Re: How Did Mayim Bialik Do as Host?

To me, she started off promising but seemed to get worse as her tenure went on - the incessant sotto voce chuckling, excessive adding of additional information, clumsy contestant interviews, and just a general “I’m not a game show host, I’m a celebrity!” attitude brought her way down in my estimatio...

Re: Tuesday, June 1, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Never heard “frog hair” in that context. Only prior usage I’ve ever heard is for the fringe surrounding a golf course green - as in “I didn’t quite make the green, but at least I’m in the frog hair and not the rough.” Gettysburg Address - one of the most inspiring and moving bits of American prose e...

Re: Friday, May 28, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I was impressed by Sam's "Gauss" pull and wonder which part of the clue--the face, the unit, the Latin name, or its English translation--led him to the correct response. (I didn't like the unit part of the clue--"magnetism"?--but I feel like we've had enough of the SI this week.) Seemed like a WECI...

Re: How Did Buzzy Cohen Do as Host?

Buzzy ruled! I rank Buzzy in a tie with AR, and both of them just ahead of KJ, with everyone else we’ve seen way behind. My sole reservation on Buzzy is that the ToC is not regular gameplay, and it would be nice to see him in a regular setting before making a decision (I suspect he was being less sp...

Re: J! in the Media

I feel like $1000 is OK, but far to many people still use $500 when it's not even a valid clue dollar amount anymore. Do you know that the picture in your avatar bears a striking resemblance to the white power gesture that started this whole conversation? Yes. Am I cancelled now? What do you hope t...

In the early 70s in Tulsa we had a far more inappropriate name that I refuse to divulge.
Same timeframe, about 120 miles SSW from Tulsa…same for me.

Re: How Did Anderson Cooper Do as Host

A big meh from me, and his inability to get the timing down for responding to a contestant’s answer got really annoying - I got no sense he was improving with experience. Glad he’s done.

Instaget FJ, and I’m of the opinion that “Utah” in the clue was some modest negbait - but one that a J! player should be able to sidestep. Of course, I wasn’t under the lights so what do I know? ;)

Really impressed by Aaron this week.

Thanks for that explanation of the wah pedal, cthulhu. What about wow and whammy? Could the guitarist basically create the wow/flutter effect with periodic pull on the whammy bar (or use of a whammy pedal)? Leo Fender, the founder of Fender Electric Instrument Company (now Fender Musical Instrument...

Re: Thursday, April 15, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I said wow wow. Judges? (guitarist here) Nope. And actually, it’s seldom called a “wah wah” anymore, just “wah” is much more common. George Harrison titled a song “Wah Wah” though. Wikipedia still refers to it as a wah-wah pedal. floridagator may have been thinking of wow , which is pitch variation...

Re: Wednesday, April 14, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

On FJ, was vacillating between Hamlet and King Lear. Knew they were both long, then overthought it and figured Hamlet was negbait. Sigh.

Aaron is doing really well this week - if he continues at this level, he’ll be my favorite guest host so far, edging out Ken.

Reflexively said Animal Farm on FJ, then immediately thought “not American”, and immediately pivoted to OMaM. One of those books I love but find very difficult to read because it’s so damned sad and tragic ( Flowers for Algernon is the same way). Aaron is improving, and has a nice understated feel t...

Colorado for sure generates the biggest hailstones I've ever encountered. The day I drove home after freshman year, hailstones the size of marbles--not enormous, I know, but still the largest I've seen--came pelting down. I don't recall any dents, but they were big enough to hurt if they hit you on...

It helps when you remember the category name; negged FJ with Lindbergh just to write something down. First reveal was a giant “aaarrrrggggghhhhh!” from me. I’m not buying anything from Dr. Mehmet Oz either, and I tend to hold people of his background to a higher standard than, say, journalists so I ...

Never heard of Glaser, and have only been north of the Mason-Dixon Line three times (once to Newark and twice to Boston), but after about 5 seconds, “I heart NY” clicked. I’ve never seen the redone logo though.
