Re: Friday, May 22, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

If I were a Yalie, I'd be very upset at those two. Apparently I will NEVER stop confusing Ben Hur and Lawrence of Arabia. But now that I'm reading the wikis side-by-side, it's American vs British. Charlton Heston vs Peter O'Toole. And, most importantly, ancient Rome vs WWI-era...well, Arabia. It's ...

Re: Tuesday, May 19, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I thought I had a 4th-podium win for sure after seeing my results in the first round: LT on Batwoman, navy beans, William Golding, Rotterdam, and trough-furlough. Then got blanked until the last clue about Cain. Congrats to Ben on a nice, solid second win. And I'm with the earlier boardie who was he...

Re: Tuesday, May 19, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Coryat $37,200 (45R, 1W) DD 3/3 FJ  $7400 LT, not enough for the fourth-podium victory. Alex said something to the effect that if you didn't come up with the 1719 novel first, you were going to struggle on FJ. However, I didn't read the 1719 portion of the clue until after I had gotten SFR...

Re: Monday, May 18, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Instaget FJ here. The Bill of Rights struck me as a bad guess as the wording seems the inspiration for the 2nd amendment. I suspect you're exactly right, although I have never read the AoC. It seemed very strange to me that someone would know that the right to bear arms and the mention of a militia...

Re: Monday, May 18, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I was so happy to get away from the GOAT games and back to "mere-mortal" degree of difficulty. I had a decent game instead of standing and staring as I was when watching Ken-James-Brad. LT on Martin (Buber and Heidegger), pomegranate, and good old Mt. Aconcagua, plus the DD on Beluga that was missed...

Re: Reretaken Down

Starlings are a nasty invasive species. And mourning doves are annoyingly noisy. I like other birds. We have mourning doves in our neighborhood and I find their plaintive cry to be one of the loveliest sounds in all of nature. I'm shocked that anyone's take on them could be so 180-degree opposite. ...

Re: Monday, May 4, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

It is quite astonishing to see that Julia almost won this and how close KJ came to being just another contestant. IIRC He dodged another bullet in his 5th game. If his opponent had correctly answered FJ, it would've been "Buh-Bye!" And that is what constitutes "a J! player winning because of luck" ...

If this turns out to be the last week of regular/non-rerun shows for J! this season, this is the way I want to go out. My 5-for-5 weeks aren't all that common.

Re: Friday, May 1, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

New Mexico, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana was a little more difficult because of the size of the box, but it was essentially the same trick. I didn't think that should have been the hardest clue. Not difficult at all for this kid, born and raised in Texas. In fact I precalled this one but wrote if ...

Re: Friday, May 1, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

One HELL of an almost-comeback by Quemars, until he negged on the next-to-last clue and made it mathematically impossible for him to overtake Jesse again. Odd note: clue in this game says Priestly called oxygen "pure air." Yet in a J! quiz I took once upon a time a clue said he called it "dephlogist...

Re: Friday, May 1, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Playing devil's advocate here: what disqualifies Belize? It also has "el" in its name. Nothing in the clue said the article had to be a separate word or used in its Spanish-language context. If the answer is only, "But El Salvador, and it said the ONLY country..." then the clue falls apart because ...

Re: Friday, May 1, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

FJ gave me little trouble. Wasn't all that confident on El Salvador, but WECIB? WECIB?? I debated between "El Salvador" and "La"-os. (OK, not really, but that was the weird thought that flitted through my brain this game, so I thought I'd share before we all go our separate ways...

We have mentioned Maggie leaving, but that is all I remember
I'm glad I got to meet Maggie before she left.
This.
I was also fortunate enough to meet Maggie a few years ago. I'm still calming myself to get past the adrenaline rush of being in her presence. :D

Re: Thursday, April 30, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Idle question:

I know what the rule used to be, but I don't know if the rule has changed.

In a clue such as today's FJ, the correct response itself is a question. So is it necessary to say "WHAT IS 'What's in your wallet'?"

Would it be negged if you wrote down only the slogan?

Rivers was also very imepenetrable. Any reason I should know where the Tigris river is? I'm going to try to avoid sounding snarky, but the Tigris should be known to everybody as one of the most important rivers in the history of civilization. Not to mention being in every newscast about the Iraq wa...

Delighted to see Ms. Hutto win #4. She is so engaging and natural. Only the teensiest bit of LT today $1600 for curry, carbon dioxide, cinnamon bear, and Johannesburg. Three contestants did a nice job with the high-value clues. Now 3-for-3 in FJ this week. Let's see if I can close out regular season...

Re: Wednesday, April 29, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Four-letter words with three vowels: airy. Genuine question: does J! consider Y to be a vowel in this kind of context? Thanks. Certainly. And we've had this discussion before. As I learned in grade school, the vowels are A-E-I-O-U "and sometimes Y and W." "Y" in "year" is a consonant. in "why" it i...

I have no desire to see reruns of content that I saw just three months ago where many of the questions are likely still in my mind. Re: Tuesday, April 28, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

FJ was helped by my annual speed-watch of The Ten Commandments. Record it all in advance, 4+ hours, then FF thru the slow parts. But I always watch the ending, so that phrase was recently imprinted on my brain. As long as I've been alive, it seems that two movies are shown on network TV every bless...
