Re: LL 100

I was allowed "Bon Appetite" for "Bon Appetit!", but busted for "Tarantela". I was sure I had a case for correction this morning and on re-read - exact spelling is required. My educated guess for the song came from my Book 1 piano lessons in sixth grade. If I knew spel...

Re: Thursday, March 14, 2024 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

At first I didn't like this FJ because it didn't specify Northern/Southern or Eastern/Western. Joke's on me, it works either way, I think. I still missed it. I guessed wrong on where Kofi Annan was from. As most of Ghana is west of the Prime Meridian, only Peru can be "only". Still, you c...

Re: 2023 RIP thread

Kevin seemed a right righteous dude. RIP, and condolences to the bereaved. Malachy McCourt , 92. He probably did not have "professional Irishman" printed on his business card, but hey, it's honest work. I wouldn't normally link such a paywalled site as the NYT, but "gadabout" in ...

I missed ice hockey, Robinson, and keystone. I did consider that last but didn't actually associate it with any particular color. I said "knight", hoping they were punning on "night".

"Senior senator" was a nice question, but too much for me in such a leisureless window.

NHO "Eurostar" as far as I can recall.

Nope, not even a glimmer of recognition.
Ditto
I went with "viaduct".

I knew "logarithmic" once, but this wasn't the time.

Comics artist Ramona Fradon, who did a lot of work for DC Comics over the years (including co-creating the character Metamorpho). She's also well-known for drawing the comic strip "Brenda Starr" from 1980 to 1995. She was 97, and had just announced her retirement from comics earlier this ...

Re: LL 100

Yesterday I tied 0(1)-0(1). I made the educated lucky guess on Nyquil, but I had no chance at all on any of the others. But it was funny to see Humpty Dumpty come up. Humpty Dumpty was my guess on last season's "Jack and Jill" question, but it was not on my radar at all for yesterday's qu...

Meiji was the one doing the restoring (of the supremacy of the emperor) after the long period of the shogunate.
As gifts of the Meiji go, I'll take a set of combs or a watch chain.

I didn't think 'leaders' for Abe; recognized none of them. I figured the only thing he's really going to ask about are dynasties, emperors, or PMs. The first two seemed fairly easy to eliminate and Abe is the only PM who I could name, so ... I guessed Meiji, since it had been restored at one time. ...

Re: Friday, February 23, 2024 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

The FJ! clue had me go on a detour to Iowa and Eulalie Shinn to guess an author. The pen name looked odd enough that I sniffed out an anagram, not that I knew his first name. If that were a LL question, maybe I can study it enough to come up with Rabelais. My guess was Nostradamus. Ditto this. I fo...

I thought Madonna made much more sense than Eminem yesterday. I assume, then, that you are unfamiliar with the lyrics to "Lose Yourself" and the thousands of memes they've generated. In fact, I'd been saying "me me" until recently. But Michigan, plus "Ciccone", plus &q...

Re: LL 100

I got my first win yesterday, though I had already managed one tie. I believe my 0-6 day last week was my first ever (forfeits aside). I might have guessed Central African Empire if it were a better day overall, but I seem to lack that indomitable spirit with which you fight just as hard for 0(1) as...

Re: (The) Invisible Man

The 1960 western "The Unforgiven" has a mediocre 6.6 rating on the IMDB, which may explain its absence from the Archive. Still, with John Huston directing and a cast including Burt Lancaster, Audrey Hepburn, Lillian Gish and Audie Murphy, I wonder if there are other reasons behind Jeopardy...

On MD1 I listed about 15 birthstones on a list and didn't recognize any computer references and wound up leaving it blank. I would have gone with sapphire or emerald over my own actual birthstone, ruby. I guessed Perl, having heard of "perlscript",which may have nothing to do with program...

Re: Wednesday, February 14, 2024 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

There is no such thing as "5x fewer"; 5x fewer than 5,000 is not 1,000. That was pretty atrocious. Also, by my quick careless calculation, Uruguay's area is about 3.25 times more than, or 4.25 times as much as the Netherlands's (not that I expect them to get that right). If Baldwin had be...

Re: Wednesday, February 14, 2024 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I was dubious about "Two Gentlemen of Verona" as a Broadway play but a search just now revealed to me that a musical version did premiere on Broadway in 1971. So, not so far-fetched that it may have seemed protean enough to accommodate a gender-switch, especially on Valentine's Day.

Re: Monday, January 29, 2024 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

It's always just one glove that gets lost. "Archduke Ferdinand" should not be accepted. They really need to get tougher about that. "Butler" seems pretty dull for midboard. I guessed Gentleman of the Bedchamber. I guess they'd have accepted a few variations on "bark is worse...
