Re: The Official TPH Education Thread (POTENTIAL GAME DAY SPOILERS)

"Wings" strikes me as one of those "firsts" that seems noteworthy only for its "first"ness, rather than for being an actual thing. Sort of like how nobody really knows "Video Killed the Radio Star" for anything other than "first video aired on MTV". ...and with that second sentence you've just give...

Re: Tuesday, March 6, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

My British spouse and I were cockily confident that we'd instaget FJ... He went for Gulliver, despite my telling him immediately that Swift was Irish, but I had no guess. Like others, we simply didn't associate "Classic" novels with something written in the 20th century. Orwell, Woolf, Fitzge...

I'd imagine Frankenstein will poll high. That image is about all one usually remembers from it. If I am reading the tea leaves right we're at 12/13 for 92%. It was 2/3 on the show for 66%. Split the difference and that is 79%. I'll take under 80% in the poll while taking over 70%. Narrowing it down...

Also didn't recognize any of those Sports films at all. Battle of the Sexes = tennis felt especially obscure. The movie was based on a true story of a tennis match between a man and a woman. It was held at the height of the women's lib movement and the man in the match played the sexist pig role to...

Since I'm noticing people uncertain about Kensington Gardens... notwithstanding Kensington Market in Toronto, Kensington is definitely a huge London (UK) tip-off. The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea is one of the most affluent areas of the city and has very high-value real estate as well as ...

Re: Friday, February 16, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

Perambulator is often shortened to pram. I don't know if that would be more helpful to people knowing what that word means. I was way off with my guess here, and it's pretty funny. First thought was of Paddington Bear, but I didn't know any fictional places associated with him. That went to Winnie ...

The contestants going 0/5 in the "Talking Football" category was mentioned on the NBC Nightly News tonight.
And it's been on the top half of the front page of the CNN website for days:

Re: Wednesday FJ (and one Thursday) extended poll

Where's the box for "I've never heard of Ore-Ida"? Not there because I thought we could figure that out on our own. I.e. if 90% have heard of it, then 10% haven't. I forgot the lesson we learned recently: boardies who can't check any of the boxes are effectively barred from taking the poll. As far ...

Re: Wednesday FJ (and one Thursday) extended poll

Where's the box for "I've never heard of Ore-Ida"? I had figured out that it had to be related to potato products (Idaho) and concluded that the response must be a play on the state names somehow, but beyond that I was completely lost. Even looking up the company afterwards left me none the wiser; I...

Speaking of which, I will submit a poll request for "I've never even heard of Ore-Ida". Thanks ahead of time, Mark. There are two of you already in this thread and I'm shocked by that. On the other hand based on the 1/15 poll 11% have never eaten a Triscuit and I wouldn't have ever guessed that eit...

Did any other fellow Canadians totally eat it on this FJ? Had forgotten that burning the draft card was a thing, knew flag was too obvious (and the "altering" didn't make sense in that context) and left grasping for options. Wish that if I were at a podium I could have had the guts to say "grilled ...

Re: Friday, January 26, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion [SPOILERS]

The FJ! clue stopped my streak at 7 right in what should have been a good category for me. Instead the writers threw me a curve with something I’ve never read. I’ve seen parts of a movie or two, but not enough to help with recognizing the middle names. I can't complain that the clue needed more sin...

Re: On Potent Potables

How about, on DDs, Alex says "Only $x" in response to the player's bet.

And surely there can be rules for sponsored/product placement rounds, or video rounds where Alex appears in costume, eg at a theatre.

Is it just me, or did Adrianne say " A Pilgrim's Progress"? If so, she should have been negged. There is plenty of precedent for getting articles on book titles wrong. As a Russian, I would have accepted Gerard's "Belorussia", since the first part is how it's actually pronounced in those countries....

You proved otherwise on Wheel. You just don't have as good an aptitude for Jeopardy. But there's no shame in that. The people here have a much higher aptitude for Jeopardy than an overwhelming percentage of the population. All we ask is that you realize that, and keep that in mind when you post on ...

Tricky FJ as Warner just isn't in the news very much. Unless you live in VA or the DC area, or are a political junkie - I'm guessing this polls fairly low and I'm not surprised none of the contestants got it. Gilbert did a good job to come up with an actual name to counter Kaine - pretty impressive...

Re: The Official TPH Education Thread (POTENTIAL GAME DAY SPOILERS)

"Auld" = old = not new, so not New Year's Day. No coin necessary. I'm not so sure about that. Auld Lang Syne is generally sung after midnight at a New Year's party. I'd be reluctant to ring in and guess whether that's considered Eve or Day. What season is foggy? I guessed autumn, but like "a great ...
