Didn't there use to be a poster with the handle "playforthetie"? I haven't noticed him around lately.

I can imagine this clue in a future "rhyme time" category: Shell-collecting cancer doctor.

This probably wasn't worth another post, but there it is.

Re: Friday, January 22, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I'm not asking anyone else to do research that I'm too lazy to do but at the same time, I am too lazy to research the history of tiebreaker FJs. I suspect they may tend to be easier, to avoid drawing the game out too long. This is a good start for research: http://www.j-archive.com/help.php#tiebrea...

Last time Caligula/Nero come up as a response I missed it and decided to figure it out or use a mnemonic. So that worked.. So? Did you figure something out? Do you have a mnemonic you’d like to share? I used the mnemonic “All Tigers Can Claw Now” to remember the order of Augustus/Tiberius/Caligula/...

  :(  ---- :(  ---- The 21st is a tough century for me. I try to keep up on Oscar winners, but as for tracking what films made how much money and when, my whirlwind, high-octane lifestyle doesn't really allow. I was happy to come up with 1917 a...

hegira was a horrible clue. Who's not going to be negbaited with hajj? :x Was Brayden trying to say Eton? Recorded in the archives as Eden. The Battle of Jericho was won on the playing fields of Eden. Nothing wrong with the hegira clue. It was appropriate for the bottom row (unlike "what col...

I did a little research because I wanted to make a joke about Bejamin being a different name, but lo and behold, it is actually a different name! https://www.babycenter.com/baby-names-bejamin-508075.htm I've also done a bit of research, and the following information has been culled from various sit...

Does bold mean I got them last time? If so, I missed lyre (and did again just now) and the sisters (got them this time; must have gone with the Gishes before). Among the extras, no way was I getting turban either time. I got the other two last time but didn't understand the "King of Queen" category ...

Re: Wednesday, December 9, 2009 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I almost switched to Bejamin Franklin since I didn't recognize Shadwell. I worried that for TJ the home should be Monticello. But I knew Jefferson sold a ton of books to the Library of Congress, so I figured I was safer sticking with him. When the first guess was revealed, it was Franklin and was r...

Not sure how the German accent would have helped; the category was literally GERMAN AMERICANS. "German Americans" need not imply German-born How widespread is this usage? This particular FJ is the only instance of GERMAN AMERICANS I found in the archive, but I found one example of Irish Americans a...

Not sure how the German accent would have helped; the category was literally GERMAN AMERICANS. "German Americans" need not imply German-born, and neither Ehrlichman nor Haldeman spoke with a foreign accent. Kissinger did (and probably still does). It definitely helped me at the time. :mrg...

Lance Armstrong yesterday, Roman Polanski today...a lot of these people's reputations have gone in interesting directions Polanski's was pretty well established already by 2007. As for Armstrong, he had already told us "It's Not About the Bike". I liked the Supreme Court cat. Santa Claus will be ha...

I actually do pretty well with very old films, but have not heard of "Sidewalks of New York". I'm guessing you were supposed to extrapolate the movie title from the song (albeit the 1894 song). Looking it up now, I see the movie was the biggest box office success of all Buster Keaton's films, thoug...

Re: Tuesday, April 4, 2006 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

There was some discussion last time about Alex's reading the clue in a German accent, though he dropped it about halfway through, if I remember right. He reportedly said afterward that he became suddenly concerned about leading the contestants. Falk said that he was so focused on reading that he did...

I had the outcome spoiled for me, but this was still fun to watch. I wonder if K.C. remembers what she was thinking on DD3. She decided to lose right then and there by betting too little to get past half Ken's score even if she picks up the $3600 left on the board. Alex even says, "You know what yo...

I was just playing this Sporcle quiz: https://www.sporcle.com/games/MSUKent/put-a-name-to-a-face-iii and now I've got a question. Why did Noël Coward pronounce his first name with only one syllable or am I wrong about the pronunciation? The presence of the ë would suggest it should be pronounced No...

What, you figure all us flightless types are pals? Lat time I talked to a road runner was when ACME left a package on my front porch that was supposed to go somewhere else.

But you got the last five words right, so... partial credit.

Surprised they didn't place a "Gloria" cat to the left of "In excelsis deo". I'm wondering though if it's written up correctly in the archive? It's not In "excelsis deo'? I ask because this way seems more logical and because the letter N actually does not appear in any answers. Of the bottom-row clu...
