I suppose the genre of Young Adult literature came later, and their writing was contemporary with education levels at the time. I had a hard time parsing FJ: unclear whether the 18 miles was named, or if the state was named. I started trying to come up with names of coastlines, not names of states, and couldn’t get unstuck. Not one of the writers’ better outings IMHO.

Went to Island of Doctor Moreau pretty quickly; I’ve never read it or seen the movies but knew the general gist of the plot, knew it was British (H.G. Wells), and “house of pain” sounded plausible given the plot.
