Re: Contestant Tom Carroll

I know it's not 37 years, but I first auditioned in 1985 putting me at 29 years. :( Are you my twin brother lost at birth? I mean, Everyone I know thinks I've blurred the line between persevering and perseveration, after trying for 26 years (and counting). In all that time, counting the times when ...

Re: Friday, May 16, 2014 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]

I stand by the comment I made on 14/5 that led people to call me a troll. Roger's TDDs were nothing but pure hubris, and Roger isn't good enough to have hubris. BTW, I instagot Lake Winnipeg, and Roger's answer not only indicated a lack of geographical familiarity, but he also failed to understand ...

Re: Thursday, May 15, 2014 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]

It was a wrong answer. The FAFSA is not a college application, and nobody has ever been accepted to college just for mailing in a FAFSA. If Alex's answer sheet says "financial aid," wouldn't he glance to the judges when the player says "college application"? (Which we may not see on TV if it's edit...

Re: Thursday, May 15, 2014 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]

I was pleasantly surprised to see Roger holding his own on the buzzer against the most demonical buzzer demons of all time. And like the throng here, I applaud Roger's TDD decision. That had to be the percentage play given all the conditions: Roger's DD success rate, presumed underdog status, early ...

Re: Wednesday, May 14, 2014 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]

And the great games keep on rolling in! People talk about this being the closest of the 3 semifinals and by one measure that's true, but by another measure that's not. Since all three players had a chance to win going into FJ, it's reasonable to claim that this was closer than the Ken/Chuck/Russ gam...

Re: Timing of Audition Invite Emails

Has anybody heard anything about Philadelphia? I've always auditioned in NYC, but since it wasn't offered here this year, I put down Philly. Unless I missed them, there haven't been any posts about Philly auditions yet.

J1 was a daytime show that was watched by housewives during that era. They also had the opportunity to go down to the studios to audition. Remember, we're talking the Mad Men era.

Re: Against the Wagering Vikings [SPOILERS up to May 12, 2014]

What gets me, is that Chuck Forrest's FJ bet was irrelevant, so all discussion of how "dumb" it was is also irrelevant. Now that's a logical fallacy. Just because one takes an action that later proves irrelevant to a final result doesn't mean the initial action can't be judged by whether it was "du...

Re: Monday, May 12, 2014 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]

I have a problem with the FJ wording. Racism is now widely considered to be wrong, it is hardly debatable or controversial. In 1899 there were those who believed in "the white man's burden" and many who did not. Then there was debate and controversy. Maybe I misunderstand, but why is it now controv...

Re: Monday, May 12, 2014 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]

Surprise Surprise. Chuck Forrest made a dumb bet. I've mentioned before that Chuck and I were in the same class in college (didn't really know each but did meet a few times since he was in a suite one year with one of my best friends). Needless to say, we didn't take many classes together. I was a ...

Re: J! 30th Anniversary Tournament Matchups (SPOILERS)

I don't know how you can say that Ken has the easiest matchup. Ken Jennings vs. Chuck Forrest is a matchup that people have wanted to see for many years. Ken won 74 games and, given that Chuck played in the early years of Trebek Jeopardy before the Internet and study guides, Chuck I think could hav...

Re: Friday, May 9, 2014 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]

The only guess I could come up with for FJ was 32 years off for the book and 21 months off for a derivative work. Les Misérables. That was my guess too, though I managed to misspell it by reversing the first two vowels. (Maggie/Glenn/Robert/Corina, please put me on before the dementia worsens.) I d...

LI has both your butts whipped. That's because approximately 60% of NYC's population actually lives on LI. The two most populous boroughs, Brooklyn and Queens, both are geographically on LI but people who live there generally don't identify themselves as living on LI. It's not until one gets out in...

Re: Friday, May 9, 2014 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]

A good tight game with all three players showing quality. I had no guess on FJ, though I picked up a fair bit of LT. Now, about my home town of Montreal. We definitely refer to it as the island of Montreal all the time. With a population in the three million range, it is one of the world's largest ...
