Re: Millionaire 2017-18 Season Discussion [SPOILERS]

I loved watching Jason make his run – he played the game the way it was meant to be played. Too bad Scrabble isn't his jam!
For what it's worth,
I would have triple-checked my math on the $100k question, possibly mixing it up by not counting letters that appeared in every name (like a single 'c')

Re: Millionaire 2017-18 Season Discussion [SPOILERS]

Exactly. I don't know how she talked herself out of Argentina. I didn't know Maurice (the pompatus of love), but silver should have nailed it. It was at least worth 50/50 to see if those were the two left. I was waffling between port and pale, and probably would have gotten suckered by the audience...

Two rulings for the judges: 14th CENTURY $800: "The intellectual Charles the Wise of France founded the Blbiotheque du Roi, which translates to this". … I thought that "Royal Library" sounded better as a library name, would it be acceptable? IRISH STEW $2000: "At 1014's Battle of Clontarf, this Iri...

Re: Learned League 74 - Official Thread

The term "good-sounding" was way too weird not to be a giveaway. (Thanks, EugeneF, for your frequent lessons on the derivation of your name.)

Sheesh, Vermonter, it was a little rude of you not to share your beer.

Congratulations, sir. I definitely ran out of 0s and 1s when assigning defense, so I feel slightly validated.
Beers on me next time we see each other!

I am sure if I had just put down the full title, I'd have gotten credit.
I got credit for "(the last) temptation of christ"

Although leaving an answer blank… tsk tsk :)

Got a lucky tie against cmp146 yesterday – our first draw in six matches (she leads, 3-2). I shooed away my first instinct of Emmentaler and went with gruyere, but (rightly, I think) got 0 for it. Educated guess on surfboard for 3. Thought about giving the Canadian 3 for Alexander Stephens, but figu...

Re: Learned League 74 - Official Thread

I thought for sure the Jack and Beanstalk question would be 98%+, gave it a zero, then immediately found out (after we had all submitted) that 4 of my friends had missed it and I felt like an idiot. And then lost on defense because Vermonter, with a .765 sports, missed Dr. J and got everything else...

Re: Tuesday, July 11, 2017 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]

I guessed "pincer" on the controversial Shaka clue. Since the "flanking maneuver" Wikipedia page has "pincer movement" under the "See Also" heading, and the article for "pincer movement" says it's also known as "double envelopment," I think I'm good. As is often the case, a quote from Archer popped...

Re: Millionaire 2016-17 Season Discussion [SPOILERS]

You guys remember that promo clip the show used to run for its highlight videos? The one where Chris says "You did it." and the crowd starts going wild, as if it's a $1 million win?

When did that episode air? I'd been keeping an eye out but never saw it.

Re: 2017 World Quizzing Championships

It was my first time, and a lot of fun. Great to see so many new and old friends! I got an 85; I imagine I'll do better next year with some familiarity of the question styles. Highlights: 9th century Italian Count question: the paper I was grading had "Chocula" as the answer (of course I asked Tony ...

I also always get confused which one Guiteau shot, McKinley or Garfield.
For the record, Guiteau shot Garfield.
And Czolgolz sounds like it could be near Denali

Presidential Bio DD - what was the TOM? Saw no way to narrow it down. The category felt tougher for J round. During Hoover's time in office, the Boulder Dam (dedicated 3 years after he got the boot) was nicknamed for him because of his engineering accomplishments. Or that was the justification for ...

Re: Millionaire 2016-17 Season Discussion [SPOILERS]

It feels like just knowing the existence and title of any show airing on primetime network tv in the last year is probably fair game for most trivia game shows. Yes there are a zillion cable channels and umpteen streaming services, but this is one of the big 3. If you haven't heard of the show and ...
