Re: Thursday, November 21, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

No, the term for three acute angles is an acute triangle. Scalene means that the three sides (therefore also the three angles) are all different. The two trios are acute/right/obtuse and scalene/isosceles/equilateral. Scalene and isosceles triangles can be acute, right, or obtuse (equilateral has to...

The way this show consistently ignores the ‘okina in the Hawai’ian language is sloppy and frustrating. The words lanai and Lana’i are different words! Are you willing to give a brief rundown of the difference? That sounds interesting. Short version: it marks a glottal stop (a catch in the throat, a...

I'm not certain that they adequately pinned the Timberland $400. Oregon is well within the range of the Western white pine (and even the more common Ponderosa pine is sometimes called a"Western white pine" in the wood biz). No stats that I can find on how much they produced in 1900, though. Adding t...

4. The clue board will finally adopt proper English Style with commas and periods inside quotation marks. English style is outside. The long-term trend appears to be moving towards "outside" style (since it eliminates ambiguity in technical contexts, etc.). Wikipedia uses "English" style despite be...

Re: Thursday, May 2, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

"Watch" refers to a period of time? Four hours, the traditional on-duty period for sailors. In the clue, it was 3 hours. This is another instance of a clue that was so easy I was sure I was missing something. Not James, though. As usual he pounced. Isn't rock candy another rock we eat?... :D Two, a...

Would "bed and breakfast" have been accepted for the "room and board" clue? I can't remember the exact wording that clue had.
That was my answer too, but the reference to California law probably pins it to room and board. Serious neg-bait...

Thought on Wayne's tactics: finding the final DD as quickly as possible is not necessarily the winning idea. You also have to have enough ammo ($) to make it count. With a category where you appear to have an advantage, picking up that money may be your best chance at actually winning.

Lazy me watchded it early on Reddit. I wonder what they would've done if someone had said "Mark Chesnutt" on the "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing" clue? Alex didn't say it absolutely had to be a Hot 100 peak, and Chesnutt's version was also released in 1998 and was a #1 hit on Hot Country Singles & Tr...

How were we supposed to know Sweden in that Book category for $400? I saw nothing whatsoever pointing to Sweden.
Nobel was Swedish, and all except the peace prize are selected by Sweden-based entities. Not a solid, but enough to get there with high probability.

I’d treat the clue as if saying “Russia” would prompt a BMS from the judges. If you could come up with the USSR after that, count it.
That would actually be a "be less specific", since Russia is a subset of the USSR. (They actually used that phrasing once, going from Old Testament to Bible.)

On COLORFUL AMERICAN CITIES I precalled Baton Rouge. I think that would have been a TOC-worthy twist. I wonder if there are enough like that to field a category of five. Heck, you could do it with French alone. Baton Rouge you mentioned, add Grand Blanc (MI), Verdigris (OK), Montrose (CO), Roncever...

Re: Friday, November 3, 2017 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

I got FJ on remembering some controversy involving World Cup soccer qualifying. They passed a rule a while back that qualifying matches can't be played at higher than a certain altitude--and it then turned out Bolivia doesn't have any adequate stadia below that altitude... But then the tricky part. ...
