Re: Friday, May 9, 2014 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]

A good tight game with all three players showing quality. I had no guess on FJ, though I picked up a fair bit of LT. Now, about my home town of Montreal. We definitely refer to it as the island of Montreal all the time. With a population in the three million range, it is one of the world's largest ...

Re: Wednesday, May 7, 2014 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]

Even though Brad steamrolled two excellent opponents (great effort, Dan!), he has not shown great wagering skills (not that he's had too many opportunities) and his DD wager here didn't change that. In response to his $10K DD wager, I offer two words: hubris, ate. At that point, he had nearly sown ...

Re: Wednesday, May 7, 2014 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]

Brad Rutter: $32,400-$0=$32,400...Automatic Semi-Finalist Dan Pawson: $10,200-$9,801=$399 Mark Lowenthal: $1,800-$1,500=$300 I think Dan bet too much here. I'd have bet $6,600 in his spot. That puts him in a tie with Mark at the worst and he'd be ahead of him if they finished tied for fourth in the...

Re: Tuesday, May 6, 2014 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]

How can they possible know Cape Agulhas but not Elizabeth Montgomery? It's SAMANTHA for Christ's sake! I can understand Russ and Pam not getting Samantha due to their age. I suppose it's possible that they've never seen that show. But Tom? Tsk, tsk. :) And yes, I did have a boyhood crush on Samantha.

Re: Tuesday, May 6, 2014 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]

I bow down to Tom Nosek for putting up $8,800 in the Jeopardy! round at his age- really, really impressive. I know you intended this as a compliment, but I think it's a little condescending. What makes you think someone Tom's age shouldn't do well? Nosek's performance was impressive regardless of h...

Re: Wednesday, April 2, 2014 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]

I was glad Russ won. However, I agree his DD bet wasn't very good. He is out no matter what if he is wrong. He can't catch up even if he doubles up, but as was pointed out he ran the risk of getting crushed if Larissa grabs the last $400 on the board. I disagree that the only logical DD bets are ev...

Re: Wednesday, April 2, 2014 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]

I've been pretty sure about the eventual outcome of this game ever since this happened a couple of weeks ago... Congratulations Russ. Good luck in the quarterfinals. This seems like a brand new, never thought of before corollary to Slam's Rule. Perhaps we should call it Spam's Rule. Interesting ins...

Re: Gaming the Game: 5 Unorthodox Jeopardy Strategies That Are Proven to Win

JMO, I don't think the Forrest bounce gives you a strategic edge as much as staying in the same column, but not saying the whole clue name. In jumping, you are going to say the whole category name, and it always causes me to refocus in on the subject. Last night you have "R"ANDOM HOUSE DICTIONARY D...

Re: Gaming the Game: 5 Unorthodox Jeopardy Strategies That Are Proven to Win

How is "Be a computer" a strategy? I have heard tales of these mysterious things called "jokes." If it was a joke, it wasn't a very intelligible one. I read it as a shorthand description of an ideal player and maybe a veiled critique of Arthur. But whether you read it as a joke or as a failed attem...

Re: Gaming the Game: 5 Unorthodox Jeopardy Strategies That Are Proven to Win

Some mildly interesting points which those of us around here have heard many times. But she did get wrong the number of contestants on the show each year. No way do they get up to 600. They have 46 weeks of new shows a year for a total of 230 total shows. Typically, they have 2 new contestants per s...

Re: Tuesday, March 4, 2014 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]

The huge variable in this FJ betting scenario is the expected get rate on FJ. If we assume the get rate to be 30%, then the leader Pam has at least a 70% chance of winning with a bet of zero, plus the percentage goes up by the chances that Fritz keeps third place Dan locked out... if we call those ...

Re: Tuesday, March 4, 2014 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]

69/131 for 52.67% in round 1 (4 players did not play FJ). 28/54 for 51.85% in round 2. 9/18 for 50% in round 3. 6/12 for 50% in round 4. 5/9 for 55.56% in round 5 (33.33% for Ken and Jerome, 100% for Brad) So 52.23% for the UTOC. So, FJ get rates in the UTOC were in the general ballpark of normal F...

Re: Tuesday, March 4, 2014 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]

I figured that Pam had turned her brain off for FJ after she decided to wager $0, so I'm not going to make fun of her response. I'm sure that no one thinks less of her for it. FWIW, count me in the group of folks that think that in a Master's Tournament like this there will be no gimme FJs (unlike ...

Re: Timing of Audition Invite Emails

At this point I have even forgotten what city I signed up for. Does anyone remember what northeastern/Midwestern cities were to host auditions. Chicago, yes. Not Cleveland or Pittsburgh or Columbus or Cincinnati. What else? Philadelphia, which is where I signed up for since NYC was mysteriously mis...

Re: A relatively simple statistical question

Presumably some of this advantage was due to familiarity with the signalling device Not as much as you'd think. There's a good chunk of practice before the tapings start in the morning, so as a contestant I don't think you're ever unfamiliar with it. You may start cold, because you haven't used it ...

Re: A relatively simple statistical question

There's another factor which follows from Rex's comment which I neglected to mention earlier. Simply being more comfortable out there due to experience should provide some advantage (but beware the "sophomore jinx"). That comfort applies to areas other than just the use of the signalling device. And...

Re: A relatively simple statistical question

I haven't looked at this recently, but when I studied it a few years ago, the defending champion won approximately 50% of the time. Presumably some of this advantage was due to familiarity with the signalling device and some of this advantage was due to probably being an above average contestant (as...
