Re: Contestants for Season 29 TOC

I'll need to WAG as to when the next ToC will be held (November 2012? May 2013?), but otherwise, I should be all set. I think most likely (barring a drought of 3+ timers) it will be in February 2013 with two College champs and one Teachers champ (most likely they'll have the Teachers play their tou...

Re: Contestants for Season 29 TOC

I think that you need to only track contestants with 3+ wins, since if a superchampion reigns for a long time preventing others from winning they'll probably just delay the ToC until they have enough contestants with 3+ wins (remember that since 1998 ToCs have not been on a fixed schedule).

Re: ToC Wildcard Cutoffs

2001 ToC: $2,400 (Lan Djang) $1,599 (Michelle Clum) I can't believe it's taken this long for anyone (including me) to notice, but Lan Djang was actually the third wild card. I've been analyzing each ToC, finding eliminated quarterfinalists who could have moved on with a different wager or a correct...

Re: Friday, November 11, 2011 Game Recap & Discussion (SPOILERS)

I wonder how many scenarios there are in which the 3rd place player is advantaged by allowing an opponent to get the last clue rather than taking it himself. I can only think of one very specific one - a scenario like $17K/$15K/$4K in which player 3 hopes player 2 gets the last $2K clue in order to...

Re: Wednesday, November 9, 2011 Game Recap & Discussion (SPOILERS)

About whether or not alternates have ever played: If I understand correctly (I've never been a contestant) the alternates in the "lesser" tournaments if they don't get to play get a spot in the next tournament of the same type if still eligible; if not they get a spot in the regular games (or if the...

Re: Wednesday, November 9, 2011 Game Recap & Discussion (SPOILERS)

More importantly, how do you know that Tom will bet $0 in the lock-tie situation? Since I think his chances on FJ (assuming that Justin gets it right - otherwise his bet doesn't matter) are much higher than his chances on a tie-break clue, Tom should bet $1 on FJ in such a situation. Therefore, Jus...

Re: Wildcard Cutoffs (2011 ToC spoilers)

Since on this board (unlike the old Sony one) we can edit the titles, I went ahead and updated the lists to include the cutoffs from this ToC and edited the subject to indicate possible spoilers.

TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS - DAY 3 ================================= John Krizel (S26) / Tom Kunzen (S27) / Joon Pahk (S28) ================================================ Besides the fact that I got FJ wrong, Tom and John had win FJ responses, that was fun having champs from all 3 seasons facing eac...

Curious about J! paperwork

Recently I got curious about something: Does anyone have a copy (without your personal information entered of course) of the questionnaire/contract/whatever the paperwork is called that you have to sign before appearing? If so and it wouldn't be too much effort to do so, could you PM me it as a file...

Re: Final Jeopardy wagering theory

In the (A) 14,000 vs (B) 11,000 vs (C) 6,200 situation C has a dilemma: Whether or not B will make a rational wager. If so, his/her only realistic hope of a win is a sole get (which calls for the big bet you described). The wagering calculator in this case assumes that B won't wager as recommended,...

Re: Wildcard Cutoffs

With the ToC quarterfinals starting this Wednesday I'm giving this thread a bump. I'll probably update the applicable lists either the Wednesday or Thursday after the QFs finish airing, unless someone asks me to wait longer to avoid spoilers.

Thought I had: Weekend online tests

Today I got to thinking of an idea for TPTB: Instead of scheduling the online tests in the evening like they currently do, how about holding them on a weekend instead? Advantages for weekend tests: 1. Less time zone constraints. Considering the core area that J! airs spans 6.5 or 7.5 (depending on w...

Re: Tuesday, October 18, 2011 Game Recap & Discussion (SPOIL

As to why the wagering calculator suggests that 1st and 2nd wager for the tie, I think it stems from the fact that cover bets if they both miss will drop them to the same point. Since your opponent may choose to bet for the tie instead, you should do the same so you won't lose by a dollar in that ca...

Name for the "cover and fall to" point

In FJ! wagering strategy since the amount that the leader will fall to if he/she bets to cover and misses is an important threshold for the trailers to consider, I thought that maybe we should come up with a name for that amount. (More specifically since it's usually the "round number" I'll define i...

Re: Friday, October 14, 2011 Game Recap & Discussion (SPOILE

The scores going into Final were: Katie: 12,200 Megan: 12,600 Joe: 18,200 Megan's wager would depend on how she feels about the category. If she feels confident, she should bet $11,801 to cover Katie doubling her score. (The J! Archive calculator says in that case she should just go all in since sh...

Re: Final day FJ wagering suggestions

Thanks Stefan for your analysis. After thinking about it, here's a few things I noticed about two-day-affair wagering: The second day's total is the most critical, since it's the one that can be wagered on in the deciding FJ!. However, the first day's total is still important in that a high total fr...

Re: Friday, September 23, 2011 Game Recap & Discussion(SPOIL

They used to have the TOC every November. The first one was for just Season I, which had exactly 15 five time champs. After that, they drew champs from TOC to TOC. Not sure how or why they got off kilter. I miss it being a regular event instead of them just springing it on you. It was something to ...

Re: Season 28 airdates

Instead of another age- or occupation-based tournament, I thought of another tournament idea: Remember my April Fool's joke from earlier this year about the upcoming ToC being held in England? As a spin-off from that (hosting a J! tourney of Americans in a foreign country) instead of the ToC being o...
