Re: Learned League 89 - May/Jun '21

I had "wickets" for about 21 hours, but then I remembered they were in croquet, and why would be in both games? They aren't very similar.

ETA--Apparently India is the only right answer to Asian Literature & Drama $800, as Tagore wrote only the words/not the music to Bangladesh's national anthem. Still, that seems pretty deep for a second row clue. I'm curious how teapot37 fared with it. Is teapot37 an anthem expert? Thought another b...

Re: Monday, June 14, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I thought the FJ was fine and was shocked but not surprised when it proved a TS. I also thought Savannah did very well to keep her equilibrium amid such a shambles, considering it was her own debut. ETA--Apparently India is the only right answer to Asian Literature & Drama $800, as Tagore wrote only...

The only thing that was at all offputting was her reminding us repeatedly that she’s a PhD neuroscientist.

I've taken the liberty of posting that "first crossword puzzle". In the words of Rufus, they do get better.

 :(    :( "Hour" sounded more like a time period. The number 10,000 is not especially significant in the culture I was raised in. Sotomayor<--Souter was my first thought, but I thought some more. It was annoying to see "key" come up in FJ, but ...

Buzzy was the schizzle, but we already had a white man for 35+ years.
Pretty sure you mean "shiznit". Shizzle means "sure", as in "fo' shizzle."

Missed DD3 as my French is no bueno, Or 'maladroit'. I wonder if they pulled out the stylebook after Mike's "Could I get...?" clue request. Anyway, I hope it doesn't start a trend. Funny that just two of those baseball clues came with pictures. Barry Bonds became a lifetime .300 hitter only after t...

I missed cyberspace and guessed World Wide Web. Should I be reading William Gibson? How revered is he on this forum and what should I start with? All I knew about him was that he wrote sci-fi and apparently coined "cyberspace", but that has kept me in pretty good stead so far. Wikipedia tells me he...

On the one hand, I wouldn't call Northern Ireland a "country". On the other, I'm glad "Ireland" was (I gather?) outright negged, as I can remember it being BMSed in the past. England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland are called "constituent countries" or "home nations" in the UK. Yes, that is ...

I knew that the whole "10,000 steps a day" thing stems from the fact the character for 10,000 in Japanese (万) supposedly resembles a man walking.
I knew the number 10,000 was a big deal in the Far East, but "manpo-kei" doesn't sound a whole lot like "banzai".

NHO the frog hair expression. :? I'd never heard of that or "one swallow does not make a summer" (which seems like a good candidate for a "that's what he said!" quip). I'm more used to "one swallow doesn't make a spring", but apparently the summer version goes back to ancient Greece, before spring ...

I'm curious what others guessed for the station wagon question. I put limousine. Same Went with hearse over limousine. What led to station wagon? Is there a specific cultural reference I’m missing? In a more trivial vein, BJ Thomas's "(Hey Won't You Play) Another Somebody Done Somebody Wrong Song" is the longest-titled Billboard #1 ever if (a) you don't count medleys, and (b) you do include any parentheticals in the title (the medley, by the way, is Stars on 45's 1981 “Medley: Intro Venus/Suga...

Nietzsche is pietzsche, but Sartre is smartre. "Fifth Avenue outpost" put me off the Met. I know the Cloisters is great, but Fifth Avenue is the main building, certainly the most visited. It's weird to call it an "outpost". It shouldn't have been too hard to come up with a clearer "i" team than the ...
