Re: How Did Mayim Bialik Do as Host?

She’s been my favorite so far. Her enunciations are clear. I like that she, like Alex, presents as someone who has a command of the material in front of her. (Not recognizing Gorsuch’s name was one exception, but that might have had to do with the contestant’s handwriting.) Her interjections haven’t...

Re: Thursday, June 10, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I was shocked (and deeply saddened) to learn that the revisionist Hardy Boys writers had killed off Iola Morton. This would have been inconceivable in my time with the lads (last one I read was probably in 1962). I was even more surprised they hadn't changed Iola's name since it pretty much places ...

The recall election was quite the circus. There were something like 130 candidates that qualified for the ballot. I still have the sample ballot. Gallagher (he of the watermelon question a couple of weeks ago) was one of the candidates, if I recall. Recognized the name Ada Louise Huxtable and confu...

Mayim has been bubbly, but I think it injects some needed life into the show without being distracting. And unlike with many of the other guest hosts, she comes across to me as having a convincing grasp of the material. Nice FJ clue. I had briefly thought of Sentinel but couldn't pin it to the citie...

I’ve been sitting on a draft of a clue about Munchkins for the Final J! thread, because I had always wondered how Dunkin Donuts had acquired the trademark, if they had to go through the estate or something. It turns out another company had already owned it , so they licensed it for $1 a year. And th...

It sounds like Jennifer was already in the mindset of preserving 2nd place by the time she hit the DD.

The year and the fact that it's his most famous work points to Nighthawks, but Automat (1927) and Chop Suey (1929) are two other well-known Hopper paintings set in restaurants.

Re: Friday, May 21, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Best I could muster was J.F. Cooper for FJ. :( At least I went 6/6 on DDs to close the week. Ryan B. and Ryan H. will also be separated. I also like to think the show would not pair Jennifer and Jason based on regular season numbers. What complicates things is that Sam is W2, and I'm not sure it's ...

Mel Gibson certainly wasn't a bad guess, but would they really refer to him as a "director?"
Or "Hollywood Legend?" For some reason that category name had me thinking of the Golden Age. Not someone still alive and working.

Given this is a high-profile gig, one has to think he will be in the running to be a permanent replacement...
I'm a little surprised they aren't having him host a couple of weeks of regular-season shows as a warm-up to the tournament.

FJ was an instaget. I knew Lizzie Borden's murders took place in New Bedford, Massachusetts, which is Rhode Island adjacent. Also notorious from New Bedford was the gang rape which was dramatized in the movie The Accused, for which Jodie Foster won an Oscar. The murders took place in Fall River. Th...

Having Mr. Rogers be the correct response on Mr. Rodgers' hosting debut feels like more than a coincidence. Overall I liked his flow, seemed a bit more fluid and graceful than the others have been so far. He ad-libbed off the clues pretty well ("sackbut": "I've never heard of it either"). I was plea...

xkcd is now J! canon! ( well...at least one degree within canon... https://what-if.xkcd.com/ ) "We" were in its (pretty much): Except that is not xkcd, it's Strange Planet. During the interviews, when Oz said Susan's hometown of Portland, Maine was "a stone's throw" from Paul's hometown of Portsmouth, Rhode Island, I wondered if he was confusing it with the much-closer Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

I got FJ but am a little surprised nobody guessed John C. Fremont.

Between Amal's pauses and 11 triple stumpers, I was amazed they got through all 60 clues.

Got locked onto Jules Verne and made a bad FJ guess of Journey to the Center of the Earth.

Re: "We were looking for..."

It's a little tiresome, but I think it shows how hard it is for the host to think on their feet while also keeping their focus on the clues and gameplay. And another subtle way that Alex was a master at what he did. (I seem to recall Ken doing it less, but I may be wrong.)
