Re: Wednesday, September 23, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I was a little surprised that they didn't BMS for "Tampa Bay" as a team. There was a team name ("Patriots"), not a city, state, or region name, referenced in the clue. There are three professional "Tampa Bay" teams in the Big Four ("Bucks"/Buccaneers, "Bolts"/Lightning, and Rays), and the name of t...

Re: 2020 Jeopardy North American Audition Tour

United Airlines has a destination guide with an interactive map https://www.united.com/ual/en/us/fly/travel/restrictions-map.html This shows no restrictions for most states, including California. So what type of rule does California have that is restricting out-of-staters from competing on Jeopardy...

Re: Final Jeopardy! Clues

US CITIES This city's sister cities include Chongqing, China; Toyota, Japan; and Turin, Italy. What is Detroit? I really enjoy these, but my sense is that they're too hard for regular play. I could be wrong. Maybe you could run a poll or two with 8 to 16 of your FJs. In Season 35, boardies respondi...

Re: Tuesday, September 22, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

do you believe that they should accept any abbreviation at any level of specialization or obscurity, provided there is a single attestation to it somewhere? I think that would be the summary of my position, yes, with the proviso that the abbreviation must, of course, be unambiguous within the scope...

Neither is your rule. Unless you're saying we should accept any abbreviation that anyone uses in any capacity. I've explained that I draw the line at specialist abbreviations vs those used by everyone when talking about the subject. Surely you can understand that even if you disagree. All you're do...

Re: Tuesday, September 22, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I don't understand under what consistency of rules you can accept "US" for United States but not "TH" for Thailand. I think the ad hoc rule you actually have in your head is "I don't see that very often myself, or have never seen it, and therefore I would not accept it." The rule isn't based on any...

Re: Tuesday, September 22, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

What can I say but that I disagree? And that I would have accepted Se for Sweden and Ca for Canada. If you would have accepted "U.S. and Ca." (and how could you not?), why not "US and Ca"? I'm with Opus (actually, I guess I'm far stricter than Opus). Use of abbreviations is sloppy and lazy and shou...

Re: Tuesday, September 22, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

- Th should not be accepted, any more than Se or Ca should work for Sweden and Canada. Why? In what other context are Final Jeopardy responses case-sensitive? If the correct question were "What is Tennessee?", wouldn't "What is Tn?" (or for that matter, "What is tN?") be accepted? I'm not making a ...

Re: Tuesday, September 22, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

For the $400 J round clue in the right hand column, the category name could've been WESTWARD "HO"! I'm disappointed we didn't get AMERICANS IN PARIS in the J round followed up by AMERICANS IN PAIRS in the DJ round. The latter category would, of course, include a clue about George and Ira Gershwin. S...

Tyler found DD3 at clue 23 with a category and two $2000 clues remaining. Dana: 23600 Tyler: 11200 Reshima: 3600 What to do? What to do? Tyler lost $4000 to have Dana in place for a lock. Tyler managed to do enough in the last 7 clues to prevent the runaway. Actually, he didn't. If Dana hadn't help...

Any known boardie who normally has access to the show can PM me to talk about their preemption woes. I can't offer a shoulder to cry on because penguins don't have shoulders, but I could let you into a secret bunker where you can try to forget your troubles.

Re: Thursday, September 17, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

That was a serious misfire on Strauss. He's Pavlovian for waltzes, and David seemed so confident in that category, too. Yeah, that was puzzling. Strauss = Waltz King is pretty basic classical knowledge. If he hadn't gone on to pick up $2000 on a Mahler clue, I'd have said he didn't know the categor...

Phosphine has been found in the atmosphere of Venus which might be a signature of potential life as, on Earth, it only comes from biological sources. https://gizmodo.com/scientists-detect-apparent-signature-of-life-in-venus-s-1845051001 I've heard that (*koff koff*) penguin droppings are especially...

Re: Thursday, September 17, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

One thing that got me to the correct response was that the two names in the clue seemed like new world names--Orozco in particular. This is also what got me to the correct name. +1 Beethoven instead of Tchaikovsky I went with Tchaikovsky because the clue mentioned someone named Pasternak. Only Past...

It hit me later that my "pick-a-Spaniard" was not accurate though the result was fine. One thing that got me to the correct response was that the two names in the clue seemed like new world names--Orozco in particular. I don't know if that observation is justified, but it was certainly my instinct....

$6200 from TSs, correct on DD2 and DD3. Would have probably still lost when I matched David's answer of Davy Crockett (though I spell it without the "E").
Davy Crocktt?
