Re: Masters Wednesday, May 24, 2023 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
Imagine how differently these games might have gone if James had called his clues in a different order. Instead of finding the Daily Double with his very first call of both games (how does he do that?), what if he’d hit them after building up a tidy stack? He missed both questions (a rarity for Jame...

Re: Tuesday, May 18, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
Actually, Panzer = tank is a derivative usage; the basic meaning is “armor.” The word is also used for an animal’s shell or carapace, like that of a turtle or a crab. So a Panzerschwein is an armored pig, or maybe even a “shell pig.” Not quite as colorful as “tank pig,” but the connection to a Germa...

It’s been a pleasure watching these old games. The material has been watered down ever since Harry Friedman took over from George Vosburgh as executive producer. I liked it better the old way.

It was a thrill and an honor to meet him and shake his hand at the UTOC. After the quarterfinals taping day, the whole ga...

Anna Oblonsky is the maiden name of this title character Um, her maiden name was Anna Arkadyevna Oblonskaya, not Oblonsky—just as, on marrying Alexei Karenin, she became Anna Karenina. Can you explain that? Russian surnames have a masculine and a feminine form, the latter formed by suffixing -a to ...

Did anyone else notice this? Kimberly Flynn: 4800-4800=0 Lindsay Evans: 11400-1801=9599 Nick Klotz: 15400+7401=22801 (New Champ) Surely Lindsay meant to bet 1799, preserving a residue of 9601 in case of a miss and keeping Kimberly shut out if she doubles up to 9600. That would be a pretty shrewd wag...

Has Alex ever been this tutorial with betting advice before the FJ clue reveal? Maybe he's sick of bad wagering day after day after day. He might as well have filled out their bets - I don't think 3rd place has (correctly) bet zero in this situation in recent memory. On the contrary, it’s player B ...

I was able to get both President's, since both Harrison and Taylor died very early into their presidential terms. My first thought was that Webster was a Whig, and the Whigs only ever won two presidential elections: Harrison in 1840 and Taylor in 1848. Realizing that both died in office, and both o...

good to see that champion was a one and doner I'm so glad you've added that thoughtful, incisive commentary to the discussion. Well, that was a travesty! Just as TPH said upthread, that was one of the biggest scoring foul-ups I’ve ever seen. In the first place, they were right the first time to neg Hannah on “Marsh of Dreams.” Somnus doesn’t mean “dream,” it means “sleep.” And even if they were to accept “dreams” as a stret...
