I certainly understand the reaction. But that's exactly why no matter how much wagering theory and strategy is discussed, relatively few contestants on the show will do it reasonably well.

Re: J! 30th anniversary tournament

The winning amount seems great. But the other amounts seem to be a bit on the chintzy side. A 10:1 ratio of winning to 2nd place seems too extreme to me. That's how I feel about it, too. A million dollar top prize is great, but why not a bit of a boost for every round? The rest of the payouts are t...

Re: Tuesday, February 4, 2014 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]

Lying to your wife? Never a good thing. :o I always am amazed at the folks that can dissect a DD wager so succinctly. As Leszek noted, it's hard to do it under time pressure with Alex staring at you. I wonder how many contestants who have been on the show actually have been able to instantly calcul...

Re: Tuesday, February 4, 2014 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]

Gotta give the writers credit for these first two games, the clues are at a higher level and the players are showing that they belong in a rarefied tournament. The writers should always get a lot of credit.Think about the number of boards a year they put out of consistently well-written clues (sure...

Re: Monday, February 3, 2014 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]

I agree that it's very reasonable to expect that Purim >> Book of Esther. But Purim wasn't mentioned in the clue, just "Vashti" and "Ahasuerus". For my typical 5-year Jewish child, those are also Pavlovian for the Book of Esther, for gentiles out there, maybe not so much but it's certainly gettable...

Re: Tuesday, February 4, 2014 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]

No surprise Leszek went big on the late DD in a category he was confident in, but still managed to shoot himself in the foot. How did he shoot himself in the foot? You think he should have bet more? I think Leszek should have bet more. He didn't bet enough to cover twice Leslie plus the $2,000 left...

Re: Monday, February 3, 2014 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]

Although you may consider "Esther" a great get for these players, for anyone Jewish, it was practically Pavlovian. The main feature of the holiday of Purim is the reading of the Megillah which is just the Book of Esther. So, if you were to ask any 5-year old Jewish child with even the slightest rel...

Yes it is, Hans. This isn't a secret. If it is, I'll take it up w the PTB... Unlike the UToC, players get only the guarantee for the whole tourney, not keeping any monies won along the way. Those eliminated in the first appearance get $5000. Winners get nothing but the chance to go on. Those elimin...

Re: Monday, February 3, 2014 Game Recap & Discussion [SPOILERS]

Some incredible gets by the players: casus belli, Sharm el-Sheikh, Esther (given Vashti & Ahasuerus). I negged on Chuck's DD with "Exodus", thinking the "great wind" was parting the Red Sea, but in hindsight I don't think there were any tempests involved in that. Although you may consider "Esther" ...

Oh, I don't think Doug is saying they aren't DESIGNED to be that way, slam; just that specialized knowledge make questions of ease arbitrary. The only question I have with Arthur's strategy is that employing it from the beginning means it is much more likely that the first Daily Double will be reve...

Doug, First, I definitely agree with you about Arthur's strategy. He's doing his best to win the game by implementing a strategy that only a few others have used in the past. But I have to disagree with you about the difficulty about the clues. I certainly believe that they get move difficult as you...

Re: Other than making the cut for audition, does Online Score matter?

I'm bumping this to keep it up near the top so I can get an answer. I have wondered whether people who have been to an audition following an online quiz, but don't get selected to be on the show, are somehow put on a list of "people we won't invite to further auditions" because they've already been...

Re: Online Test Recap & Discussion (Pacific), January 9, 2014

I've edited a few dozen books about the Bible, and I didn't get the Thomas quote. The quote expresses confusion, not doubt. Peter could just as easily have said this. Yeah, as far as Bible category questions go, this one was pretty bad, IMO. (though not as bad as that FJ one from a year or two ago ...

Re: Online Test Recap & Discussion (Central), January 8, 2014

Ease or difficulty of a particular test is so often particular to each person. Last night I got 42 when taking it for real. Tonight I got 49 (confused Triton for Titan, so said Saturn instead of Neptune) without breathing hard. Some of that difference is certainly due to taking it for real or not, b...

Re: Online Test Recap & Discussion (Eastern), January 7, 2014

And once more into the breach with a comfortable (though disappointing) passing score of 42. I haven't had an in-person audition since 2009 so maybe now I'll get one. Wasn't eligible for the test in 2010, passed in 2011 and 2012 without an audition and had a technical glitch in 2013. So, it's about ...

Re: Registration now open for adult online test

Once more into the breach! I've lost track of how many times I've tried to get on to the show. But if I recall correctly, 2014 will the merely the 29th anniversary of my first effort to do so. :( Admittedly, I have not auditioned nearly every year since then. I did note the lack of a convenient NYC ...
