Mel Gibson certainly wasn't a bad guess, but would they really refer to him as a "director?"
Or "Hollywood Legend?" For some reason that category name had me thinking of the Golden Age. Not someone still alive and working.

Given this is a high-profile gig, one has to think he will be in the running to be a permanent replacement...
I'm a little surprised they aren't having him host a couple of weeks of regular-season shows as a warm-up to the tournament.

FJ was an instaget. I knew Lizzie Borden's murders took place in New Bedford, Massachusetts, which is Rhode Island adjacent. Also notorious from New Bedford was the gang rape which was dramatized in the movie The Accused, for which Jodie Foster won an Oscar. The murders took place in Fall River. Th...

Having Mr. Rogers be the correct response on Mr. Rodgers' hosting debut feels like more than a coincidence. Overall I liked his flow, seemed a bit more fluid and graceful than the others have been so far. He ad-libbed off the clues pretty well ("sackbut": "I've never heard of it either"). I was plea...

xkcd is now J! canon! ( well...at least one degree within canon... https://what-if.xkcd.com/ ) "We" were in its (pretty much): Except that is not xkcd, it's Strange Planet. A strange wrinkle to this FJ was that the name Milton Glaser sounded familiar to me, but I didn't know why. (It might be becau...

During the interviews, when Oz said Susan's hometown of Portland, Maine was "a stone's throw" from Paul's hometown of Portsmouth, Rhode Island, I wondered if he was confusing it with the much-closer Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

I got FJ but am a little surprised nobody guessed John C. Fremont.

Between Amal's pauses and 11 triple stumpers, I was amazed they got through all 60 clues.

Got locked onto Jules Verne and made a bad FJ guess of Journey to the Center of the Earth.

Re: "We were looking for..."

It's a little tiresome, but I think it shows how hard it is for the host to think on their feet while also keeping their focus on the clues and gameplay. And another subtle way that Alex was a master at what he did. (I seem to recall Ken doing it less, but I may be wrong.)

Re: Jeopardy! Interim Host Thread

An interesting working list to keep during these weeks would be of players who appeared on the show under more than one host. By my count there are only 7 so far: Nick Cascone Laura Portwood-Stacer* Sam Stapleton* Zach Newkirk* Jim Gilligan Paul Roder (3/31/97 Trebek; 4/1/97 Sajak) Christian Stallsm...

"We were looking for..." after every triple stumper was getting on my nerves. Katie seems to have the same habit. Overall I think he was watchable.

I'll cycle back to Mark's baseball thread. They were all Boomer friendly except the Jeter one. I could have known it if I wanted to but Yankee related information is rejected at the second filter after the Kardashian firewall. To be fair, baseball nicknames were much cooler back in the day. I think...

I knew the book Pioneers (I own a bookstore) but then went and confused Cooper with Jack London. Then said Kipling for Tolstoy—the name did not sound particularly Russian to me. For FJ I immediately went to the only playwright whose birthplace I knew. I remember being a teenager looking for summer j...

How many people got Samuel Barber?
I have an R.E.M. concert CD in which Michael Stipe waggishly introduces "Stand" (one of their more, er, polarizing songs) as ranking "alongside Samuel Barber's 'Adagio' and the theme song from 'Chariots of Fire'." That's the only way I knew it.

There was nothing to piece together for FJ because I already knew that August Wilson wrote Jitney. The producers were obviously throwing me a line after a rough week previous.

I also said "aubergine" instead of "mauve."

I was stuck because I hadn’t understood that there was such a distinction between a coastline and a shoreline. I said New Hampshire, though it should have been obvious what the estuary in question was. This chart uses the term ‘coastline’ for both: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_U.S._states_a...

Remembering this FJ helped me to get tonight's.

I was not ready for Botany Bay in a top-row clue, even spotted "plants" and "alliterative."
