Re: Learned League 72 - Official Thread
I am pleased to report that I broke my personal record for total correct answers in a season, with one match day still to come!

Part of what helped me get this FJ is that the name "Quantico" kind of sounds a little like "Squanto", but there may very well be no etymological relationship whatsoever. It's one of those things where superficial reasoning is good enough.

Robin and I were at the same audition in Charleston, SC, in October. We chatted briefly in the hallway before the audition, and then we happened to be in the same mock game. So that was almost me you saw on the middle podium up there.
It was a pleasant surprise to see her on the show today.

Re: Wednesday, March 22, 2017 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
Bah, Monet and Manet. I get those two mixed up. Their styles are distinctive enough, but their names aren't, and I always forget which is which :P. This is definitely not foolproof, but one possible mnemonic is: picture of a m A n or wom A n = M a net picture of an O bject (like trees or flowers or...

Re: Learned League 72 - Official Thread
The only other Jewish holidays I could name are Purim (which I know has something to do with Esther and Persia, and the clue didn't mention those, plus if I were forced to guess, I might guess that Purim was older than 165 BCE) and Sukkot, which honestly in my mind is just "that other Jewish holida...

Good FJ - never heard of that special but what else could it be? Still, good on Madeline and Emlen for putting something down; they were on the right track, at least. It was a great clue. I'd nominate it for the best FJ of the season, even though we're only half way through. I was somewhat surprise...

Re: Learned League 72 - Official Thread
I don't know whether to be surprised or not on the 54% get for Chanukah. It's such an easy question for me that I have no idea how easy it would be for gentiles. Most of my defense is based on gut on "is this a hard question whether I know it or not" and that gut is almost always right, but this on...

Re: Learned League 72 - Official Thread
This is only the second math question I've ever missed. I just read skullturf's solution (posted elsewhere); turns out that Calculus II methods are enough to get close, but you need more high-powered machinery to distinguish (rigorously) between two plausible lines of reasoning that lead to the cor...

I'm another who responded "Ipanema" rather than "Rio de Janeiro".
I think I was once informed that Ipanema was just a neighborhood in Rio, but I didn't remember that tonight.

 :(   Brainstorming during the commercial break on Tuesday got me thinking about the Peace of Westphalia and the Thirty Years' War, among other things. Then, when the clue mentioned a year in the 16teens, that seemed to confirm my Thirty Years' War idea, and I co...

Annie's wager...I guess she just wanted more money. I guess she just didn't know much about FJ wagering strategy from the get go. I wonder if/when she found out she threw away close to $4,000 in her first game. I kind of disagree she threw away money. She had a lock and wasn't playing with house mo...

Re: Learned League 72 - Official Thread
I have 3 wins in my last 6 matches, but in each of those 3 wins, I had the same number of correct answers as my opponent and just defended better. It's satisfying to get on a roll like that. I need to be good on defense in order to succeed in my rundle.

Re: Learned League 72 - Official Thread
I played against ChernicoffS yesterday. Although I lost my match, I'm proud of the way I defended. I deliberately made the (normally risky) move of assigning 3 points to the Brie Larson question. Sure enough, he got all of them except that one. I didn't have the slightest clue on Tonton Macoute, but...

Re: Monday, March 6, 2017 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
it was almost easier to deduce the proper reading of the clue from the correct response than the other way around. I had very similar thoughts. The correct response happened to come quickly (thinking about changing borders in the 1990s meant that I started around Yugoslavia) but then, once the two ...

   :( Wrote down "Carroll" on Thursday without a ton of confidence. Re: Friday, March 3, 2017 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
Tonight's FJ was one of those that seems very obvious with hindsight, but I didn't get it right. I put down Carroll just to have something. Heh. Technically this is a mild spoiler for an earlier game this week, but for Thursday's FJ, where we had to name a Marylander that something was named after,...

Re: Learned League 72 - Official Thread
There are many correct ways to figure out what 36 times 36 is. I used more than one method, because we have tons of time to think about LL questions, and I would be really embarrassed if I got an easy LL math question wrong (I am a mathematician). I understand why people would say "Why not 'just' mu...

Some LLamas on Facebook said they guessed "forgeries" for the art question.
Sometimes, something just pops into your head as an attractive first guess, and just stays there.

Re: Timing of Audition Invite Emails
My two cents on the question of whether one should "study" before an audition: One shouldn't *cram* before an audition, and one shouldn't stress out about trivia knowledge before the audition. Anyone auditioning almost certainly already has enough trivia knowledge to do well at the audition. But I w...
