Re: Learned League 89 - May/Jun '21

Acclaimed American actor and singer Paul Robeson, whose international fame was established via his performance of "Ol' Man River" in Show Boat, was also closely identified with what Shakespeare character, whom he portrayed in London (1930) and on Broadway (1943)? Is there a TOM I am missing here th...

Re: Learned League 89 - May/Jun '21

I'm curious what others guessed for the station wagon question. I put limousine. I've watched enough Top Gear to know this cold. Same here, and to the person who put sedan, in the UK they call them Saloons... I was the JBizzaro miss on Carver with Washington. I should've gone with my gut but I feel...

Re: Learned League 89 - May/Jun '21

Ok, after the sting of 0(1) on MD9, I catapulted myself to 9(6) on MD10 Wasn’t sure about a few questions at first, but sat with them for a bit, got Munchkins from the DD angle, then Marco Polo from the year and the place, then Shia (WECIB), then sat with the damn art question until landing on graf...

Re: Learned League 89 - May/Jun '21

Kirov Ballet gets only 8%? Huh... My thoughts exactly. Leningrad + ballet = WECIB? If the question had said Leningrad (instead of St. Petersburg), I wouldn't have WAGged Lenin. I'm also in this boat but nho kirov. I'm really struggling this season, lowest q% so far in quite a while. I will not be l...

Re: Learned League 89 - May/Jun '21

Got my second Buckner win of the season 5(2)-4(4) yesterday. For some reason, I got 2 on the sports question (really? Check my stats) and I recently learned in OQL that Timbuktu is in Mali. All the others got a huh? from me. I did consider Maersk for the ship one but never knew the name of the ship ...

I don’t understand the scoring rules. What exactly should I be doing?
Read the first post in the thread but basically trying to give up as many points as possible...and ignore the actual standings.

Re: Learned League 88 - Feb/Mar '21

I made the championship of the General Knowledge Puzzle League ML in a nail-biter: in MD11 I was in #2 against #3, who would leapfrog me into second place if he won; I initially had two right answers and one Kosman Koin, then I just had a flash of inspiration to pull an answer for #6, which prevent...

Re: Learned League 88 - Feb/Mar '21

American Revolution league may be the worst of all time. The questions are disgustingly obscure. The worst part is the smith's description calls it PG-13 and made it seem like it would be accessible. You'd think she would figure out halfway through that the questions were too hard and changed some ...

Re: Learned League 88 - Feb/Mar '21

Did anyone else fall for Liberia? I was pretty confident and then when I saw Sierra Leone 🇸🇱 I remembered that was the brits’ version of Liberia. I did well with the rest of them. Of course...I also didn't rtfq and only put down bartlett and not the full name. Cost me a win but I wasn't making it t...

Re: Learned League 88 - Feb/Mar '21

Anyone else playing the 2 current MLs? Man the revolution one is hard/obscure with 3 questions under 5% get rate and an overall get rate in the 20% range. I understand making things hard but this has been a bit crazy. And I think I'm in the worst group ever on ML for the puzzle one. Collectively my ...

Re: Learned League 88 - Feb/Mar '21

Should've had my third beer of the season but despite reading many articles about GameStop I could not remember the ticker symbol... It didn't matter as I won 8(5)- 5(4) to end with an improbable promotion to B for next season (needed a forfeit loss from the player in second going into the last day)...

Re: Learned League 88 - Feb/Mar '21

For the baby-sitting question my first thought was detective, thinking of the "No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency" series, but couldn't believe there could possibly be 100 books in that series since it's written by a single author. Then I remembered the Baby-sitters Club series and that made much more ...

Re: Learned League 88 - Feb/Mar '21

I've heard of exactly 3 types of retrievers, golden, lab, and Chesapeake Bay. While it doesn't exactly strike me as icy, there was nothing else to go on for me. I've NHO a Nova Scotia retriever or a toller so that was a new one. I wasn't familiar with Bowie's backing band, and the best I could come ...

Re: Learned League 88 - Feb/Mar '21

I tied yesterday 5(4)-5(4) missing Attack and Nighthawks...pretty frustrating when I could see the painting in my head but I could not remember the title of it for the life of me. I also made my first ever BWA/joke answer with On Golden Pond for the manga one as I had absolutely no idea and no hope ...

Re: Learned League 88 - Feb/Mar '21

I got 5 right (Bose-Einstein / Cleveland / Kruger / Stalingrad / Angler), but moneyed a wrong guess of "Treatise" for "Essay". I also blew the Leadbelly answer with "Eileen", instead of "Irene". I could hear the lyric, but if I'd backed up to the "Good Night" part, it would have been an instaget. I...

Re: Learned League 88 - Feb/Mar '21

6 right for me in the Classic (Modern Family, Irene, Cleveland, Kruger, Stalingrad, Angler)...misses include boson for bose and treatise instead of essay. Others I had no clue on. I did manage to get all my moneys and qualify out of C for Magnolia and our 9th place finish. Not bad considering Magnol...

Re: Learned League 88 - Feb/Mar '21

I'm (mildly) surprised Bluegrass only came in at 42%. But Bill Monroe's name was obscure even in the popular heyday around the Deliverance and Bonnie and Clyde movies. I would have guessed it at 80% and Gorilla glue at 50% (instead of 92%). I got tangled in the Serbia/Croatia/Herzegovinia/Macedonia...

Re: Learned League 88 - Feb/Mar '21

There were definitely more than two female speakers in 2001. There was his daughter on the videophone, one of the stewardesses who asks him about his food, the scientist on the space station, and Frank's mother celebrating his birthday. I think there might have been another on the shuttle to Tycho ...
