Re: Monday, February 18, 2013 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]

The earlier seasons of Jeopardy were way, way easier compared to today, I think. Whenever I'm refreshing the main page of the archive to look at the random FJs, I can usually tell if it's from a really old season based on the difficulty. Take, for instance, the triple-zero game of episode #2, with i...

Re: Wednesday, February 20, 2013 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]

Congratulations to Kristin on making the finals! I know she had won when I saw her (and Dave) stop writing so soon after the music started. That exhale during the side to side pan gave it away too. Congrats to Dave and Jason for making it that far as well, it's not easy. Btw, did anybody else notic...

Re: Tuesday, February 19, 2013 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]

My wife, also a Chem prof, was a bit confused that the clue was worded as a plural, but thermodynamics does end in s, doesn't it? *nod* I mentioned that above. I'm not sure why they though that thermodynamics is the plural of thermodynamic. Physics isn't the plural of physic, it is? I believe the B...

It's worth knowing that Millard Fillmore was the last person from the Whig party to be president.

How fortuitous your name turned out to be! ;)
I admit I was relieved when they said that :)

Re: Tuesday, February 12, 2013 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]

I agree, Joon. I think he goofed on the math, and he's trying to play it off as being confident rather than admit his mistake. What if Nilai had been a military history buff (as I was, even at that age), and had known it? This is Jeopardy, after all, and even in the Teen Tournament, you're not going...

Re: Tuesday, February 19, 2013 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]

Jason and Stephanie, did the producers let you watch all the semifinal games, or did they make a policy change after the teen tournament? I played in the first semifinal game, but if I remember right, the other semifinalists weren't sequestered prior to their games, although Maggie did tell us abou...

Re: Thursday, February 14, 2013 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]

If "you know it or you don't" were the whole point of Jeopardy!, then clues would never have TOMs. Not saying they all have to, nor am I saying this one's unfair. Even clues with TOMs still require some bit of knowledge in order to make use of the TOM. And that's something you either know or you do...

Re: Tuesday, February 19, 2013 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]

The idea behind wagering small is to improve your shot at a WC on a get while minimizing the damage on a miss. If you wager big and miss, you're toast. If you wager small and miss, then you still have a chance. So unless your get rate on FJs is very high, you're better off playing the odds and betti...

That's what osculation means.
So it's either "you know it or you don't". And I didn't.
Isn't that the whole point of Jeopardy, though?

Regarding the previous question: The Coast Guard Academy is the one in New London, but the Merchant Marine Academy is smaller both in campus size and in enrollment (albeit ever so slightly).

Re: 2013 TOC Wild Card standings (Game 4 Results Included)

Yeah, I was feeling pretty good after QF3. What were the chances that all four non-winners in the final two games would beat my score? Not very likely, I thought.

And then I was beaten rather handily by Dan and Kristin, which meant I was sweating out that final QF game.

Jason Shore. You may have seen me on your TV fairly recently. For those of you who DVR the show and skip the contestant blurbs during each show (as I do), I'm 26, a med student at the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine, a 2d Lt in the USAFR, and I am a proud graduate of Texas A&M University. Remembering the former Soviet republics is easy: ELLBUMGAATTURKK (pronounced ell-BUM-ga-turk!). It's the first letter of each, roughly in geographical order starting up by the Gulf of Finland and going counter-clockwise: E stonia, L atvia, L ithuania, B elarus, U kraine, M oldova, G eorgia, A rmenia...
