Re: Wednesday, June 7, 2017 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]

I had a vague idea that England conquering Wales (and/or Scotland) might have been around the 1300s, and also that the first few Edwards were around the 1300s. (I also had a vague idea that the last Welsh person to have the name "Prince of Wales" might have been around the 1300s.) I also considered ...

Re: Monday, June 5, 2017 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]

My gut reaction to both of them is to call them "ambiguous" rather than "true" or "false".

I'd want people everywhere to rephrase. "Canada's southern border is with the US." "The northern border of the US touches Canada."

Re: Monday, June 5, 2017 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]

By any chance, were any of you like me, and were you aided on FJ by knowledge of big cats?

I knew that the "Amur leopard" is a type of leopard that lives in Northern Asia.

Coincidentally, my first two precalls based just on the category were "El Al Airlines" and "Trans-Siberian Railway".

Re: Thursday, June 1, 2017 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]

This FJ stumped me at first, and I wrote down "Port Stanley" without a ton of confidence. I know Stanley is an explorer, and I had a vague notion that "Port Stanley" might be the name of some city somewhere. I thought about it a bit longer, since I wasn't even sure there is an African capital called...

Re: Wednesday, May 24, 2017 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]

I liked the FJ category. It was a nice birthday present. My precalls during the commercial break included St. Bernard (named for a saint who has a mountain pass named after him), Chihuahua (small dog named for a large Mexican state), Great Pyrenees (named for a mountain range between France & Spain)...

Re: Friday, May 19, 2017 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]

When the FJ category was given, I said to Naurae29 that it would be funny if the clue were something like "In 1860, this was the most populous city in what would become the Confederate States of America." (That was a clue in Learned League earlier this week.) I was mostly joking, but Naurae29 then p...

Re: Wednesday, May 17, 2017 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]

Based only on the category, my precall for FJ was "The Gilded Age".

"Reconstruction" was also one of the top two or three choices we came up with during our commercial break brainstorming.

Re: Tuesday, April 25, 2017 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]

I only got 4 out of 5 in the dog breeds category. :(

(I missed Saluki, so it was probably appropriately placed at the bottom. I've heard the name before, and if you had told me "Saluki" I might have guessed that it was from a warm or arid part of the world, but I couldn't come up with it.)

Re: Monday, April 17, 2017 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]

I went from Calhoun to South Carolina and from there to Clemson, but had low confidence in it. I stuck with it because I had nothing else. This is pretty much me. I'll admit that I got confused by the South America clue. I know the relevant facts, but I just had trouble processing the clue in real ...

Re: FJs for the 4/10/17 week

An interesting week for me:      :( :( :( I clammed on Vonnegut's "Monkey", but might have guessed that on a DD if I was forced to. Didn't figure out Athens quickly enough. It makes sense that it would have three named ports, but I didn't recognize the na...

Re: Friday, April 14, 2017 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]

Spoilered because it mentions an FJ from earlier this week. I was worried throughout tonight's FJ. I wrote down "Switzerland" because it seemed like the best fit, but part of me was thinking "It can't be Switzerland because that's too similar to yesterday's FJ." I still stuck with it though, because...

Re: Thursday, April 13, 2017 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]

I thought Lee resembled a young Dick Van Dyke. This FJ, for me, was a good example of an "instaguess". The Red Cross was one of several different things Naurae29 and I mentioned while brainstorming during the commercial break. Other things included the Olympic Rings, the peace sign, the Euro symbol,...

Re: Wednesday, April 12, 2017 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]

I first wrote down "The Omen" for FJ, but came very close to switching to "The Exorcist". I think both are very reasonable guesses if you don't know the exact year those movies came out (I don't). I did know that they were both 1970s films.

Knew I wouldn't be the only one with that pattern.

I have seen Hockney's name in the past, but couldn't remember it on Tuesday.

Re: Wednesday, March 29, 2017 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]

No guess on FJ! This seemed very YEKIOYD. How the hell was it a triple get?! They all knew it. How? This seems like a very arcane obscure fact. It's a common word that's been used in lots of other contexts. It's like asking what the guy had for breakfast that day. That's how I guessed it. I just tr...

Re: Wednesday, March 29, 2017 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]

I had similar thoughts to some of you. The category made me think the correct response would be some neologism like "Brexit".

I guessed the correct response, but it was more "think of a regular word that seems appropriate that also is 8 letters".

Posting in case it's helpful (I needed to look this up just now to remind myself) Battle of Gettysburg: took place over three days in Pennsylvania in July 1863. Deadliest battle of the war. Battle of Antietam: took place on a single day in Maryland in September 1862. Deadliest single-day battle of t...

Re: Learned League 72 - Official Thread

Congrats! I need four to tie and five to break my record. I ended up with four correct to tie my best TCA with 114. That's the fifth time in 13 seasons I've gotten 114 TCA. How weird is that? I am continually impressed by the consistency of the overall difficulty level from one season to the next (...

Re: Learned League 72 - Official Thread

I set a personal record for correct answers in a season, and I'm also pleased to have done well in two of my worst categories. I went 6 for 7 in Business and Economics (my worst category) and 10 for 11 in Food and Drink (my fourth worst category).
