Re: Ties on Jeopardy! RIP

The best reason to offer a tie is to convince the second-place player to go all-in and throw away their chances at a double/triple stumper. Time and time again, we've seen that people in second place are *already* willing to throw that away for no benefit whatsoever, so I'm not sure that's as strong...

Re: Thursday, May 21, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

That FJ clue didn't even read like a FJ clue - it's like it was a rejected $600 clue in some wordplay category that got thrown in at the last second when the real FJ gets thrown out for some reason. If you can identify A Midsummer Night's Dream from a quote and a character's name - as Michelle did l...

I also mused about whether Bush 41 would be acceptable (I'm guessing BMS) and whether "What's in your wallet?" would be acceptable phrasing for FJ! (I think yes).
Same here, or "Bush I" in my case. BMS between father/son feels awkward here, since the clue quoted the son.

Re: Tuesday, April 21, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Could be worse, I thought Percy Jackson was the author. Was anyone else as put off as I was that Andrew basically did everything in his power not to uncover the final DD? After finding the first one, he controlled the board for six consecutive clues on a board with only three realistic locations for...

Re: Friday, April 17, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

All but Oregon in Inventors. That seemed like a clunker of a clue. Bill Bowerman's "pursuit of a better track shoe" led to him co-founding a company called Nike, which is famously tied to the University of Oregon (hence the clue calling him out as a 'university coach'). Spark Notes would have been ...

Re: Wednesday, April 15, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I got Cleveland largely on knowing that it wasn't named for the president, although having read Prisoner of Trebekistan I was also pretty sure that Garfield was buried thereabouts. It wasn't surprising to see the clue go TS. Pretty wild that Xiaoke should get the last wild card and then win her SF ...

Mathematician John Conway, best known for creating The Game of Life "program", passed earlier this week. Thought it might interest some here.

41 if they accept "pirhouette" with the extraneous h. (Google automatically returns hits for the correct spelling, so maybe....) Unlike many of you, I have no trouble remembering the order of Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle. What I do have trouble with is reading comprehension. So I parsed the clue ...

Re: Online Test Recap & Discussion (Pacific), January 30, 2020

Not quite as easy as the first one, but still pretty easy. I blanked on the stupid soccer star, couldn't think of the name until about three questions later. I actually read that exact magazine two hours ago, as I was putting my 4-year-old to bed. Saw the magazine sitting on top of the library's fr...

Re: GOAT Tournament Day 4 (1/14/20) Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Great tournament. I remember commenting that it would be “funny” if James, with his unreal FJ history, would end up losing this thing by missing a FJ. And to lose on Shakespeare, which is the same topic that Emma ended his incredible run on. Also the category that gave Ken his (at the time) single-...

Re: GOAT Tournament Day 3 (1/9/20) Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

James Madison as part of a FJ answer on day two and then the Democratic-Republicans on day three? Come on, writers, lets show a little more range! At the very least, it's hammered home that I really need to brush up on my political history. I matched Ken on the incorrect response to the former FJ. ...

Re: Tuesday, June 4, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I think I thought the English Channel is a bit larger than it is and ended up with Portugal. Might have zeroed in on the right country with another 30 seconds. Liz gave a wrong answer and Alex let her get away with it. If you're thinking of the same clue as I am, isn't it generally acceptable to om...

Re: Monday, June 3, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Holzhauer's bet was a risk, but a ridiculously small one. (A librarian in a category on Shakespeare, of course she is going to trust herself to get it right) Emma betting on a sports gambler's wager and making her knowledge of the category irrelevant, is a much bigger risk. I can't imagine anyone d...

Being this is the first post-Holzhauer game, did Emma or any of the challengers implement any of James' strategies (e.g. aggressive DD/FJ wagering, Forrest Bounce)? Read the 4th post. I am genuinely entertained at the amount of words you waste transcribing an episode that we've all seen, compared t...

The song is much older than that. It's an old camp song that just went viral a few years ago. I remember hearing variations at Bible camp ~20 years ago.
