Re: Wednesday, May 22, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
Well said. It ill behooves members of this group, given as how smart they are, to disparage contestants however badly they perform.

Re: Wednesday, May 1, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
Imar was giving a good account of himself in the early goings but I got the distinct impression he stopped trying in the later stages of DJ. I know some contestants make a production of clicking their buzzer, but even given he was quite restrained, it seemed as if he wasn't even bothering to ring in...

Re: j!archive
I find it interesting that you have posted a mere four times in the last year plus, all four posts in threads that you started. If you must know I have pretty much stopped watching this show. I find the judges too nitpicky. Like the lady who got dinged for Stella D'Artois or not saying "arc welding...

Re: Brahman Naman
Here's a review from a former quiz bowl teammate who is also big in the Indian quizzing scene and a pretty fine author. http://www.livemint.com/Sundayapp/rgtEfIid7TuY1HBM99jQZI/The-geeks-who-knew-too-much.html This is a good review. That situation where Naman and his friend find themselves in a Mus...

It's not too bad. To some extent I could identify with them since I was one of them! It has only 1 star on Netflix, but I think it's better than that. Like I said, if you like quizzes you can enjoy the milieu.

Alistair McLean was my (and all my friends') favorite author in our teens followed closely by Desmond Bagley. I can still remember reading Satan Bug on a train journey from Ernakulam to Trivandrum, oh 30+ years ago! But as has been pointed out so many time, just because it's a gimme to me doesn't ma...

Brahman Naman
Brahman Naman is a newly released movie available on NetFlix- only reason I bring it up is that the protagonist and his friends are quizzers on the college circuit and quizzing loosely forms the b/g to the movie (which really is a kind of homage to the 80's sex comedies like Porky's). The movie is i...

Fellow posters, when you say you had "x" correct, does it mean you shouted out (or said under your breath) that many answers before any contestant did?

I didn't go to school in the US- is the FJ question something that you might have encountered in high school? Not exactly phrased that way but if you learn about the Civil war would you have learnt about Missouri not being a part of the war and then used your geography knowledge of the states to kno...

As a desi was shamelessly rooting for Jason...I thought as soon as I saw the final question, here he goes again. I think Alex used the adjective "young" a dozen times in referring to him.

Coryat: $31,000 43 R/3 W DD: 3/3 FJ: Nope LT: veil, ethylene A well-played game by all involved. There's a Seth in the Bible? In fairness, you have to read all the way to Genesis 5 to learn about him. Pretty sure the pepper compound is capsaicin, not capsicum as the closed captioning said. Unfortun...

For the first time in aeons I ran a category, EFF. Effrontery is frequently prefaced with "bare faced"- or maybe only in the Brit novels I devoured as a kid! Alex absolutely embarrassed that poor lady in the middle with his question about whether her parrot could spout obscenities. The cross and the...

Re: Tuesday, June 7, 2016 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
So Alex got excited about the name Malavika being exotic, which I don't have a problem with, except it was the wrong pronunciation. I don't understand why Indians allow their name to be mispronounced, in fact they themselves pronounce it wrong like the girl with the same first name who won the spell...

Perhaps Kaberi, being Bong, pronounced it the authentic Bengali way! I think she did it tongue-in-cheek, knowing it was going to throw the judges into a minor tizzy.hbomb1947 wrote:

Why does the logo on the apple say "TEACHERS TOURNAMENT" with no apostrophe? Shouldn't there be one after the S, TEACHERS' TOURNAMENT?
