Re: Wednesday, November 29, 2023 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I think I remember reading news regarding this that made me surprised to learn that Stonehenge was even private property. I long thought it was just ... out there, on the plain. Like Devil's Tower or something. That and "disarray" helped me get FJ. There was also the Ted Lasso episode wher...

Burt Thakur is running for Congress in TX-3. Presumably he was when he taped. I thought there were rules about being on the show while a candidate for office, but I guess TPTB didn't have a problem with it since it was a second-chance tourney.

Every Trekkie J fan in America: How TF could such a softball FJ clue be a TS? Every normal J! Fan in America: Who TF is Pavel Chekov? This non-Trekkie got as far as "that Russian guy on Star Trek played by Anton Yelchin (RIP) in the later movies" and could not come up with his name in 30 ...

I would have written "Juts." Pronounced with a long U, of course, like the French interjection Zut.

My petty nit is that deepfake is not a portmanteau, it's just a compound word. Portmanteau better works for blended words like smog and ginormous.

Another notable 1900 novel in my Pavlov set is Sister Carrie, but that obviously didn't work for this clue.

I didn't see the game--did Mayim acknowledge that Hannah's response (Leigh) was the correct response's mother?

Maybe I spend too much time on Twitter, but this was a cheeky fact that I already knew because I saw it posted somewhere. Can't name the other Herbs, though.

Anyway, for FJ I guessed On Golden Pond, which was based on a play and was nominated for an Oscar but did not win. The movie has only 7 characters.

The number is rather prominently featured on the package in most brands.

I said Norman Mailer, though I don’t think his writing about Gary Gilmore was “sparked by ire” about capital punishment.

TIL that the Lisfranc injury was named after a French guy. I had thought it was some kind of weird portmanteau.

Lisa is very funny and a joy to watch, and I get that people freeze up, but I can’t imagine going into FJ in first place without a lock and spending my think time looking for a laugh instead of naming an author. Any author. Say Twain.

I am rather amazed it was a triple stumper.

I only learned recently that Grimace the McDonald's character was originally designed to be evil à la Hamburglar, and was meant to resemble a giant taste bud. I couldn't figure out why they'd name a kid's character after an expression of pain.

Pluto still isn't a planet but we can count Pu on the list since it was fraudently a planet at the time. Only Venus, Mars, and Jupiter are snubbed. I just say Plutonium is a dwarf element now and have done with it. Here's a better one: besides aluminum, what two elements have different spellings in...

I am disappointed that Ken missed the chance to say “Right, Stephen” when Stephen got Steven Wright right.

For FJ! I said The Sting which I knew was made before 1980. Even with the Nazis, I have a hard time thinking of Raiders as being pinned to a time.

I like a lot of old French film and certainly knew about Grand Illusion, but another Renoir film, Rules of the Game, seemed to fit the quote so well that I didn't stop to think there might be a better one.

I thought today's FJ might be a "Welcome to the J-Canon", but there's one hit, in a Teen Tournament game interestingly enough (DJ6). That clue is very similar to this one. https://www.j-archive.com/showgame.php?game_id=5460 I knew this one from my Barnes and Noble days. I don't think I've...
