Re: Tuesday, March 24, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

When the clue said "Bad version of Batman" I tried to think of the name of the Nite Owl character, who is a bad version of Batman. Not a bad guess - comic book nerds would know that Owlman is the Earth-3 version of Batman. Earth-3 is where the DC heroes and villains are reversed - Superman is Ultra...

For what it's worth, 1997 led me to China right away; the "one country, two systems" only confirmed my answer.

Re: Tuesday, February 25, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Actually, looking it up, since they were introduced at the same time and place in Cincinnati 1962...could this FJ! have two correct responses? I don't see anything that pins one over the other. I'd say that "Catholics" and "Lent" peg it for something that has fish in it. Many Catholic churches have...

Re: Monday, February 17, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I'll confess - I hadn't really looked closely at the category for FJ! - SCREEN TO STAGE. The reverse seems far more common. Oh, and as a coda, Waitress actually closed on Broadway recently - although I'm pretty sure it's still touring, and I think I remember reading something about Barellies subbin...

Re: Final Jeopardy! Clues

This is probably too obscure to be actually used, but when I stumbled across the fact I just couldn't resist. Category: US Vice Presidents He was the only 19th century veep to serve two full terms as Vice President (I'm not sure that adding the years he served and/or which which president he served...

Huh, go figure. Around here, 10th grade is World History, 11th is American History. At least it was in the stone age when I was in school.
Ha! In my day it was Pangaea history followed by Gondwanaland history!

Re: Online Test Recap & Discussion (Central), January 29, 2020

How did "round 2" work? Twice I passed round 1 and received messages on my answering machine from the show saying that since I wasn't home to receive the call my spot in the next round was going to someone else. (After the second of these messages I got a cell phone, but alas, never got another cal...

Re: Online Test Recap & Discussion (Eastern), January 28, 2020

Fairly certain I got 42, which is my best performance in recent memory! A few tip-of-my-fingers (Valhalla, Dodgers) and one I wrote read too fast (Orion for Sagittarius), but otherwise felt pretty strong. One that I kicked myself for missing was Jaffa, knowing that from somewhere in the recesses of...

Re: 2020 Online Test announced - Jan 28, 29, 30

Looking at this week's contestant lineup on jeopardy.com, all the men appearing on the show have a beard. So if you want to get on and you don't have one, you know what you need to do! Well that explains why I didn't get the call yet...that must be it. Trust me, that isn't it. I've auditioned with ...

Re: Online Test Recap & Discussion (Eastern), January 28, 2020

Put me down for 43. I missed the Hawking question (put Sagan just to say something), chose the wrong wife for Henry VIII (Jane Seymour), lost the coin flip on Byron/Tennyson, couldn't remember E.L. James (knew "E.L" but knew it wasn't Doctorow), no idea on Ariana Grande, had no idea on the reference...

I feel pretty good about this one - a couple of 50:50:90s that I hope I got right and a couple that were total mysteries to me.

Re: Wednesday, January 22, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I got the right FJ! answer but for the wrong reason. I thought that the U.S. had been given the USVI by Great Britain in WWI, so it would make sense that they would drive on the same side of the road as England. Turns out that we got the USVI from Denmark. Oh, well, I'll take it.

Re: ABC Plays Keepaway

The idea of letting millionaires play Who Wants to Be a Millionaire doesn't sit right with me. Like, if there should be one precondition for being a contestant, it should be not already being a millionaire . A fun version would be if they used billionaires instead, and they all competed to avoid ha...
