Re: Friday, April 30, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

"Ix" gave Final J away for me ... it was referenced in the FJ from this game in 1998 ...

https://j-archive.com/showgame.php?game_id=614

... which was reprinted in one of the old Jeopardy! Quiz Books, volumes that proved invaluable for J! prep back in the olden times.

I'm guessing Constantinople would've gotten negged like Byzantium?
It should have been. There's a whole song about why.
Anybody else sing TMBG lyrics to the "Think!" music tonight?
I was thinking of the Four Lads’ 1953 original. Same lyrics, though.

I’ve seen Saving Mr. Banks, which made FJ an instsaget. However, at the end of that film, Travers (as played by Emma Thompson) appeared to have been won over by Disney’s treatment of her novel.

Re: Monday, March 22, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

the Category was Initially Yours, i think they should of Had to Say the Initials. Agreed. Requiring the contestants to know the correct initials is the whole point of the category; otherwise, it’s a random set of clues about famous people. I’m sure Alex (or Ken, or Mike) would have asked for a BMS....

A couple of hours before J! aired, I watched a 1955 episode of "You Bet Your Life" on Tubi. Ex-heavyweight champ Joe Louis and his playing partner were TKO'd by Groucho's $1,000 jackpot question, "what is the present-day name of the strait formerly known as the Hellespont?"

An FJ! clue that's easy when you know where it's going... Word. Did not know Billy Wilder was a writer, but did not know the writer Some Like It Hot , so decided to go with Wilder. Wilder was a very successful writer for years before he directed his first film in the US in 1942. He usually (maybe a...

Fired up DVD of Gods and Generals, find there's an introduction by Ted Turner. Realized only a few seconds in that I have literally never heard Ted Turner's voice before in my life. Addendum: Thanks MST3K for pointing this out for me decades ago so I'll never forget...how can you have a Special App...

Nor do I.

Re: OBIT: Alex Trebek

I'm probably more upset about this than I have a right to be. I didn't really know him, beyond a few casual chats. But he's been on my television since I was about five years old, which was when we got our first TV (B&W, 17"). He had children late in life, but he got to see them grow to adulthood. ...

Re: Regis Philbin Has Passed Away

My mom still refers to Regis as "the sidekick from the Joey Bishop Show". I remember the night in 1968 that Regis stormed off Joey's late-night talk show in a fit of pique. That evening, ABC stations hyped the walk-off, which had been taped earlier in the day, and enough viewers (including our fami...

Re: Poll on Boardies Covid-19 Impact

Fleeboy, how long would you say it took you to fully recover? You only had the cough for one day? I felt unwell for about five weeks in all, ending in mid-March -- around the time everything started shutting down. The lingering effects were nasal congestion and a mildly upset stomach. The dry cough...

Re: Poll on Boardies Covid-19 Impact

Thanks for posting this. Add me to the list of those who were ill through February. I initially wrote it off as a lingering cold or the effects of taking flu and pneumonia vaccines on the same day. However, there was one day on which I had a persistent, severe dry cough. Two people with whom I was i...

Re: Monday, May 4, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

They reran Ken’s first game at the end of S25. It was probably also rerun on Daytime Jeopardy (or whatever they called it then) a year after its original airing. I don't think they started doing the daytime run until around the 2012-13 season, when it was listed as a repeat of Jeopardy! They change...

Re: Monday, February 17, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

The SURVIVOR category was finished last in the J! round and needing to complete that ate up time for DJ! when 6 clues worth $8800 including DD3 were not played. What's the record for the highest combined dollar value of uncovered clues in a non-celebrity game? This has to be close. This game had $1...

Overthunk that one  . I figured, just name a Confederate general that isn't Lee. Because if it was Lee, it surely would be Pavlov material for this event, which I get mixed up with the Jayhawk narrative anyway. Uh, name a General?? I didn't think of Pickett, and always forget Stonewall was no...

I don't know where my brain was vacationing during Final Jeopardy!, but my response was "Goth." If I'd been a contestant, maybe my sloppy handwriting could've made it look enough like "Gath" to get me the win, but I doubt it. Now I am imagining Goliath with his hair dyed black, wearing eyeliner and...

Initially dismissed Hotel California, as I've always associated it with 1977 (the title track wasn't released as a single until late February of that year), but no other album of that time that I could think of seemed to fit the clue.
