Re: 2019 TOC Updates

Good point. I totally forgot about her thesis.

Re: 2019 TOC Updates

The seven 4-time winners who didn't make the cut this time are going to be in the next TOC, right? I assume they were notified of this. So I don't understand why Emma would be taking a spot away from a deserving person if that person (and six others) will get the opportunity to play again next year...

Re: 2019 TOC Updates

Further ruminations: 1. The point about deferred eligibility makes it sound like no one's getting bumped, but that's nonsense. If they're not bumping someone from this pool, that just means they're bumping someone from the next. You can't add in a non-eligible player and not have it affect someone ...

Re: 2019 TOC Updates

This also kind of reminds me of KJ not getting to play in a regular ToC. I didn't agree with that decision, either. I liked the UToC, but he shouldn't have gotten a bye into the finals. Anyway, aside from James and Emma the only contestant in this lineup who I have seen play is Josh Hill. Working 2 ...

Re: 2019 TOC Updates

Larry Martin is still on the ToC tracker. Does anyone know how many past contestants were in line between Lindsey and Emma? I'm also curious to see what the cutoff for the ToC after the next one will be, but I think it's only fair that TPTB use the game that airs immediately before the first QF game...

Re: Monday, July 1, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Yeah, wow, geography is my best category but I never in a million years would have gotten that one. It makes sense in hindsight, but I wouldn't have known how to connect the dots.

Re: LL81: LearnedLeague

My thinking on the drugs question: "sartan sounds like statin. What do statin drugs treat. Ugh, I can't remember, but whatever it is it probably isn't right anyway. I'll say epilepsy." My only other miss was Breakfast at Tiffany's. I've never liked Seinfeld, but the question made me think of Nelson ...

Re: LL81: LearnedLeague

Okay, I have worked at Publix part time on and off for several years, and now that I looked it up I have definitely seen Ritter Sport sold on the international aisle there. But it's not a major enough product here that I was going to remember it.

Re: LL81: LearnedLeague

I way overthought the pop art question. Jasper Johns should have made it easy, but it seemed too obvious. I said Op Art, which was way off the mark. Tory should have been easy as well, but I locked in on "hooligan" and just never considered anything else. I should have paid more attention to the pol...

Thomas Paine on Thursday. I am really surprised that there was no FJ on some pop culture thing that I'm out of touch with, though that may be coming next week.

Re: LL81: LearnedLeague

Strange result for me yesterday, as I won 9(5)-5(2). I wasn't expecting to have another day with more than 4 correct for the remainder of this season, but I'll take it. The Australia question was a no-brainer for the 3-pointer, but my opponent, a career .264 Geography player, knew it. All I could co...

Re: LL81: LearnedLeague

That was a brutal set yesterday, but 2 correct is enough to win when your opponent forfeits. I got prison on a complete guess. It was the first thing that came to mind for the title facility of a TV show. I might have gotten Reichstag if I had RTFQ, but for some reason I only thought of U.S. buildin...

Re: LL81: LearnedLeague

I won with 1 correct yesterday. Thank goodness that the educated guess worked out on Navajo. I saw "Nickelodeon reboot" and locked in on All That. True, I watched All That back in the day and didn't recognize the names, but I thought that they could have been from the later seasons. Math is my best ...

Re: LL81: LearnedLeague

First ever Buckner win yesterday 3(1)-2(3)...so many Koin flips... Luxembourg/Switzerland (although I thought only Switz had Cantons as noted above). Buffalo/Cleveland...turns out Buffalo is only 350 miles from NY, but I have been there several times and knew it was a major shipping center around 1...

Re: LL81: LearnedLeague

I won with 2 correct (12 Angry Men, Cleveland) yesterday, but I had 3 really bad misses. I was tying to think of an organ that starts with "t," but I had nothing. I honestly never knew that glands were considered organs. Then "canton" was Pavlov for Switzerland, which seemed too obvious, but I reall...

Re: LL81: LearnedLeague

I definitely did not pick up on the "sooner" hint in the clue. That was a clever bit of writing by the Commish. And I have probably heard at some point what radar stands for, but that was never going to come to me. I was shocked at how low the get rate on museum was when spotted "nine" in the clue. ...

Re: LL81: LearnedLeague

I have an econ degree and don't remember ever hearing the name David Ricardo. The 6% on grisaille I can believe, but I'm skeptical of 14% knowing Ricardo (especially with almost double that on the MCWA (among them, mine)). But my opponent thought I would, so I did manage to take down my rundle's le...

Re: LL81: LearnedLeague

I managed to win with only 2 correct and move up to third place (in the promotion zone) of my rundle, but yeah, yesterday was a fall back down to earth. I knew Porter cold (though I sometimes confuse her with Edna Ferber and had to read the clue carefully to make sure I had the right one) and Liverp...

Re: LL81: LearnedLeague

I am usually good at the quiz bowl centric clues but I had never heard of Marat/Sade, though Peter Weiss does ring a faint bell. I had no good guess, so I went with Hansel. I got the other five. Lonely Planet was an educated guess, as I seem to remember a teacher or professor showing some of the vid...

Re: LL81: LearnedLeague

I recognized Kachenjunga as what I thought was the third highest mountain in the world. I didn't recognize that name for K2 so I thought that maybe I had been wrong and the former was the 4th highest, so I went with K2. I couldn't have told you an alternate name for Everest, but I knew that K2 was a...
