 :( :(    Instaget on Monday; that one wasn’t the only time Lincoln was sarcastic about McClellan’s lack of initiative. Chalk up another Ben-Hur on Tuesday. In my defense, during my childhood when The Ten Commandments was a fixture on Sunday ni...

Re: Tuesday, April 28, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

As long as I've been alive, it seems that two movies are shown on network TV every blessed year, right around Passover/Easter. One is The Wizard of Oz and the other is The Ten Commandments. Hmmm...I seem to recall the Wizard of Oz showing up on CBS right after Thanksgiving every year when I was a t...

Re: TD 444 - 40 For 40 (Q1-Q2 revealed)

Your response of Toreros for question 2 is indeterminate. There are three NCAA schools in San Diego: the San Diego State University (SDSU) Aztecs, the University of California at San Diego (UCSD) Tritons, and the University of San Diego (USD) Toreros. Almost any San Diego resident, when asked about...

Re: Tuesday, April 28, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Every once in a while, it seems the game writers think something is so obvious that no research is needed only to be wrong. Today it was in the double-vowel category with the clue "What a plane is doing moving down a runway, preparing for take-off". I could not come up with anything with a double-v...

Re: Non-Jeopardy! related poll

“You have another think coming” has been in use for more than 150 years, and the use of “think” as a noun has been around for longer. Here’s a discussion: https://www.merriam-webster.com/words-a ... ing-coming

Re: Friday, April 24, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

^ that is not the answer I was looking for, and it would only be correct if Indianapolis has a professional sports team that reflects it being a manufacturing center for aircraft engines So? The city of Indianapolis has a sports team named after it - the Indianapolis Colts. It also has a RR (origin...

Instagets on Wednesday-Friday FJs. Instaget on Sinclair Lewis too, although I am not a fan - had to read Babbitt in college US History class, and have some passing familiarity with the rest of his oeuvre.

Re: Friday, April 24, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I worked for GE aircraft engines, the number one producer of aircraft engines on the planet. Most people don't know that number two is Rolls-Royce. And I wonder how many people could name a city where Rolls-Royce produces aircraft engines, which lent its name to a local sports team. Indianapolis, b...

Instaget FJ, in part because of information I remembered from The Case of the Roving Rolls, a wonderful Brains Benton mystery I read as an 8-year-old.

Suboptimal wager by Tim in that last DD.

Re: Tuesday, April 21, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

It wasn't until I bought fake books (sheet music with chords and lyrics) that I even knew Lennon and McCartney did all most the writing. I still don't know if one did lyrics and one did music in general but I assume they were pretty collaborative. After playing this music for 40 years, I am just di...

Re: Tuesday, April 21, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

I thought the George Harrison clue was bogus. Any reason I should know it was him, since Lennon and McCartney are far, far, FAR more known for their songwriting?! “Something” is probably George Harrison’s best known song, was covered far and wide (including by Sinatra and Elvis), and is critically ...

On FJ, I had to get Warren Zevon’s classic Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner quieted down in my head, then my thought process went Roland -> French knight? -> legend? -> Charlemagne? OK.

Heck, I’m atheist, but count me in among those who don’t see the issue with Bible clues. No different than sports clues - sports and religion are part of our cultural milieu and it doesn’t matter if I dislike them, they’re fair game. Its not a question of "like", its a question of percentage of cul...

Re: Friday, April 3, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)

Obviously FJ was between Hearst and Pulitzer, but I knew that William Randolph Hearst was the son of a man who had made it big in US precious metals mining (thanks to Deadwood!). So I figured that Pulitzer was the right choice.
