Re: Monday, June 21, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I considered Noah Webster, but I was afraid I was confusing him with Daniel Webster and couldn't be sure Noah was from the Dickinsons' neck of the woods, so I left the two New Englanders behind for Roget, who was decidedly an Old Englander. It was an unsatisfying game, and the satisfaction of solvin...

All three players were J! contestants. The other two: https://www.j-archive.com/showplayer.php?player_id=3973 https://www.j-archive.com/showplayer.php?player_id=10336 My DVR is unpredictable, but today it functioned normally, which I'm glad about because I was out of the house and this episode was a...

Re: Wednesday, June 16, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I loved Evan's story of having been "born during an episode of Jeopardy!". It made me wonder, who was the first contestant in regular play who was born during the Trebek era. And your question makes me wonder whether the inaugural Kids Week (aka Back to School Week) contestants at the start of seas...

I've read "The Metamorphosis," but I didn't recognize the line (assuming it was at the beginning of the work probably blocked my mind); however, Kafka was the only writer I could think of.

Regina and angina each in the bottom-left of the board in their respective rounds. That can't be a coincidence (though it was a happy one that Emily got to give both of them).

Re: Wednesday, June 16, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

It would have been very surprising if Katie had bet low and managed to prevail above Sarah's winning total. It would have been funny if Katie had anticipated Sarah wagering to keep Evan locked out, therefore a maximum score of $12,799, and left herself $12,801, only to find herself tied with Sarah ...

Re: Learned League 89 - May/Jun '21

I knew sinister was related to being left handed and I’ve seen the etymology of ambidextrous somewhere before but I didn’t think of that connection. Went from Spanish derecha to Derek. Kicking myself for missing Dexter and Venice. I got you beat ... I had droite (French), destra (Italian), and dere...

ETA--Apparently India is the only right answer to Asian Literature & Drama $800, as Tagore wrote only the words/not the music to Bangladesh's national anthem. Still, that seems pretty deep for a second row clue. I'm curious how teapot37 fared with it. Mention of the year it was written also pinned ...

The only thing that was at all offputting was her reminding us repeatedly that she’s a PhD neuroscientist.
By saying so explicitly?
I think her commercial is affecting people's memory. Otherwise I wonder if one or other of us was watching a different show.

Sodium bicarbonate = baking soda has long been something I've known. The terms feel close to interchangeable to me, but with sodium bicarbonate as an ingredient and not the whole thing, I knew powder was the correct choice.

   :(   :( Sotomayor replaced Souter, and that was my guess (although I didn't know that fact for sure). If I had thought of Kavanaugh, I would have come up with Kennedy and known it was right. Less than 24 hours after the Owen clue aired (local...

Pretty bad. Constant off screen giggling was weird & she is not attractive. Plus she has some big pharma ads running which adds to the overkill. She was okay on BBT but enough is enough.
What are your opinions on the other hosts' attractiveness?

I don't understand all the hand wringing about Ankit's wager amount. He missed the freaking question. He also said (lifted from MB's hard work): (Ankit: Don't love the category, so just a thousand, please.) (Mayim: All right, I won't take it personally.) [Laughter] ... (Ankit: What is Reykjavik?) (...

I'm not even sure why Becky said the same thing on the $1,600 Biblical Broadway clue when the champ got it wrong.
Becky got it wrong first, then Mara repeated her with a pronunciation correction.

Sotomayor/Souter here, which is at least alliterative. I need to add "Who replaced which Supreme Court justice" to my anki deck. That might not have helped, since Sotomayor replaced Souter. (I also said that.) The lemming effect strikes again: Mara may well have had a lock if she hadn't tried corre...

Re: Learned League 89 - May/Jun '21

I thought of Sopranos first, but I thought a couple of those titles were a little light-hearted for what I understood that show to be, so I guessed Schitt's Creek instead (imagining "Pine Barrens" to befit the podunk town setting of the show).

I certainly know what you are talking about if you pronounce it with the ending as if it were spelled itis instead of itus, but I would never pronounce it that way myself.
How do you pronounce "detritus"?
