Re: Learned League 88 - Feb/Mar '21

I was going to mention this in response to the comments about the American Revolution ML, but it is striking how poor the smiths' grasp on difficulty is. Every smith thinks their 1DS or ML is 'PG-13'.

Edit: Said Lakota instead of Sioux. Judges?
I'd count it.
Absolutely.
I'd say it's a far better answer than 'Sioux'.

Re: Wednesday, April 14, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

My guess of Richard III wasn't as far off as I thought. It comes in at #4, and they likely wouldn't have asked about Coriolanus or Cymbeline (2 and 3). That was my stopping-off point after departing the correct answer, before arriving at R+J (based more on the 'most filmed' part of the clue since I...

Re: Wednesday, April 14, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Well, you can't dispute it based on the length criterion, but I'd be curious what people think about the 'most filmed' part. A quick count on wiki shows 30 adaptations of Hamlet. Well, we all know how it goes with Wikipedia. It wasn't this page, was it ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Willia...

Re: Tuesday, March 30, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Anyone else slightly bothered and thrown off by Battlestar Galactica being abbrev. as BSG and not BG? I've seen it abbreviated that way before. Plus the category didn't specify that anything would be strictly abbreviated to initials. BSG is the correct abbreviation for the new series. Is there some...

Re: Learned League 88 - Feb/Mar '21

Knew I've heard the ISIL alternative name pronounced "dash" but needed to make it five letters, so I went with "daash." Nope. I was happy to see the question, until I hit the five letter requirement. I wrote down Dashe, Dassh, Daash, and went with the Daash. I didn't get a head slap on seeing the a...

Re: Learned League 88 - Feb/Mar '21

I guarantee you it was/would have been an instaget for any Boston sports fan of a certain age, it certainly was for me. Unbelievably, however, when I submitted I somehow conflated Tommy Heinsohn with Havlicek and that's what I typed in. How I could do this I do not know. Both of these Celtic greats...

Re: Learned League 88 - Feb/Mar '21

For the hoops I was nearly certain of the team being the Celtics and pretty sure Larry Bird was one of the guys. I was even more confident that John Havlicek was one and got two points for my Havilcek being accepted. I'd bet the percentage breakdown of correct answers on that one was something like...

Re: Learned League 88 - Feb/Mar '21

I got two points for the Hot Brown question. I fully expected to get a 0 for that. (I prefer it without tomatoes, though.) With UofL referenced right below my name in the profile, I was surprised to get a point for this one (in my regular rundle; got 0 in JBL, which has been playing tougher than A ...

Re: Learned League 88 - Feb/Mar '21

Donaudampfschiffahrtselektrizitätenhauptbetriebswerkbauunterbeamtengesellschaft was an organization (perhaps apocryphal) that existed (or not) in pre-WWI Vienna, Austria, involved in the transportation of cargo and passengers on what river? I didn't recognize it, and because of the part stating it ...

Fun fact: Fordham Dosent Play Sports in the Patriot league Except for Football, They Play in the Atlantic 10. so technically they are in The Patriot league.
I said Fordham out loud at home, but probably would've clammed on the show for this reason.

Re: Learned League 88 - Feb/Mar '21

7/12, and just missed qualifying out of my rundle. I really had no idea Bose-Einstein would play so hard. I thought with two possible correct answers, it would be even easier. In retrospect, though, I doubt many people would answer either Bose or Einstein without knowing both. Overall, the MSC felt ...

I had no idea K-pop was old enough to have a "modern form", went with Ska since there was a resurgence in that time period. 30 years is a long time in pop music, isn't it? Could you see a similar discussion from the mid-90s, referencing the transition from 'rock and roll' to 'rock'? Congratulations...

Re: Thursday, March 11, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

On the 'Le' in 'Le Figaro', isn't that a leading article? My perspective on this is a little biased, because I didn't know the name (or French) well enough to be confident in the article and in particular its spelling. I might've put 'La Figaro' or something. I said onion spires. Judges? Although I ...

How did 70% get the weightlifting?!? I put clean and jerk but did strongly consider deadlift. Couldn’t name the third technique. Maybe people just put the only one they could think of but given the lack of weightlifting coverage on mainstream sports media that is a higher get rate than I would have...

Yeah, just a standard set of polyhedral dice for role playing games. A d4 (tetrahedron), d6 (cube), d8 (octahedron), d12 (dodecahedron), d20 (icosahedron), and two d10s (the ones at the top, with "kites" for faces). d10s are generally labeled with one 0-9, and the other 00-90 so that they can be th...

I still don't know what the game is, but in trying to follow the description of what was listed got lucky as I also considered heptahedron. It's a typical set o...

Re: Learned League 88 - Feb/Mar '21

Township was just one of those things I've picked up about South Africa over the years. Soweto is an abbreviation for "South West Township". That term was front-and-center in the news, Time magazine, etc back in the apartheid era. I would think you'd have to dig a little deeper to read about South ...
