Re: Wednesday, December 18, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I'm on the west coast, so the political theater didn't interrupt the J! airing for me. I stayed clam initially on the 3rd/5th wheel clue. The description sounded like what I've always known as a 3rd wheel. But that didn't make sense for a carriage. Never heard the phrase 5th wheel in that context. I...

Re: Tuesday, December 17, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Some days you're the hammer, some days you're the nail. That's got to sting a bit after such a strong performance yesterday.

I wrestled with FJ trying to come up with some alternative to "vote". The date just seemed wrong for an election. Fortunately, nothing as likely came to mind.

As far as this Anteater is concerned, Opus properly explained the meaning of Zot! So now readers are in position to understand that UC Irvine students get quarterly ZOTBills for their tuition and other fees. Yes - they say ZOTBill right on them. And you can pay them online through your ZOT account. ...

Re: Wednesday, December 11, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I think you're underestimating the people here. I'd bet a solid 25% would know Hanford. Although I could be overestimating based on it being in Washington. Depends on how it's asked. Ask me what happens at Hanford, and I'll say it's a lab working on nuclear projects. Ask me for the name of the Nucl...

Re: Wednesday, December 11, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I thought the judges were generous to give Jennifer credit for whatever she said instead of (Charles) Perrault. I turned on closed captions and they transcribed her response as “Pure-Oh”, whereas I’m pretty sure she was saying something closer to Pierrot. Maybe it was the right call for a foreign n...

 :( :( :( :( :( :( :( One of my worst weeks. Luther's Theses was pretty quick for me, but the rest I was pretty clueless. Tues: the right response is unfamiliar to me. Have no idea at all what they are talking about in either the clue or the response. Wed: Dreaded Opera. I can get a top row...

Re: Thursday, December 5, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I hate categories like the Jeff Goldblum category. He was so slow reading the clues...really slowed down the game. The first clue he read was painful. And it went down hill from there. Not only is he slow at reading the clues, the writers gave him incredibly long and drawn out clues to read. His sl...

OMG, that Fenway clue! Fortunately my TV is too nice to throw objects at it. I was pounding myself on that one. I absolutely know where the Red Sox play. But I couldn't pull it up. I had to pause the show after the first wrong response to try to give myself time to get it, and it simply wouldn't po...

Those things pictured on the ice cream are, and forever will be, sprinkles. Never heard of them called jimmies, and I will never call them jimmies because they are sprinkles. :D There's a small chain of sandwich shops in my area that uses the term Jimmie it up to refer to adding all of the extras to...

I'm still way behind on my DVR, but finally got to this game.

Was only $5800 on the stumpers, but I'll add in the two extras to get to 7400. A correct FJ from there gets me a win with any reasonable wager. Unless Mohammed's light bulb clicks 2 seconds quicker in this alternate universe.

Any reason I should know that German salad is made from potatoes? It's not German salad, it's German this salad, or German ___________ salad. The foodie route to the answer is to know what German _____ salad distinctively uses vinegar. It didn't hurt my chances on this clue that I don't like vinega...

Re: Thursday, November 28, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

A rather ugly FJ for me. Came up with several wrong answers. Incarnation? No - Christian undertones, plus the carne in the middle is latin. Corporeal? More latin in corpus. Condescend? Probably not - too similar to descend in the clue. Never thought about the word avatar having a meaning other than ...

I guess weekends are for hijacking game threads - the monte cristo club is where the cool people hang 8-) Any sandwich can be improved by dipping it in batter and deep frying it. I remember the first time I ate a monte cristo. All I could think of was what kind of sorcery is this? Taking a boring h...

Also, the clue didn't specify Euclidean geometry, where the parallel postulate is accepted. If you place a triangle on a globe as in an elliptic geometry (defining a line as the arc of a great circle), you can get triangles whose angles sum to greater than 180 degrees, and hence you can have a tria...

A very annoying FJ for me. I'm a fan of a YouTube channel that tells the stories of well-known failed businesses - how they grew and what lead to their demise. I'm sure Blockbuster has been covered. And the date clues are there. But Radio Shack was the first thing that came to mind and I couldn't sh...

Measurement: I don't think I'd have gotten the $200 clue without having seen others first. But I'd like to think I'd have gotten the $1000 clue if I had seen a couple of others. I'm familiar with all three of the examples there. Unlike the $600 clue, where I knew neither. My personal order for the c...

Re: Thursday, November 14, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

That was a lamentable FJ! for me. Jeremiad is not (OK - was not) in my vocabulary, so that wasn't a help. Longest book? Isn't that Psalms? (Quick sanity check after the fact - Jeremiah is 130 pages in my Bible, Psalms is 180. Not the measurement specified in the clue, of course.) But Psalms doesn't ...
