Re: Friday, June 18, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I wonder if different translations render the sentence in different ways. Kafka wrote in German, and I wouldn't think "croaked" is a direct translation. Yes, they do. https://opencuny.org/cunytranslation/active-projects/kafka-translation-exercise/ https://www.kafka-online.info/the-metamorphosis-pag...

The Serengeti gorge stumper brought me right back to 7th grade social studies when I first learned the name. It's been helpful many times over the years since when watching game shows. As soon as I saw the clue, this popped into my mind. [image=] http://i.imgur.com/I5vgaRkl.png [/image] I was certa...

Re: Wednesday, June 16, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Not even a WAG on FJ! I literally never would have considered animated movies. I'm with TPH on this - they should not have used characters from animated films, or should have tried a different category name. End of whine. That was what sidetracked me. If it had been "cartoon character" or "animated...

No one knew the writer of the Rubáiyát? I am appalled! :)
Way to make 'em face the music, man.

My wife & I both thought exactly the same thing at the TS and responded simultaneously, though with the "Kai-yi-yi" at the beginning. Too far apart to punch each other in the arm, though.

Re: How Did Mayim Bialik Do as Host?

I'd put her number three on my list, behind Ken and Buzzy. I didn't find her quirkiness and perkiness off-putting, and did enjoy her enthusiasm and obvious delight at the opportunity to guest host. I do agree with those who have theorized that a female host may be an option TPTB would like.

Re: Wednesday, June 9, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I'd be interested in a poll on which 2 of the 3 states everyone said for DD2. I feel like Texas is the most obvious, but when you start with Kansas (like I did), it's more natural to jump to Arkansas after that. For me, Arkansas was immediate with Kansas about a second behind. Texas took another 10...

Arkansas and Kansas. I pronounce the terminal 's' on both states (as well as Illinois), much to the annoyance of twelvefootgirl. I'm close to both states and I've never heard "Arkansan" said aloud. It sounds like hell, and is confusing so I think even broadcasters just say "from Arkansaw". Mostly w...

Tinnitus was pronounced incorrectly. It's TIN-ə-təs. The British and healthcare professional pronunciation tends to sound like “TIN-ni-tus.” Listen. While the American and layperson pronunciation often sounds like “ti-night-tus” or “tin-NYE-tus.” Hear it here. So which one is right? Neither, either...

I think the study of xylophones is an underappreciated field. I agree. There is some disagreement whether glockenspiels and marimbas should be officially included within the sphere of xylology. As a purist I believe they should not. But where do you fall on the debate about vibraphones?

I got stuck on "giants" and guessed Gargantua and Pantagruel.
I think both of those make very reasonable guesses. If either Rabelais or Walton had occurred to me, I might have landed on one of them instead of matching Susie with Gulliver.

After further research, it's really not clear in the canon whether she used "Amidala" as princess or not. She used "Amidala" while campaigning for Queen. If her family's anonymity was her goal, it wouldn't have made sense for her to be a public official under her birth surname. Anybody know how we ...

Re: How Did Buzzy Cohen Do as Host?

I rate Buzzy and Ken about equal and ahead of everyone else. Each has different strengths. I think Ken has more gravitas and wit and a better interviewer. Buzzy has more energy and youth appeal. I’m not sure Buzzy has a better voice than Ken though. I think I’d pick Ken over Buzzy, but I can see wh...

FJ:  Pretty getable once you narrow it down to Italian composers, then you can eliminate Verdi (Aida came later) and Puccini (Madame Butterfly also was later). I got Faulkner on a stone cold guess. "County" is the TOM, though it isn't obvious. It looks like the book in the clue is Intruder in the Dust, which isn't on my flashcards, even though just about everything else by Faulkner is. Wow, that is one stealthily hidden TOM. I went with Richard Wright, th...

KDVR in Denver messed up. No sound for first segment, then went to Wheel of Fortune after sound returned during commercial. I'll have to "find" it now. Argh! Is it weird that Israel and Jordan aren't considered to border the Red Sea? Isn't the whole point of Eliat, Israel, so that the country has a Red Sea port?
