Re: 2020 Current Events Study Guide

Screenwriter Buck Henry died of a heart attack in Los Angeles on Wednesday. He was 89. Henry was twice nominated for Academy Awards, for writing The Graduate and for co-directing Heaven Can Wait (with Warren Beatty). He co-created the TV show Get Smart with Mel Brooks. He was also the first person t...

I paused for a generous amount of time on the Colombo clue in O is the Only Vowel and still couldn't pull it. Even with 30 seconds, I wasn't getting there
Not even with the "just one more thing..." hint? That was my in there.

Re: 2019 Current Events Study Guide

Radio talk host Don Imus died at age 79 on December 27. He had retired from broadcasting in 2018. He was frequently controversial over his nearly 50-year career, perhaps most famously in describing the Rutgers women's basketball team (who had just lost the 2007 NCAA title game to Tennessee) as "napp...

Re: LL83: Learned League

I don't want to jinx it, but this is the first season where I've gotten to this point in a season with 0 MCW. I'm the opposite. I have 14 MCW through today (which leads my rundle). I've gotten 37 questions wrong, so that means 38% of my misses have been the MCW. Is a low MCW a good thing? This isn'...

Re: LL83: Learned League

Kind of surprised the MCW on Carousel was Oklahoma. My Kosman Koin was between Carousel and State Fair; I couldn't figure which one was more likely to have a barker as a character.

I don't want to jinx it, but this is the first season where I've gotten to this point in a season with 0 MCW.

Pre-empted for me, and we've just got a MASH rerun on their subchannel, so no show here tonight.

Re: Friday, December 13, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

NHO Bowman or Panini America I hadn't heard of Panini America, but apparently they bought out Donruss, who I had heard of. That's the other one! I could only come up with 3 baseball card companies (my collecting days would have been in the mid 80s) - Topps, Donruss, and what I thought was Fleet, bu...

Of course there's also the song "Susie Q" by Dale Hawkins and made famous by CCR.
The Suzy Q is also a Hostess devil's food snack cake (similar to Drake's Devil Dogs).

Re: LL83: Learned League

Although lacking formal education, Fields was well read and a lifelong admirer of author Charles Dickens, whose characters' unusual names inspired Fields to collect odd names he encountered in his travels, to be used for his characters. Fields often contributed to the scripts of his films under unu...

Re: LL83: Learned League

Was very stoked to see the Booknotes question -- it's a show before my time, but I happened to visit its online archives while writing a couple of history papers years ago. TV is not a strong suit of mine, so it felt good to get an obscure one in that category. From anyone who got the W. C. Fields ...

Well. Had one of the rarest ties, the dreaded 8(4)-8(4). He did not know the Gamecube or W.C. Fields, and I could not remember Lebanon (I vaguely recall this but I couldn't bring it up) and Booknotes (I see a show called "Book TV" on C-SPAN in the TV listings when flipping around every now and again...

Re: Monday, December 9, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I wonder if that's the first time "come out of the closet" has ever been said on the show? I knew disassociative was a word but I thought the neg was because they were going for the name of the condition which is dissociative. I forgot the category and said catharsis. Damn it! Fj was an insta get f...

Wahaddi just wasn't close enough. Nor was dropout.
Yup, I thought I had a chance with The Dropout (almost took a flier with The Graduate, which would have been a hoot) but no love without the modifier.
Graduation was Kanye's third album. His second: Late Registration.

Re: LL83: Learned League

Playing from the sidelines. I opted for Plath over Dickinson, but in retrospect, I should have gotten it because of the "Yellow Rose of Texas" rule. I never knew why turbinado sugar was called that, but I figured it out. My Pop Music score isn't so good, but I'm 58 so "Soul Train" was an instaget. ...

Re: LL83: Learned League

Mixed up the traditional wedding processional (from Wagner's Lohengrin) and the recessional (from Mendelssohn's A Midsummer Night's Dream). Cost me in the private rundle, but I still got the win in my regular rundle.

Re: The Official TPH Education Thread (POTENTIAL GAME DAY SPOILERS)

Any reason I should know that German salad is made from potatoes? 0/5 in Women of Science. I saw no way to figure out "engineering" in the first box. What was the TOM for "Naples" in the top box? I "went with the obvious" and figured top-box Italy had to be Rome, right? Why was it wrong? What was e...

Re: Friday, November 29, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Tried to think of a novel actually set in Britain fitting the clue and couldn't really come up with anything. Even if Ireland was part of the UK at the time, calling Stoker "British" is kind of dirty pool.

Re: LL83: Learned League

I had nothing better than isosceles, which I’d only ever seen in the context of triangles Math is my strongest category and this was still an educated guess for me — I figured if you extended the non-parallel sides, you'd get an isosceles triangle. Normally I'll stick 3 on any math question I'm uns...
