). Had no clue on the building but was about to wag barn when I o...

Re: Learned League 85 - Official Thread

I answered Skat, not Euchre, for the card game question. When I was a kid, my mom bought me a copy of Hoyle's Rules of Games , and I remembered there being a Right Bower and a Left Bower in Skat. Later in life, I took German, and learned that "bauer" is the German word for farmer. And when I had my ...

Re: Learned League 85 - Official Thread

(I think you were "supposed" to get that question from the American Gothic House, but my brain stopped reading the question before I got that far.) That's the only reason I got it. Never would have guessed Iowa otherwise. I wasn't familiar with any of the sites, but Czech/Slovak and Amana said Midw...

Re: Monday, March 30, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I got schneided on the TV Before & After category, but I did get FJ. Not sure I would have if not for my memory of baseball announcers calling Fred McGriff "the crime dog", border-line nonsensical as that nickname may have been. Chris Berman of ESPN had all kinds of punny nicknames for MLB players....

Re: Learned League 84

And I've gotten many of the season's hardest questions (Beverly Sills, Apu, Naguib Mahfouz) while botching apparent gimmes like Fatboy Slim. It's just never duLL. I was surprised that Fatboy Slim played as easy as he did, since I didn't think that he had been relevant since...1999, or thereabouts. ...

Re: Learned League 84

For the third time this season, I talked myself out of a correct answer. After having written Hoboken in (having rejected Jersey City, Newark and Ft Lee as unlikely) I unwisely decided that Paramus was a more likely name for a musicographer. I went with Bayonne. I grossly overthought the question a...

Re: Learned League 84

My 5th straight tie! I stupidly talked myself out of champagne. I recognized Korbel as a brand name but was not familiar with the slogan and didn't see how "champagne" fit (I guessed "import"). I don't know what it was about seeing champagne as the correct response, but the second that I did I all ...

Re: Learned League 84

I was surprised so many people (47%) got Crossroads . I'd never even heard of that movie and I was actually watching movies in the mid-80s! :D I suppose there's the Robert Johnson angle, too, but blues history doesn't seem like something a lot of people would know. Thought for sure "derby" would be...

Re: Learned League 84

I managed to get a 9(6) yesterday with a couple good guesses on Crossroads (without Brittany Spears) and Ford. Still in last place and still winless. I had to take my kids to see the Britney version. OMG it was beyond awful. The good news is that watching that movie will lop years off your stay in ...

Jack Welch, who was CEO of General Electric from 1981 to 2001, died at age 84. He ranks in the top tier of celebrity CEOs and was hailed as one of the great managers in business history. He was also nicknamed "Neutron Jack" for the amount of downsizing he presided over at GE: https://www.cnbc.com/20...

Re: Learned League 84

A hint steered me wrong on the Friday set. Going through literally all the state capitals, I had Trenton, Atlanta, Little Rock, and Jackson as the likeliest to have a high percentage of black population. Left with just the raw question and the #2 and #3 cities provided, I would have gone Jackson, s...

Re: Learned League 84

Did anyone get tomato based on its being "beloved in Jersey"? I, for the record, did not--didn't get it at all, in fact. I grew up in Jersey. So did my wife, who was from Burlington County and heard the story from her father. Had I whiffed on the tomato question, my E-Z Pass would have been invalid...

Re: Learned League 84

In college, I took a French cinema class with a prof whose coarse, American-accented French was just brutal to hear, so we died whenever he said Pathé Frères . Yeah, I got that one but for the life of me, couldn't recall chenille and went with velours . I did the same thing, and it cost me 3 points...

Pathe was one of those I knew I should know but it had to percolate for a long time before it came to me. Went with movie making.
My answer was "motion pictures", and Thorsten accepted it.

Re: Learned League 84

I had Quaker State because Pennsylvania is the Quaker state. Somewhat off topic, but there's a Pennsylvania-based chain of restaurants called "Quaker Steak and Lube". They've expanded considerably, and I noticed that they now have two locations in South Carolina. I was introduced to their products ...

I said Pennzoil. I was pretty sure they were owned by one of the big oil companies, but hadn’t made the jump from petroleum to other petroleum products like petroleum jelly. Ah well.
I'm old enough to remember singing(!) radio commercials for "Vaseline Petroleum Jelly", which led me to the answer
