Re: FJs for the 1/2/17 week
:( :( :( Yuck. I guess I really should read Lord of the Flies since the writers love it so much; somehow I never had to read it in school. So no clue on Piggy. Instaget on Prague but not sure why; probably the similarity to Vaclav Havel. And I picked TCM over DK because I felt th...

Re: Friday, January 6, 2017 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
How do you come up with Deuteronomy? YEKIOYD? or do you assume Moses's story has to end in the last of the first 5 books? I would have said Exodus, but I would have only lost $5. I always come back to L a ND = L eviticus, N umbers, D euteronomy to remember the order of the last 3 books of the 5 Boo...

Re: FJs for the 12/26/16 week
Knew Nash and "A Beautiful Mind" (read the book recently), but the wording of FJ said to me that the person had to be mentioned by name in the title. If I had been a contestant, I would have been furious at this chicanery.

Count me on the side of those who think the wording of FJ was dishonest.

I never seem to remember the Bahamas. And I was never going to get from the White City to the Emerald City. But the Tom Wolfe FJ on Monday was an instaget.

Instaget FJ; knew that one of the two had to be Phelps, and knew he was a Marylander.
Epically bad DD wagering from Julia, especially the last - as bad as I've seen lately given how far ahead she was and how little was left on the board.

Re: Monday, December 19, 2016 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
Have to say it: instaget FJ. Seriously, Radical Chic is one of Wolfe's most famous essays, and is paired with the just as famous Mau-Mauing the Flak Catchers in the book title, so I'm just surprised that so few people so far got it. It was clear that the contestants were struggling with it...

Re: FJs for the 12/12/16 week
Horrible FJ week for me. Steinbeck was an instaget, but that was it for my week. Figured Monday was either Newton or Halley, and went with Newton because of his well-known obsession with the Bible and mysticism. Knew El Salvador on Friday but not Belize. No idea on Santiago or Mad Men - I'm still ti...

Re: Wednesday, December 14, 2016 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
Instaget FJ. Ran the novels category. There just haven't been that many quintessentially American winners of the literature Nobel (e.g., TS Eliot spent most of his life in Britain), which might have helped this general category; it's not that many to memorize. But I knew that Steinbeck won in '62 an...

Re: Friday, December 9, 2016 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
Was this a bad DVR week for anybody else? My local Jeopardy station is an NBC affiliate, and Wednesday night got pre-empted for the "Hairspray Live" preview, on Thursday night the football game ran long and my local station ran its news program instead of Jeopardy, and Friday night simply didn't rec...

Re: FJs for the 12/5/16 week
Guessed Conan Doyle on Tuesday, although I was pretty sure he only wrote four novels. Knew it wasn't Dickens as he wrote way more than six. Did not even think of Austen. Went with Garamond for the typeface, although I was pretty sure it was incorrect even though it is old. Knew that Helvetica was a ...

Platinum was as good as I could come up with on the Dresden porcelain FJ; I was never going to get porcelain. A rough week for me - 3/5 FJs.

If memory serves me, the one you picked came out in 1967. 1969 was the year of Tommy, from which "Amazing Journey" would have worked title-wise but not lyric-wise.bpmod wrote:
I cannot name the exact years of release of many Who songs.

Re: Secondary Poll for the 10/27/16 FJ! clue [Spoilers]
It seems that I was the only one to guess a Who song. I'm very curious, which one? I'm a Who fanatic, and I'm having a hard time thinking of one I would have guessed if I hadn't had an instaget for Space Oddity . I might have gone with the Jeff Beck Group version of the Yardbirds' Shapes of Things ...

Re: FJs for the 10/24/16 week
Juliet Capulet was instaget, but Julius Caesar tripped me up because, although he's the title character, he dies early in the play and isn't the main character. But I still feel bad about it; my only FJ miss this week. The rest of the week - including echidna - were instagets.

Re: FJs for the 10/17/16 week
As good an FJ week as I've had in a while; all instagets although after immediately saying "Mel Brooks", I spent a few seconds wondering about Woody Allen, until I was convinced he did not have a Tony. We have Del Taco franchises where I live, but much less common than Taco Bell, and I've never gone...

Alex was quite the, uh...cad to Susan; hope he maybe winked or something to take the sting out. Winning big in a lock is the best revenge though.
Precalled the "Revelations" neg, but it almost seemed that it just slipped out from nervousness. I had no clue on FJ.

Re: Tuesday, October 11, 2016 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]
Took me about five seconds to get FJ, but I got there via the "city name as verb" route first, then it was obvious about the container port part. A bit surprised it was a TS, but the term "shanghaied" is seldom used nowadays; I probably remember it from '30s and '40s pulp novels (and maybe some Hein...

Re: Online Test Recap & Discussion (Pacific), October 6, 2016
41 here. Most conspicuous stupid misses were "Leaves of Grass" (I initially typed that then erased and switched to "I Sing the Body Electric"), "John Oliver" (could not remember his last name), and "Africa" (I put down N. America). The score is fairly average for me; a few years ago I did a 46 but h...
